    Effective scheduling algorithm for on-demand XML data broadcasts in wireless environments

    The organization of data on wireless channels, which aims to reduce the access time of mobile clients, is a key problem in data broadcasts. Many scheduling algorithms have been designed to organize flat data on air. However, how to effectively schedule semi-structured information such as XML data on wireless channels is still a challenge. In this paper, we firstly propose a novel method to greatly reduce the tuning time by splitting query results into XML snippets and to achieve better access efficiency by combining similar ones. Then we analyze the data broadcast scheduling problem of on-demand XML data broadcasts and define the efficiency of a data item. Based on the definition, a Least Efficient Last (LEL) scheduling algorithm is also devised to effectively organize XML data on wireless channels. Finally, we study the performance of our algorithms through extensive experiments. The results show that our scheduling algorithms can reduce both access time and tuning time signifcantly when compared with existing work

    Organizing XML data in a wireless broadcast system by exploiting structural similarities

    Wireless data broadcast is an efficient way of delivering data of common interest to a large population of mobile devices within a proximate area, such as smart cities, battle fields, etc. In this work, we focus ourselves on studying the data placement problem of periodic XML data broadcast in mobile and wireless environments. This is an important issue, particularly when XML becomes prevalent in today’s ubiquitous and mobile computing devices and applications. Taking advantage of the structured characteristics of XML data, effective broadcast programs can be generated based on the XML data on the server only. An XML data broadcast system is developed and a theoretical analysis on the XML data placement on a wireless channel is also presented, which forms the basis of the novel data placement algorithm in this work. The proposed algorithm is validated through a set of experiments. The results show that the proposed algorithm can effectively place XML data on air and significantly improve the overall access efficiency

    Service-oriented wireless sensor networks and an energy-aware mesh routing algorithm

    Service-oriented wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are being paid more and more attention because service computing can hide complexity of WSNs and enables simple and transparent access to individual sensor nodes. Existing WSNs mainly use IEEE 802.15.4 as their communication specification, however, this protocol suite cannot support IP-based routing and service-oriented access because it only specifies a set of physical- and MAC-layer protocols. For inosculating WSNs with IP networks, IEEE proposed a 6LoWPAN (IPv6 over LoW Power wireless Area Networks) as the adaptation layer between IP and MAC layers. However, it is still a challenging task how to discover and manage sensor resources, guarantee the security of WSNs and route messages over resource-restricted sensor nodes. This paper is set to address such three key issues. Firstly, we propose a service-oriented WSN architectural model based on 6LoWPAN and design a lightweight service middleware SOWAM (service-oriented WSN architecture middleware), where each sensor node provides a collection of services and is managed by our SOWAM. Secondly, we develop a security mechanism for the authentication and secure connection among users and sensor nodes. Finally, we propose an energyaware mesh routing protocol (EAMR) for message transmission in a WSN with multiple mobile sinks, aiming at prolonging the lifetime of WSNs as long as possible. In our EAMR, sensor nodes with the residual energy lower than a threshold do not forward messages for other nodes until the threshold is leveled down. As a result, the energy consumption is evened over sensor nodes significantly. The experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of our service-oriented approach and lightweight middleware SOWAM, as well as the effectiveness of our routing algorithm EAMR.<br /

    System Design of Internet-of-Things for Residential Smart Grid

    Internet-of-Things (IoTs) envisions to integrate, coordinate, communicate, and collaborate real-world objects in order to perform daily tasks in a more intelligent and efficient manner. To comprehend this vision, this paper studies the design of a large scale IoT system for smart grid application, which constitutes a large number of home users and has the requirement of fast response time. In particular, we focus on the messaging protocol of a universal IoT home gateway, where our cloud enabled system consists of a backend server, unified home gateway (UHG) at the end users, and user interface for mobile devices. We discuss the features of such IoT system to support a large scale deployment with a UHG and real-time residential smart grid applications. Based on the requirements, we design an IoT system using the XMPP protocol, and implemented in a testbed for energy management applications.     Air Indexing for On-Demand XML Data Broadcast

    XML data broadcast is an efficient way to disseminate semistructured information in wireless mobile environments. In this paper, we propose a novel two-tier index structure to facilitate the access of XML document in an on-demand broadcast system. It provides the clients with an overall image of all the XML documents available at the server side and hence enables the clients to locate complete result sets accordingly. A pruning strategy is developed to cut down the index size and a two-tier structure is proposed to further remove any redundant information. In addition, two index distribution strategies, namely naive distribution and partial distribution, have been designed to interleave the index information with the XML documents in the wireless channels. Theoretical analysis and simulation experiments are also put forward to show the benefits of our indexing methods

    Intrusion Tolerant Routing Protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks

    This MSc thesis is focused in the study, solution proposal and experimental evaluation of security solutions for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). The objectives are centered on intrusion tolerant routing services, adapted for the characteristics and requirements of WSN nodes and operation behavior. The main contribution addresses the establishment of pro-active intrusion tolerance properties at the network level, as security mechanisms for the proposal of a reliable and secure routing protocol. Those properties and mechanisms will augment a secure communication base layer supported by light-weigh cryptography methods, to improve the global network resilience capabilities against possible intrusion-attacks on the WSN nodes. Adapting to WSN characteristics, the design of the intended security services also pushes complexity away from resource-poor sensor nodes towards resource-rich and trustable base stations. The devised solution will construct, securely and efficiently, a secure tree-structured routing service for data-dissemination in large scale deployed WSNs. The purpose is to tolerate the damage caused by adversaries modeled according with the Dolev-Yao threat model and ISO X.800 attack typology and framework, or intruders that can compromise maliciously the deployed sensor nodes, injecting, modifying, or blocking packets, jeopardizing the correct behavior of internal network routing processing and topology management. The proposed enhanced mechanisms, as well as the design and implementation of a new intrusiontolerant routing protocol for a large scale WSN are evaluated by simulation. For this purpose, the evaluation is based on a rich simulation environment, modeling networks from hundreds to tens of thousands of wireless sensors, analyzing different dimensions: connectivity conditions, degree-distribution patterns, latency and average short-paths, clustering, reliability metrics and energy cost

    An efficient cluster-based service model for vehicular ad-hoc networks on motorways

    Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks (VANET) can, but not limited to provide users with useful traffic and environmental information services to improve travelling efficiency and road safety. The communications systems used in VANET include vehicle-to-vehicle communications (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure communications (V2I). The transmission delay and the energy consumption cost for maintaining good-quality communications vary depending on the transmission distance and transmission power, especially on motorways where vehicles are moving at higher speeds. In addition, in modern transportation systems, electric vehicles are becoming more and more popular, which require a more efficient battery management, this also call for an efficient way of vehicular transmission. In this project, a cluster-based two-way data service model to provide real-time data services for vehicles on motorways is designed. The design promotes efficient cooperation between V2V and V2I, or namely V2X, with the objective of improving both service and energy performance for vehicular networks with traffic in the same direction. Clustering is an effective way of applying V2X in VANET systems, where the cluster head will take the main responsibility of exchanging data with Road Side Units (RSU) and other cluster members. The model includes local service data collection, data aggregation, and service data downloading. We use SUMO and OMNET++ to simulate the traffic scenarios and the network communications. Two different models (V2X and V2I) are compared to evaluate the performance of the proposed model under different flow speeds. From the results, we conclude that the cluster-based service model outperforms the non-clustered model in terms of service successful ratio, network throughput and energy consumption
