Predicting the Effects of News Sentiments on the Stock Market
Stock market forecasting is very important in the planning of business
activities. Stock price prediction has attracted many researchers in multiple
disciplines including computer science, statistics, economics, finance, and
operations research. Recent studies have shown that the vast amount of online
information in the public domain such as Wikipedia usage pattern, news stories
from the mainstream media, and social media discussions can have an observable
effect on investors opinions towards financial markets. The reliability of the
computational models on stock market prediction is important as it is very
sensitive to the economy and can directly lead to financial loss. In this
paper, we retrieved, extracted, and analyzed the effects of news sentiments on
the stock market. Our main contributions include the development of a sentiment
analysis dictionary for the financial sector, the development of a
dictionary-based sentiment analysis model, and the evaluation of the model for
gauging the effects of news sentiments on stocks for the pharmaceutical market.
Using only news sentiments, we achieved a directional accuracy of 70.59% in
predicting the trends in short-term stock price movement.Comment: 4 page
Effectiveness of Corporate Social Media Activities to Increase Relational Outcomes
This study applies social media analytics to investigate the impact of different corporate social media activities on user word of mouth and attitudinal loyalty. We conduct a multilevel analysis of approximately 5 million tweets regarding the main Twitter accounts of 28 large global companies. We empirically identify different social media activities in terms of social media management strategies (using social media management tools or the web-frontend client), account types (broadcasting or receiving information), and communicative approaches (conversational or disseminative). What attracts vehicle consumers’ buying:A Saaty scale-based VIKOR (SSC-VIKOR) approach from after-sales textual perspective?
Purpose:
The increasingly booming e-commerce development has stimulated vehicle consumers to express individual reviews through online forum. The purpose of this paper is to probe into the vehicle consumer consumption behavior and make recommendations for potential consumers from textual comments viewpoint.
Design/methodology/approach:
A big data analytic-based approach is designed to discover vehicle consumer consumption behavior from online perspective. To reduce subjectivity of expert-based approaches, a parallel NaĂŻve Bayes approach is designed to analyze the sentiment analysis, and the Saaty scale-based (SSC) scoring rule is employed to obtain specific sentimental value of attribute class, contributing to the multi-grade sentiment classification. To achieve the intelligent recommendation for potential vehicle customers, a novel SSC-VIKOR approach is developed to prioritize vehicle brand candidates from a big data analytical viewpoint.
Findings:
The big data analytics argue that “cost-effectiveness” characteristic is the most important factor that vehicle consumers care, and the data mining results enable automakers to better understand consumer consumption behavior.
Research limitations/implications:
The case study illustrates the effectiveness of the integrated method, contributing to much more precise operations management on marketing strategy, quality improvement and intelligent recommendation.
Originality/value:
Researches of consumer consumption behavior are usually based on survey-based methods, and mostly previous studies about comments analysis focus on binary analysis. The hybrid SSC-VIKOR approach is developed to fill the gap from the big data perspective
Language (Technology) is Power: A Critical Survey of "Bias" in NLP
We survey 146 papers analyzing "bias" in NLP systems, finding that their
motivations are often vague, inconsistent, and lacking in normative reasoning,
despite the fact that analyzing "bias" is an inherently normative process. We
further find that these papers' proposed quantitative techniques for measuring
or mitigating "bias" are poorly matched to their motivations and do not engage
with the relevant literature outside of NLP. Based on these findings, we
describe the beginnings of a path forward by proposing three recommendations
that should guide work analyzing "bias" in NLP systems. These recommendations
rest on a greater recognition of the relationships between language and social
hierarchies, encouraging researchers and practitioners to articulate their
conceptualizations of "bias"---i.e., what kinds of system behaviors are
harmful, in what ways, to whom, and why, as well as the normative reasoning
underlying these statements---and to center work around the lived experiences
of members of communities affected by NLP systems, while interrogating and
reimagining the power relations between technologists and such communities
Big data analytics:Computational intelligence techniques and application areas
Big Data has significant impact in developing functional smart cities and supporting modern societies. In this paper, we investigate the importance of Big Data in modern life and economy, and discuss challenges arising from Big Data utilization. Different computational intelligence techniques have been considered as tools for Big Data analytics. We also explore the powerful combination of Big Data and Computational Intelligence (CI) and identify a number of areas, where novel applications in real world smart city problems can be developed by utilizing these powerful tools and techniques. We present a case study for intelligent transportation in the context of a smart city, and a novel data modelling methodology based on a biologically inspired universal generative modelling approach called Hierarchical Spatial-Temporal State Machine (HSTSM). We further discuss various implications of policy, protection, valuation and commercialization related to Big Data, its applications and deployment
Ethical Challenges in Data-Driven Dialogue Systems
The use of dialogue systems as a medium for human-machine interaction is an
increasingly prevalent paradigm. A growing number of dialogue systems use
conversation strategies that are learned from large datasets. There are well
documented instances where interactions with these system have resulted in
biased or even offensive conversations due to the data-driven training process.
Here, we highlight potential ethical issues that arise in dialogue systems
research, including: implicit biases in data-driven systems, the rise of
adversarial examples, potential sources of privacy violations, safety concerns,
special considerations for reinforcement learning systems, and reproducibility
concerns. We also suggest areas stemming from these issues that deserve further
investigation. Through this initial survey, we hope to spur research leading to
