    Seepage criteria based optimal design of water retaining structures with reliability quantification utilizing surrogate model linked simulation-optimization approach

    The safety of hydraulic water retaining structures (HWRS) is an important issue as many instances of HWRS failure have been reported. Failure of HWRS may lead to catastrophic events, especially those associated with seepage failures. Therefore, seepage safety factors recommended for HWRS design are generally very conservative. These safety factors have been developed based on approximation calculations, unreliable assumptions, and ideal experimental conditions, which are rarely replicated in real field situations. However, with the development of the numerical methods, and high speed processors, more accurate seepage analysis has become possible, even for complex flow domains, different scenarios of boundary conditions, and varied hydraulic conductivity. On the other hand, because construction of HWRS requires a significant amount of construction material and engineering effort, the construction cost efficiency of HWRS is an issue that must be considered in design of HWRS. This study aims to determine the minimum cost design of HWRS constructed on permeable soils, incorporating numerical solutions of a seepage system related to HWRS, utilizing linked a simulation–optimization (S-O) model. Due to the complexity and inefficacy of directly linking a simulation model to the optimization model, the numerical simulation model was replaced by trained surrogate models. These surrogate models can be trained based on numerically simulated data sets. Therefore, trained surrogate models expeditiously and accurately provide predicted responses relating to seepage characteristics pertaining to HWRS. The optimization model based on the linked S-O technique incorporated different safety factors and hydraulic structure design requirements as constraints. The majority of these constraints and objective function(s) were affected by the responses of predicted seepage characteristics based on the developed surrogate models. To improve the safety of HWRS design, the effect of non-homogenous and anisotropic hydraulic conductivity were incorporated in the S-O model. Obtained solution results demonstrated that considering stratification of the flow domain due to different hydraulic conductivity values or anisotropic ratios can significantly change the optimum design of HWRS. Low hydraulic conductivity and anisotropic ratios resulted in more critical seepage characteristics. Consequently, the minimum construction cost increased due to an increase of dimensions of involved seepage protection design variables. Furthermore, uncertainty in estimating hydraulic conductivity is incorporated in the S-O model. The reliability based optimal design (RBOD) framework based on the multi-realization optimization technique was implemented using the S-O model. The uncertainty in seepage quantities due to uncertainty of hydraulic conductivity was represented using many stochastic ensemble surrogate models. Each ensemble model included many surrogate models trained in utilizing input– output data sets simulated with different scenarios of hydraulic conductivity drawn from diverse random fields based on different log-normal distributions. Obtained results of this approach demonstrated substantial consequences of considering uncertainty in hydraulic conductivity. Also, the deterministic safety factors, especially for those pertaining to the exit gradient, were insufficient to provide prescribed safety in the long term. Although surrogate models are utilized in S-O approaches, each run of the S-O model takes a long time as developed S-O models are applied to complex and large scale problems. Hence, efficiency of the S-O model was a key factor to successfully implement the methodology. Three main techniques were utilized to increase the efficiency of the S-O technique: using parallel computing, utilizing nested function technique, and using a vectorised formulation system. These strategies substantially boosted efficiency of implementing the S-O model. The S-O models were implemented for many hypothetical scenarios for different purposes. In general, results demonstrated that optimum design of the seepage protection system relating to HWRS design must include two end cut-offs with an apron between them. The dimensions of these components were augmented with an increase of upstream water head, and reduction of anisotropic ratios or hydraulic conductivity value. The main role of the downstream cut-off was to decrease the actual exit gradient value. This impact is more pronounced if the inclination angle of the cut-off is toward the downstream side (>90 degrees). The role of the upstream cut-off was to decrease uplift pressure values on the HWRS base. Consequently, this partially contributed to decreasing the exit gradient value. The effect of the upstream cut-off in reducing the uplift pressure was more when the inclination angle was toward the upstream side (<90 degrees). Moreover, the apron (floor) width helped to increase the stability of HWRS. This variable provided the required weight to improve HWRS resistance to external hydraulic forces and to uplift pressure. Incorporating the weight of water (hydrostatic pressure) at the upstream side in counterbalancing momentum and hydraulic forces showed improvement in the safety of the HWRS. Also, all conditions and safety factors pertaining to HWRS design were satisfied. The exit gradient safety factor was the most important critical factor affecting optimum design as obtained optimum solutions satisfied the minimum permissible values of the exit gradient safety factor, i.e., at the minimum permissible value. Also, the eccentric load condition played a crucial role in resulting optimum solutions. Finally, applying the S-O model to obtain reliable and safe design of HWRS at minimum cost was successfully implemented for performance evaluation purposes. This technique may be extended to incorporate more complex scenarios in HWRS design where the impact of dynamic and seismic load could be incorporated. The effect of unsteady state seepage system could be another interesting direction for future studies. Further, incorporating more sources of the uncertainty associated with design parameters could achieve a more accurate estimation of actual safety for the HWRS design

