    Architectures for maximum-sequence-length digital delta-sigma modulators

    In this paper, we extend the idea developed in some of our earlier works of using output feedback to make the quantization step in a digital delta-sigma modulator (DDSM) appear prime. This maximizes the cycle lengths for constant inputs, spreading the quantization error over the maximum number of frequency terms, and consequently, minimizing the power per tone. We show how this concept can be applied to multibit higher order error-feedback modulators (EFMs). In addition, we show that the idea can be implemented in a class of single-quantizer DDSMs (SQ-DDSM) where STF (z) = z(-L) and NTF (z) = (1 - Z(-1))(L)

    Influence of initial conditions on the fundamental periods of LFSR-dithered MASH digital delta-sigma modulators with constant inputs

    A digital delta-sigma modulator (DDSM) with a constant input may produce a periodic output with a small fundamental period, resulting in strong tonal output behavior instead of the expected shaped white quantization noise. In practice, the problem is alleviated by dithering the DDSM. Pseudorandom dither generators based on linear feedback shift registers (LFSRs) are widely used to "break up" periodic cycles in DDSMs with constant inputs. Pseudorandom dither signals are themselves periodic and can lead to relatively short output sequences from dithered DDSMs. It is known that the fundamental period of the output signal depends not only on the input and the initial condition of the DDSM but also on the initial state of the LFSR. This brief shows that bad LFSR initial conditions can lead to ineffective dithering, producing short cycles and strong tonal behavior. Furthermore, it explains how to set the initial state of the DDSM as a function of the initial state of the LFSR in order to obtain a maximum-length dithered output

    Prediction of phase noise and spurs in a nonlinear fractional-N frequency synthesizer

    Integer boundary spurs appear in the passband of the loop response of fractional-N phase lock loops and are, therefore, a potentially significant component of the phase noise. In spite of measures guaranteeing spur-free modulator outputs, the interaction of the modulation noise from a divider controller with inevitable loop nonlinearities produces such spurs. This paper presents analytical predictions of the locations and amplitudes of the spurs and accompanying noise floor levels produced by interaction between a divider controller output and a PLL loop with a static nonlinearity. A key finding is that the spur locations and amplitudes can be estimated by using only the knowledge of the structure and pdf of the accumulated modulator noise and the nonlinearity. These predictions also offer new insights into why the spurs appear

    Direct digital synthesizers : theory, design and applications

    Traditional designs of high bandwidth frequency synthesizers employ the use of a phase-locked-loop (PLL). A direct digital synthesizer (DDS) provides many significant advantages over the PLL approaches. Fast settling time, sub-Hertz frequency resolution, continuous-phase switching response and low phase noise are features easily obtainable in the DDS systems. Although the principle of the DDS has been known for many years, the DDS did not play a dominant role in wideband frequency generation until recent years. Earlier DDSs were limited to produce narrow bands of closely spaced frequencies, due to limitations of digital logic and D/A-converter technologies. Recent advantages in integrated circuit (IC) technologies have brought about remarkable progress in this area. By programming the DDS, adaptive channel bandwidths, modulation formats, frequency hopping and data rates are easily achieved. This is an important step towards a "software-radio" which can be used in various systems. The DDS could be applied in the modulator or demodulator in the communication systems. The applications of DDS are restricted to the modulator in the base station. The aim of this research was to find an optimal front-end for a transmitter by focusing on the circuit implementations of the DDS, but the research also includes the interface to baseband circuitry and system level design aspects of digital communication systems. The theoretical analysis gives an overview of the functioning of DDS, especially with respect to noise and spurs. Different spur reduction techniques are studied in detail. Four ICs, which were the circuit implementations of the DDS, were designed. One programmable logic device implementation of the CORDIC based quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) modulator was designed with a separate D/A converter IC. For the realization of these designs some new building blocks, e.g. a new tunable error feedback structure and a novel and more cost-effective digital power ramp generator, were developed.reviewe

    Integrated radio frequency synthetizers for wireless applications

    This thesis consists of six publications and an overview of the research topic, which is also a summary of the work. The research described in this thesis concentrates on the design of phase-locked loop radio frequency synthesizers for wireless applications. In particular, the focus is on the implementation of the prescaler, the phase detector, and the chargepump. This work reviews the requirements set for the frequency synthesizer by the wireless standards, and how these requirements are derived from the system specifications. These requirements apply to both integer-N and fractional-N synthesizers. The work also introduces the special considerations related to the design of fractional-N phase-locked loops. Finally, implementation alternatives for the different building blocks of the synthesizer are reviewed. The presented work introduces new topologies for the phase detector and the chargepump, and improved topologies for high speed CMOS prescalers. The experimental results show that the presented topologies can be successfully used in both integer-N and fractional-N synthesizers with state-of-the-art performance. The last part of this work discusses the additional considerations that surface when the synthesizer is integrated into a larger system chip. It is shown experimentally that the synthesizer can be successfully integrated into a complex transceiver IC without sacrificing the performance of the synthesizer or the transceiver.reviewe

