Mobile heritage practices. Implications for scholarly research, user experience design, and evaluation methods using mobile apps.
Mobile heritage apps have become one of the most popular means for audience
engagement and curation of museum collections and heritage contexts. This
raises practical and ethical questions for both researchers and practitioners, such
as: what kind of audience engagement can be built using mobile apps? what are
the current approaches? how can audience engagement with these experience
be evaluated? how can those experiences be made more resilient, and in turn
sustainable? In this thesis I explore experience design scholarships together with
personal professional insights to analyse digital heritage practices with a view to
accelerating thinking about and critique of mobile apps in particular. As a result,
the chapters that follow here look at the evolution of digital heritage practices,
examining the cultural, societal, and technological contexts in which mobile
heritage apps are developed by the creative media industry, the academic
institutions, and how these forces are shaping the user experience design
methods. Drawing from studies in digital (critical) heritage, Human-Computer
Interaction (HCI), and design thinking, this thesis provides a critical analysis of
the development and use of mobile practices for the heritage. Furthermore,
through an empirical and embedded approach to research, the thesis also
presents auto-ethnographic case studies in order to show evidence that mobile
experiences conceptualised by more organic design approaches, can result in
more resilient and sustainable heritage practices. By doing so, this thesis
encourages a renewed understanding of the pivotal role of these practices in the
broader sociocultural, political and environmental changes.AHRC REAC
The Mediating Effects of Psychological Contract on Human Resource Practices and Employee Retention Relationship: An Employer-Employee Perspective.
The importance of retaining employees is emphasized by the negative outcomes of employee turnover such as the costs in finding a replacement, as well as the valuable knowledge, skills and connections that employee has. The psychological contract plays a crucial role as a framework in understanding the fundamentals of the employee-employer relationship, as it deals with the fulfilment of obligations and promises an organization has made to the employee, and vice versa. With the use of the psychological contract in employee retention, the gaps between what is promised and the extent of how the promises are met can be determined. Based on these gaps, employers can strategize employee retention practices accordingly.
In this thesis, practices of the organization (HR practices) are used as contents of the psychological contract of which its importance to the employees and the extent of its fulfilment (psychological contract) is identified, which would result in employee retention. A crosssectional study using survey questionnaires were distributed to organizations within the Event Management industry. These organizations are those registered under the Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) where 50 employee-employer dyads returned the completed questionnaires. The data obtained were then analysed using descriptive, correlational, independent samples t-tests, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between the variables of this study.
This research found that there is a positive significant relationship between HR practice and psychological contract fulfilment (Employee: β = 0.355, p-value 0.05). However, there was a significant difference between employee and employer regarding the psychological contract (p = 0.00) and employee retention (p = 0.013). These findings contribute to the HRM domain and offers a valuable connection between HR practices and the psychological contract, and also the link between psychological contract and social exchange theory. Additionally, matched data of employee and employer provides valuable and corresponding information regarding the perceptions of the psychological contract
Experience, evidence and what counts in UK music therapy – an arts-based autoethnographic study
The field of music therapy is not bland: therapists train because of deep belief in the dignity of people and the power of music; participants begin therapy because something significantly challenging is present in their lives; fundraisers share stories which are painful, life affirming, uncomfortable; receptionists juggle quiet spaces with loud spaces with stimulation without sensory triggers; carers listen, absorb, give and give some more, often beyond the limits of their energy. And pulse and meter and melody and dynamics and bodies and voices and wood and skin and metal are the raw materials.However, it might be argued that the search for evidence in music therapy has led to something akin to a parallel reality, - one in which measured, analytical reporting of certain aspects of the work is shared, often in official documents. The vital, sensory, embodied, relational experience which is music making, and which lies at the heart of the therapy is rendered in careful and dispassionate text. There are good reasons for this, and for the steady growth of ‘evidence-based practice’, which lie in the history of the profession and its search for validation. Yet the evidence which is shared in these texts has tended to become increasingly disconnected from many features of the musical therapeutic encounter that music therapists value.In this study, conceived from a critical realist perspective, I ask ‘what is experience in music therapy’, ‘what is evidence in music therapy’, ‘are evidence and experience in fact the same thing, or could they be’? I look at my own experiences, and evidencing of these experiences, gained across 24 years of working as a music therapist. In so doing, I find I cannot maintain a single role or persona. Unexpectedly, in the course of this reflexive exploration, four Roles arrive noisily and will not go away (Music Therapist, Researcher, Musician and Carer). They debate, argue and probe at the heart of what counts, and at the cultures of music therapy which systematise and