    Reducing the Roughness and Sound Intensity by Optimization of Cutting Parameters in Processing of AISI 2714 Steel Material on CNC Milling Machine

    Within the scope of this study, optimization of cutting parameters (feed rate, cutting speed and depth of cut) was aimed in order to reduce the noise level that occurs during the processing of AISI 2714 steel on CNC milling machine without compromising the surface roughness. Experimental design was examined in three variables, three levels and two target functions. In order to investigate the contribution of these parameters to the target function, the experiments were carried out in accordance with the experiment plan determined by using the "Central Composite Design (CCD)" of the "Response Surface Method (RSM)". Mathematical models have been developed in order to predict sound intensity and surface roughness by applying regression analysis to the experimental results. As a result, it has been observed that the most effective parameter in reducing the surface roughness is the feed rate, followed by the depth of cut. While the depth of cut was the most effective parameter in reducing the sound intensity, it was determined that the next effective parameter was the feed rate

    SVM-RFE Based Feature Selection and Taguchi Parameters Optimization for Multiclass SVM Classifier

    Recently, support vector machine (SVM) has excellent performance on classification and prediction and is widely used on disease diagnosis or medical assistance. However, SVM only functions well on two-group classification problems. This study combines feature selection and SVM recursive feature elimination (SVM-RFE) to investigate the classification accuracy of multiclass problems for Dermatology and Zoo databases. Dermatology dataset contains 33 feature variables, 1 class variable, and 366 testing instances; and the Zoo dataset contains 16 feature variables, 1 class variable, and 101 testing instances. The feature variables in the two datasets were sorted in descending order by explanatory power, and different feature sets were selected by SVM-RFE to explore classification accuracy. Meanwhile, Taguchi method was jointly combined with SVM classifier in order to optimize parameters C and γ to increase classification accuracy for multiclass classification. The experimental results show that the classification accuracy can be more than 95% after SVM-RFE feature selection and Taguchi parameter optimization for Dermatology and Zoo databases

    Statistical investigation on effect of Electroless coating Parameter on Coating Morphology of Short Basalt Fiber.

    The Objective of the present paper is to investigate the effect of electroless coating parameters, such as Sensitization time (A), Activation time (B) and Metallization time (C), on the coating morphology of the basalt short fiber and the optimization of the coating process parameters based on L27 Taguchi orthogonal design. Coated and non-coated basalt short fiber, typically used with 7075 Aluminium alloy as einforcement, is studied. The effect of coating the short basalt fiber with copper has proved beneficial to interfacial bonding (wettability) between the reinforcement and the matrix. The interface between the matrix and the reinforcement plays a crucial role in determining the properties of metal matrix composites (MMCs). An L27 array was used to accommodate the three levels of factors as well as their interaction effects. From the Taguchi methodology, the optimal combinations for coating parameters were found to be A1B3C3 (i.e., 5 min. sensitization time, 15 min. activation time and 3 min. for metallization time). In addition, the interaction between pH value and the coating time and that between the coating time and the temperature, influence the coating parameters significantly. Furthermore, a statistical analysis of variance reveals that the metallization time has the highest influence followed by the activation time and the sensitization time.     Congestion Prediction in Internet of Things Network using Temporal Convolutional Network A Centralized Approach