    Nonlinear models and algorithms for RF systems digital calibration

    Focusing on the receiving side of a communication system, the current trend in pushing the digital domain ever more closer to the antenna sets heavy constraints on the accuracy and linearity of the analog front-end and the conversion devices. Moreover, mixed-signal implementations of Systems-on-Chip using nanoscale CMOS processes result in an overall poorer analog performance and a reduced yield. To cope with the impairments of the low performance analog section in this "dirty RF" scenario, two solutions exist: designing more complex analog processing architectures or to identify the errors and correct them in the digital domain using DSP algorithms. In the latter, constraints in the analog circuits' precision can be offloaded to a digital signal processor. This thesis aims at the development of a methodology for the analysis, the modeling and the compensation of the analog impairments arising in different stages of a receiving chain using digital calibration techniques. Both single and multiple channel architectures are addressed exploiting the capability of the calibration algorithm to homogenize all the channels' responses of a multi-channel system in addition to the compensation of nonlinearities in each response. The systems targeted for the application of digital post compensation are a pipeline ADC, a digital-IF sub-sampling receiver and a 4-channel TI-ADC. The research focuses on post distortion methods using nonlinear dynamic models to approximate the post-inverse of the nonlinear system and to correct the distortions arising from static and dynamic errors. Volterra model is used due to its general approximation capabilities for the compensation of nonlinear systems with memory. Digital calibration is applied to a Sample and Hold and to a pipeline ADC simulated in the 45nm process, demonstrating high linearity improvement even with incomplete settling errors enabling the use of faster clock speeds. An extended model based on the baseband Volterra series is proposed and applied to the compensation of a digital-IF sub-sampling receiver. This architecture envisages frequency selectivity carried out at IF by an active band-pass CMOS filter causing in-band and out-of-band nonlinear distortions. The improved performance of the proposed model is demonstrated with circuital simulations of a 10th-order band pass filter, realized using a five-stage Gm-C Biquad cascade, and validated using out-of-sample sinusoidal and QAM signals. The same technique is extended to an array receiver with mismatched channels' responses showing that digital calibration can compensate the loss of directivity and enhance the overall system SFDR. An iterative backward pruning is applied to the Volterra models showing that complexity can be reduced without impacting linearity, obtaining state-of-the-art accuracy/complexity performance. Calibration of Time-Interleaved ADCs, widely used in RF-to-digital wideband receivers, is carried out developing ad hoc models because the steep discontinuities generated by the imperfect canceling of aliasing would require a huge number of terms in a polynomial approximation. A closed-form solution is derived for a 4-channel TI-ADC affected by gain errors and timing skews solving the perfect reconstruction equations. A background calibration technique is presented based on cyclo-stationary filter banks architecture. Convergence speed and accuracy of the recursive algorithm are discussed and complexity reduction techniques are applied

    Low harmonic distortion flash A/D converters incorporating dynamic element matching techniques

    New dynamic element matching techniques are shown to reduce the harmonic distortion and improve the spurious-free dynamic range of flash ADCs. Resistor chain mismatch errors are negated by randomly rearranging the resistors each sample by utilizing 5(2{dollar}\sp{b}{dollar}-1) digital switches and b + 1 random control signals for a b-bit flash ADC. The integral and differential nonlinearity of a non-ideal flash ADC are derived for three common resistor chain mismatch errors; namely, geometric mismatches, linear gradient mismatches, and dynamic mismatches. The transfer function of a non-ideal flash ADC is also derived and the converter output is shown to consist of a scaled copy of the input, a DC gain, and conversion noise that is a function of the resistor mismatches. A comprehensive summary of dynamic element matching techniques given in literature is provided. In addition, the DEM network introduced by Galton and Jensen is shown to be equivalent to the generalized-cube network used in parallel processing architectures. An alternative version of this network that uses logic gates is also proposed

    Digital delta-sigma modulators (DDSMs) are finite state machines; their spectra are characterized by strong periodic tones (so-called spurs) when they cycle repeatedly in time through a small number of states. This can happen for a range of constant and periodic inputs. Pseudorandom dither generators are widely used to break up periodic cycles in DDSMs in order to eliminate spurs produced by underlying periodic behavior. Unfortunately, pseudorandom dither signals are themselves periodic and therefore can produce spurs in the output spectrum. We call pseudorandom dithering effective if it breaks up periodic cycles in the modulator without producing its own spurs in the output spectrum.
