    Performance Improvement of Wide-Area-Monitoring-System (WAMS) and Applications Development

    Wide area monitoring system (WAMS), as an application of situation awareness, provides essential information for power system monitoring, planning, operation, and control. To fully utilize WAMS in smart grid, it is important to investigate and improve its performance, and develop advanced applications based on the data from WAMS. In this dissertation, the work on improving the WAMS performance and developing advanced applications are introduced.To improve the performance of WAMS, the work includes investigation of the impacts of measurement error and the requirements of system based on WAMS, and the solutions. PMU is one of the main sensors for WAMS. The phasor and frequency estimation algorithms implemented highly influence the performance of PMUs, and therefore the WAMS. The algorithms of PMUs are reviewed in Chapter 2. To understand how the errors impact WAMS application, different applications are investigated in Chapter 3, and their requirements of accuracy are given. In chapter 4, the error model of PMUs are developed, regarding different parameters of input signals and PMU operation conditions. The factors influence of accuracy of PMUs are analyzed in Chapter 5, including both internal and external error sources. Specifically, the impacts of increase renewables are analyzed. Based on the analysis above, a novel PMU is developed in Chapter 6, including algorithm and realization. This PMU is able to provide high accurate and fast responding measurements during both steady and dynamic state. It is potential to improve the performance of WAMS. To improve the interoperability, the C37.118.2 based data communication protocol is curtailed and realized for single-phase distribution-level PMUs, which are presented in Chapter 7.WAMS-based applications are developed and introduced in Chapter 8-10. The first application is to use the spatial and temporal characterization of power system frequency for data authentication, location estimation and the detection of cyber-attack. The second application is to detect the GPS attack on the synchronized time interval. The third application is to detect the geomagnetically induced currents (GIC) resulted from GMD and EMP-E3. These applications, benefited from the novel PMU proposed in Chapter 6, can be used to enhance the security and robust of power system

    Coordinated Control of Distributed Energy Resources in Islanded Microgrids

    As the penetration of the distributed energy resources (DERs) in the power grid increases,new challenges are revealed, including: stability issues, frequency fluctuations, voltage control, protection system coordination, etc. A systematic approach for dealing with those issues is to view the DERs and associated loads as a subsystem or a microgrid (MG). MGs can operate either in the grid connected or islanded modes. As opposed to the grid connected mode, the voltage and frequency regulation and load/generation balancing during islanded mode is solely dependent on the local generation units. Therefore, stable and reliable operation of islanded MGs requires a real time coordinated control scheme. Conventionally, such coordination is achieved by means of the active power-frequency and reactive powervoltage droop control schemes. The conventional droop method, which is based on P-f droop concept in power systems, lacks compatibility with the resistive nature of networks as well as the low inertia of electronically interfaced DER units in MGs. As a result, it features a slow dynamic response but also a low power quality due to frequency and voltage fluctuations. This PhD research proposes a novel droop concept based on the global positioning system (GPS) and voltage-current (V-I) droop characteristics for coordination of inverter-based DER units in islanded MGs. The concept of V-I droop control is introduced in Chapter 2. In this control approach, each DER is equipped with a GPS receiver, which produces a pulse at frequency of 1Hz (1PPS). Since all GPS receivers are locked to atomic clocks of the GPS satellites, the 1PPS signal can be utilized to synchronize the time reference of the DER units. Using the common time reference and fixing the frequency at the nominal value, all of the units can share a common synchronous rotating reference frame (SRRF). Furthermore, proportional load sharing is achieved by drooping the d and q axis components of the reference voltage with respect to the d and q axis components of current, respectively. The proposed scheme not only circumvents the issue of frequency fluctuations but also is in accordance with the fast dynamics of inverter-based DER units and resistive nature of the networks in islanded MGs. The V-I droop scheme, in its basic form, relies on availability of GPS signals at each of the DER units. With the intention of improving the MG robustness with respect to GPS signal failure, a new control strategy based on V-I droop concept is presented Chapter 3. In this method, an adaptive reactive power-frequency droop scheme is used as a backup for the V-I droop controller to ensure synchronization in case of a GPS signal failure. Droop control schemes in general, and the proposed V-I droop strategy in particular are characterized by non-ideal sharing of current among the DER units due to the variations of voltage along the MGs. In order to improve the sharing accuracy of the V-I droop scheme iv while regulating the average voltage at the nominal value, a new distributed secondary control method based on consensus protocol is proposed in Chapter 4. In this method, the daxis droop characteristics is altered so as to regulate the average microgrid voltage to the rated value but also guarantee proper sharing of active power among the DERs. Additionally, the q-axis component of voltage is adjusted to perform proper sharing of current. Generally, DERs might be supplied from different energy sources, including renewables and storage systems. The intermittency of renewable energy resources on one hand and the limited capacity of the energy storage systems on the other hand, necessitate modification of droop characteristics based on an energy management plan. In Chapter 5, a novel distributed secondary control strategy is introduced for power management of integrated photovoltaicbattery DER units in islanded MGs. The distributed secondary controllers are coordinated based on a leader-follower framework, where the leader restores the MG voltage to the rated value and the followers pursue energy management. Unbalanced and nonlinear loads, which are quite common in MGs, adversely affect the power quality and sharing accuracy. In order to mitigate those issues, two new solutions are proposed in this thesis. In the first approach (Chapter 6), a new supplementary droop control scheme is added to the V-I droop controller to reduce the voltage unbalance while preventing current and power overload under unbalanced loading conditions. In the second approach (Chapter 7), a hierarchical control scheme, consisting of primary (modified V-I droop) and distributed secondary control levels is introduced to mitigate harmonic distortions and prevent overcurrent stresses under nonlinear and unbalanced loading conditions. Finally, the conclusions and possible future work are addressed in Chapter 8

