    Focused Attention vs. Open Monitoring: An Event-Related Potential Study of Emotion Regulation by Two Distinct Forms of Mindfulness Meditation

    This study investigated the effects of two novel forms of 8-week mindfulness meditation training, focused attention (FA) and open monitoring (OM), relative to an established training, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), on early emotional reactivity to negative emotional images as assessed by electroencephalography (EEG). Data on the late-positive potential (LPP) were analyzed to address whether the three mindfulness interventions attenuated the LPP from pre- to post-intervention, and if significant differences existed between groups in LPP at post-intervention. Rather than an attenuation, results indicated an average increase in LPP amplitude from pre- to post-intervention. No significant differences were found in the LPP between the training conditions at post-intervention. These results provide preliminary evidence that mindfulness training in novice practitioners may heighten initial emotional reactivity. Further, well-designed research is needed to examine a wider range of neural responses to better understand emotion regulation process effects of different forms of mindfulness training

    Influence of study design on digital pathology image quality evaluation : the need to define a clinical task

    Despite the current rapid advance in technologies for whole slide imaging, there is still no scientific consensus on the recommended methodology for image quality assessment of digital pathology slides. For medical images in general, it has been recommended to assess image quality in terms of doctors’ success rates in performing a specific clinical task while using the images (clinical image quality, cIQ). However, digital pathology is a new modality, and already identifying the appropriate task is difficult. In an alternative common approach, humans are asked to do a simpler task such as rating overall image quality (perceived image quality, pIQ), but that involves the risk of nonclinically relevant findings due to an unknown relationship between the pIQ and cIQ. In this study, we explored three different experimental protocols: (1) conducting a clinical task (detecting inclusion bodies), (2) rating image similarity and preference, and (3) rating the overall image quality. Additionally, within protocol 1, overall quality ratings were also collected (task-aware pIQ). The experiments were done by diagnostic veterinary pathologists in the context of evaluating the quality of hematoxylin and eosin-stained digital pathology slides of animal tissue samples under several common image alterations: additive noise, blurring, change in gamma, change in color saturation, and JPG compression. While the size of our experiments was small and prevents drawing strong conclusions, the results suggest the need to define a clinical task. Importantly, the pIQ data collected under protocols 2 and 3 did not always rank the image alterations the same as their cIQ from protocol 1, warning against using conventional pIQ to predict cIQ. At the same time, there was a correlation between the cIQ and task-aware pIQ ratings from protocol 1, suggesting that the clinical experiment context (set by specifying the clinical task) may affect human visual attention and bring focus to their criteria of image quality. Further research is needed to assess whether and for which purposes (e.g., preclinical testing) task-aware pIQ ratings could substitute cIQ for a given clinical task

    Change blindness: eradication of gestalt strategies

    Arrays of eight, texture-defined rectangles were used as stimuli in a one-shot change blindness (CB) task where there was a 50% chance that one rectangle would change orientation between two successive presentations separated by an interval. CB was eliminated by cueing the target rectangle in the first stimulus, reduced by cueing in the interval and unaffected by cueing in the second presentation. This supports the idea that a representation was formed that persisted through the interval before being 'overwritten' by the second presentation (Landman et al, 2003 Vision Research 43149–164]. Another possibility is that participants used some kind of grouping or Gestalt strategy. To test this we changed the spatial position of the rectangles in the second presentation by shifting them along imaginary spokes (by ±1 degree) emanating from the central fixation point. There was no significant difference seen in performance between this and the standard task [F(1,4)=2.565, p=0.185]. This may suggest two things: (i) Gestalt grouping is not used as a strategy in these tasks, and (ii) it gives further weight to the argument that objects may be stored and retrieved from a pre-attentional store during this task

    Study of saliency in objective video quality assessment

    Reliably predicting video quality as perceived by humans remains challenging and is of high practical relevance. A significant research trend is to investigate visual saliency and its implications for video quality assessment. Fundamental problems regarding how to acquire reliable eye-tracking data for the purpose of video quality research and how saliency should be incorporated in objective video quality metrics (VQMs) are largely unsolved. In this paper, we propose a refined methodology for reliably collecting eye-tracking data, which essentially eliminates bias induced by each subject having to view multiple variations of the same scene in a conventional experiment. We performed a large-scale eye-tracking experiment that involved 160 human observers and 160 video stimuli distorted with different distortion types at various degradation levels. The measured saliency was integrated into several best known VQMs in the literature. With the assurance of the reliability of the saliency data, we thoroughly assessed the capabilities of saliency in improving the performance of VQMs, and devised a novel approach for optimal use of saliency in VQMs. We also evaluated to what extent the state-of-the-art computational saliency models can improve VQMs in comparison to the improvement achieved by using “ground truth” eye-tracking data.     Modelling the interpretation of digital mammography using high order statistics and deep machine learning

    Visual search is an inhomogeneous, yet efficient sampling process accomplished by the saccades and the central (foveal) vision. Areas that attract the central vision have been studied for errors in interpretation of medical images. In this study, we extend existing visual search studies to understand features of areas that receive direct visual attention and elicit a mark by the radiologist (True and False Positive decisions) from those that elicit a mark but were captured by the peripheral vision. We also investigate if there are any differences between these areas and those that are never fixated by radiologists. Extending these investigations, we further explore the possibility of modelling radiologists’ search behavior and their interpretation of mammograms using deep machine learning techniques. We demonstrated that energy profiles of foveated (FC), peripherally fixated (PC), and never fixated (NFC) areas are distinct. It was shown that FCs are selected on the basis of being most informative. Never fixated regions were found to be least informative. Evidences that energy profiles and dwell time of these areas influence radiologists’ decisions (and confidence in such decisions) were also shown. High-order features provided additional information to the radiologists, however their effect on decision (and confidence in such decision) was not significant. We also showed that deep-convolution neural network can successfully be used to model radiologists’ attentional level, decisions and confidence in their decisions. High accuracy and high agreement (between true and predicted values) in such predictions can be achieved in modelling attentional level (accuracy: 0.90, kappa: 0.82) and decisions (accuracy: 0.92, kappa: 0.86) of radiologists. Our results indicated that an ensembled model for radiologist’s search behavior and decision can successfully be built. Convolution networks failed to model missed cancers however