    The unprecedented ballooning of network traffic flow, specifically, Internet of Things (IoT) network traffic, has big stressed of congestion on todays Internet. Non-recurring network traffic flow may be caused by temporary disruptions, such as packet drop, poor quality of services, delay, etc. Hence, the network traffic flow estimation is important in IoT networks to predict congestion. As the data in IoT networks is collected from a large number of diversified devices which have unlike format of data and also manifest complex correlations, so the generated data is heterogeneous and nonlinear&nbsp;in nature. Conventional machine learning approaches unable to deal with nonlinear datasets and suffer from misclassification of real network traffic due to overfitting. Therefore, it also becomes really hard for conventional machine learning tools like shallow neural networks to predict the congestion accurately. Accuracy of congestion prediction algorithms play an important role to control the congestion by regulating the send rate of the source. Various deeplearning methods (LSTM, CNN, GRU, etc.) are considered in designing network traffic flow predictors, which have shown promising results. In this work, we propose a novel congestion predictor for IoT, that uses Temporal Convolutional Network (TCN). Furthermore, we use Taguchi method to optimize the TCN model that reduces the number of runs of the experiments. We compare TCN with other four deep learning-based models concerning Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and Mean Relative Error (MRE). The experimental results show that TCN based deep learning framework achieves improved&nbsp;performance with 95.52% accuracy in predicting network congestion. Further, we design the Home IoT network testbed to capture&nbsp;the real network traffic flows as no standard dataset is available

    Anomaly detection in a cutting tool by K-means clustering and Support Vector Machines

    This paper concerns the analysis of experimental data, verifying the applicability of signal analysis techniques for condition monitoring of a packaging machine. In particular, the activity focuses on the cutting process that divides a continuous flow of packaging paper into single packages. The cutting process is made by a steel knife driven by a hydraulic system. Actually, the knives are frequently substituted, causing frequent stops of the machine and consequent lost production costs. The aim of this paper is to develop a diagnostic procedure to assess the wearing condition of blades, reducing the stops for maintenance. The packaging machine was provided with pressure sensor that monitors the hydraulic system driving the blade. Processing the pressure data comprises three main steps: the selection of scalar quantities that could be indicative of the condition of the knife. A clustering analysis was used to set up a threshold between unfaulted and faulted knives. Finally, a Support Vector Machine (SVM) model was applied to classify the technical condition of knife during its lifetime

    Work Zone Safety Analysis, Investigating Benefits from Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) on Roadway Safety

    The attributes of work zones have significant impacts on the risk of crash occurrence. Therefore, identifying the factors associated with crash severity and frequency in work zone locations is of important value to roadway safety. In addition, the significant loss of workers’ lives and injuries resulting from work zone crashes indicates the emergent need for a comprehensive and in-depth investigation of work zone crash mechanisms. The cost of work zone crashes is another issue that should be taken into account as work zone crashes impose millions of dollars on society each year. Applying innovative construction methods like Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) dramatically decreases on-site construction duration and thus improves roadway safety. This safe and cost-effective procedure for building new bridges or replacing/rehabilitating existing bridges in just a few weeks instead of months or years may prevent crashes and avoid injuries as a result of work zone presence. The application of machine learning techniques in traffic safety studies has seen explosive growth in recent years. Compared to statistical methods, MLs are more accurate prediction models due to their ability to deal with more complex functions. To this end, this study focuses on three major areas: crash severity at construction work zones with worker presence, crash frequency at bridge locations, and assessment of the associated costs to calculate the contribution of safety to the benefit-cost ratio of ABC as compared to conventional methods. Some key findings of this study can be highlighted as in-depth investigation of contributing factors in conjunction with the results from statistical and machine learning models, which can provide a more comprehensive interpretation of crash severity/frequency outcomes. The demonstration of work zone crashes needs to be modeled separately by time of day for severity analysis with a high level of confidence. Investigation of the contributing factors revealed the nonlinear relationship between crash severity/frequency and contributing factors. Finally, the results showed that the safety benefits from a case study in Florida consisted of 43% of the total ABC implementation cost. This indicates that the safety benefits of ABC implementation consist of a considerable portion of its benefit-cost ratio