    Oscillation Analysis and its Mitigation Using Inverter-Based Resources in Large-Scale Power Grids

    In today\u27s interconnected power grids, forced oscillations and poorly damped low-frequency oscillations are major concerns that can damage equipment, limit power transfer capability, and deteriorate power system stability. The first part of the dissertation focuses on the impact of a wide-area power oscillation damping (POD) controller via voltage source converter-based high voltage direct current (VSC-HVDC) in enhancing the power system stability and improving the damping of low-frequency oscillation. The POD controller\u27s performance was investigated under a three-phase temporary line fault. The Great Britain (G.B.) power grid model validated the POD controller performance via active power modulation of VSC-HVDC through TSAT-RTDS hybrid simulation. The developed POD controller is also implemented on a general-purpose hardware platform CompactRIO and tested on a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test setup with actual PMU devices and a communication network impairment simulator. A variety of real-world operating conditions is considered in the HIL tests, including measurement error/noise, occasional/consecutive data package losses, constant/random time delays, and multiple backups PMUs. The second part of the dissertation proposes a two‐dimensional scanning forced oscillation grid vulnerability analysis method to identify areas/zones and oscillation frequency in the system critical to forced oscillation. These critical areas/zones can be considered effective actuator locations to deploy forced oscillation damping controllers. Additionally, a POD controller through inverter-based resources (IBRs) is proposed to reduce the forced oscillation impact on the entire grid. The proposed method is tested when the external perturbation is active power and compared with the reactive power perturbation result. The proposed method is validated through a case study on the 2000-bus synthetic Texas power system model. The simulation results demonstrate that the critical areas/zones of forced oscillation are related to the areas that highly participate in the natural oscillation. Furthermore, forced oscillation through active power disturbance can have a more severe impact than reactive power disturbance, especially at resonance. The proposed forced oscillation controller can mitigate the impact of the forced oscillation on the entire system when the actuator is close to the forced oscillation source. In addition, active power modulation of IBR can provide better damping performance than reactive power modulation

    Power System Stability Analysis Using Wide Area Measurement System

    Advances in wide area measurement systems have transformed power system operation from simple visualization, state estimation, and post-mortem analysis tools to real-time protection and control at the systems level. Transient disturbances (such as lightning strikes) exist only for a fraction of a second but create transient stability issues and often trigger cascading type failures. The most common practice to prevent instabilities is with local generator out-of-step protection. Unfortunately, out-of-step protection operation of generators may not be fast enough, and an instability may take down nearby generators and the rest of the system by the time the local generator relay operates. Hence, it is important to assess power system stability over transmission lines as soon as the transient instability is detected instead of relying on purely localized out-of-step protection in generators. This thesis proposes a synchrophasor-based out-of-step prediction methodology at the transmission line level using wide area measurements from optimal phasor measurement unit (PMU) locations in the interconnected system. Voltage and current measurements from wide area measurement systems (WAMS) are utilized to find the swing angles. The proposed scheme was used to predict the first swing out-of-step condition in a Western Systems Coordinating Council (WSCC) 9 bus power system. A coherency analysis was first performed in this multi-machine system to determine the two coherent groups of generators. The coherent generator groups were then represented with a two-machine equivalent system, and the synchrophasor-based out-of-step prediction algorithm then applied to the reduced equivalent system. The coherency among the group of generators was determined within 100 ms for the contingency scenarios tested. The proposed technique is able to predict the instability 141.66 to 408.33 ms before the system actually reaches out-of-step conditions. The power swing trajectory is either a steady-state trajectory, monotonically increasing type (when the system becomes unstable), or oscillatory type (under stable conditions). Un- der large disturbance conditions, the swing could also become non-stationary. The mean and variance of the signal is not constant when it is monotonically increasing or non-stationary. An autoregressive integrated (ARI) approach was developed in this thesis, with differentiation of two successive samples done to make the mean and variance constant and facilitate time series prediction of the swing curve. Electromagnetic transient simulations with a real-time digital simulator (RTDS) were used to test the accuracy of the proposed algorithm with respect to predicting transient in- stability conditions. The studies show that the proposed method is computationally efficient and accurate for larger power systems. The proposed technique was also compared with a conventional two blinder technique and swing center voltage method. The proposed method was also implemented with actual PMU measurements from a relay (General Electric (GE) N60 relay). The testing was carried out with an interface between the N60 relay and the RTDS. The WSCC 9 bus system was modeled in the simulator and the analog time signals from the optimal location in the network communicated to the N60 relay. The synchrophasor data from the PMUs in the N60 were used to back-calculate the rotor angles of the generators in the system. Once the coherency was established, the swing curves for the coherent group of generators were found from time series prediction (ARI model). The test results with the actual PMUs match quite well with the results obtained from virtual PMU-based testing in the RTDS. The calculation times for the time series prediction are also very small. This thesis also discusses a novel out-of-step detection technique that was investigated in the course of this work for an IEEE Power Systems Relaying Committee J-5 Working Group document using real-time measurements of generator accelerating power. Using the derivative or second derivative of a measurement variable significantly amplifies the noise term and has limited the actual application of some methods in the literature, such as local measurements of voltage or voltage deviations at generator terminals. Another problem with the voltage based methods is taking an average over a period; the intermediate values cancel out and, as a result, just the first and last sample values are used to find the speed. This effectively means that the sample values in between are not used. The first solution proposed to overcome this is a polynomial fitting of the points of the calculated derivative points (to calculate speed). The second solution is the integral of the accelerating power method (this eliminates taking a derivative altogether). This technique shows the direct relationship of electrical power deviation to rotor acceleration and the integral of accelerating power to generator speed deviation. The accelerating power changes are straightforward to measure and the values obtained are more stable during transient conditions.
