    The Committee on Environment and Natural Resources (CENR) Task Force on Observations and Data Management hosted a Global Change Calibration/Validation Workshop on May 10-12, 1995, in Arlington, Virginia. This Workshop was convened by Robert Schiffer of NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C., for the CENR Secretariat with a view toward assessing and documenting lessons learned in the calibration and validation of large-scale, long-term data sets in land, ocean, and atmospheric research programs. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)/Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) hosted the meeting on behalf of the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS)/Working Group on Calibration/walidation, the Global Change Observing System (GCOS), and the U. S. CENR. A meeting of experts from the international scientific community was brought together to develop recommendations for calibration and validation of global change data sets taken from instrument series and across generations of instruments and technologies.     Visualization Techniques in Space and Atmospheric Sciences

    Unprecedented volumes of data will be generated by research programs that investigate the Earth as a system and the origin of the universe, which will in turn require analysis and interpretation that will lead to meaningful scientific insight. Providing a widely distributed research community with the ability to access, manipulate, analyze, and visualize these complex, multidimensional data sets depends on a wide range of computer science and technology topics. Data storage and compression, data base management, computational methods and algorithms, artificial intelligence, telecommunications, and high-resolution display are just a few of the topics addressed. A unifying theme throughout the papers with regards to advanced data handling and visualization is the need for interactivity, speed, user-friendliness, and extensibility

    Measurement of HO2 and other trace gases in the stratosphere using a high resolution far-infrared spectrometer

    This report covers the time period 1 Jul. to 31 Dec. 1993. There were no balloon or airplane flights during this reporting period, instead we concentrated on analyzing our existing data. This was facilitated by a recently completed program of enhancements made in our data reduction software. We are using our data sets to examine the changes in stratospheric chemistry over a variety of time scales. Ongoing projects include investigating the diurnal variation of OH, HO2, and H2O2 and exploring their relationships with other simultaneously measured species; measuring long term trends in HF and HCl; and looking for changes caused by the June 1991 Pinatubo eruption. We are also continuing to analyze the large set of data collected during the AASE 2

    The interaction between the solar wind and the earth's magnetic field creates a large magnetic cavity which is termed the magnetosphere. Energy derived from the solar wind is ultimately dissipated by particle acceleration-precipitation and Joule heating in the magnetosphere-ionosphere. The rate of energy dissipation is highly variable, with peak levels during geomagnetic storms and substorms. The degree to which solar wind and magnetospheric conditions control the energy dissipation processes remains one of the major outstanding questions in magnetospheric physics.