perpetuate what counts. They consider the turn to evidence-based practice in music therapy and ask ‘what is the evidence of’, and ‘does this make sense to insiders, outsiders, either, both’?This multivocal, dialogical approach allows me to adopt the different positions taken by each of the four Roles as they ask ‘does this make sense to me’, and to advocate for culture change in both music therapy and academia. It resonates with the focus of this research – experience, evidence and what counts in music therapy, and invites various different methodological approaches - autoethnography, arts-based research, phenomenology, and Aesthetic Critical Realism which is introduced to the field of music therapy for the first time. A complex web of different kinds of experience and evidence emerges through poems, stories, vignettes, images and mobile making and results in a concept of four phases of experience, leads to defined categories of different kinds of experience, and to the proposition that in music therapy, experience is evidence of personhood.The thesis is relational: those engaging with it are part of the network of experiences in the field of music therapy, because I conceptualise this field as including all musical, logistical, contractual, academic, public and informal encounters of all stakeholders, from participants to next-door neighbours. Protecting Privacy in Indian Schools: Regulating AI-based Technologies' Design, Development and Deployment
Education is one of the priority areas for the Indian government, where Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies are touted to bring digital transformation. Several Indian states have also started deploying facial recognition-enabled CCTV cameras, emotion recognition technologies, fingerprint scanners, and Radio frequency identification tags in their schools to provide personalised recommendations, ensure student security, and predict the drop-out rate of students but also provide 360-degree information of a student. Further, Integrating Aadhaar (digital identity card that works on biometric data) across AI technologies and learning and management systems (LMS) renders schools a ‘panopticon’.
Certain technologies or systems like Aadhaar, CCTV cameras, GPS Systems, RFID tags, and learning management systems are used primarily for continuous data collection, storage, and retention purposes. Though they cannot be termed AI technologies per se, they are fundamental for designing and developing AI systems like facial, fingerprint, and emotion recognition technologies. The large amount of student data collected speedily through the former technologies is used to create an algorithm for the latter-stated AI systems. Once algorithms are processed using machine learning (ML) techniques, they learn correlations between multiple datasets predicting each student’s identity, decisions, grades, learning growth, tendency to drop out, and other behavioural characteristics. Such autonomous and repetitive collection, processing, storage, and retention of student data without effective data protection legislation endangers student privacy.
The algorithmic predictions by AI technologies are an avatar of the data fed into the system. An AI technology is as good as the person collecting the data, processing it for a relevant and valuable output, and regularly evaluating the inputs going inside an AI model. An AI model can produce inaccurate predictions if the person overlooks any relevant data. However, the state, school administrations and parents’ belief in AI technologies as a panacea to student security and educational development overlooks the context in which ‘data practices’ are conducted. A right to privacy in an AI age is inextricably connected to data practices where data gets ‘cooked’. Thus, data protection legislation operating without understanding and regulating such data practices will remain ineffective in safeguarding privacy.
The thesis undergoes interdisciplinary research that enables a better understanding of the interplay of data practices of AI technologies with social practices of an Indian school, which the present Indian data protection legislation overlooks, endangering students’ privacy from designing and developing to deploying stages of an AI model. The thesis recommends the Indian legislature frame better legislation equipped for the AI/ML age and the Indian judiciary on evaluating the legality and reasonability of designing, developing, and deploying such technologies in schools
Serverless Cloud Computing: A Comparative Analysis of Performance, Cost, and Developer Experiences in Container-Level Services
Serverless cloud computing is a subset of cloud computing considerably adopted to build modern web applications, while the underlying server and infrastructure management duties are abstracted from customers to the cloud vendors. In serverless computing, customers must pay for the runtime consumed by their services, but they are exempt from paying for the idle time. Prior to serverless containers, customers needed to provision, scale, and manage servers, which was a bottleneck for rapidly growing customer-facing applications where latency and scaling were a concern.
The viability of adopting a serverless platform for a web application regarding performance, cost, and developer experiences is studied in this thesis. Three serverless container-level services are employed in this study from AWS and GCP. The services include GCP Cloud Run, GKE AutoPilot, and AWS EKS with AWS Fargate. Platform as a Service (PaaS) underpins the former, and Container as a Service (CaaS) the remainder. A single-page web application was created to perform incremental and spike load tests on those services to assess the performance differences. Furthermore, the cost differences are compared and analyzed. Lastly, the final element considered while evaluating the developer experiences is the complexity of using the services during the project implementation.
Based on the results of this research, it was determined that PaaS-based solutions are a high-performing, affordable alternative for CaaS-based solutions in circumstances where high levels of traffic are periodically anticipated, but sporadic latency is never a concern.
