Combining Local Appearance and Holistic View: Dual-Source Deep Neural Networks for Human Pose Estimation
We propose a new learning-based method for estimating 2D human pose from a
single image, using Dual-Source Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DS-CNN).
Recently, many methods have been developed to estimate human pose by using pose
priors that are estimated from physiologically inspired graphical models or
learned from a holistic perspective. In this paper, we propose to integrate
both the local (body) part appearance and the holistic view of each local part
for more accurate human pose estimation. Specifically, the proposed DS-CNN
takes a set of image patches (category-independent object proposals for
training and multi-scale sliding windows for testing) as the input and then
learns the appearance of each local part by considering their holistic views in
the full body. Using DS-CNN, we achieve both joint detection, which determines
whether an image patch contains a body joint, and joint localization, which
finds the exact location of the joint in the image patch. Finally, we develop
an algorithm to combine these joint detection/localization results from all the
image patches for estimating the human pose. The experimental results show the
effectiveness of the proposed method by comparing to the state-of-the-art
human-pose estimation methods based on pose priors that are estimated from
physiologically inspired graphical models or learned from a holistic

Good Features to Correlate for Visual Tracking
During the recent years, correlation filters have shown dominant and
spectacular results for visual object tracking. The types of the features that
are employed in these family of trackers significantly affect the performance
of visual tracking. The ultimate goal is to utilize robust features invariant
to any kind of appearance change of the object, while predicting the object
location as properly as in the case of no appearance change. As the deep
learning based methods have emerged, the study of learning features for
specific tasks has accelerated. For instance, discriminative visual tracking
methods based on deep architectures have been studied with promising
performance. Nevertheless, correlation filter based (CFB) trackers confine
themselves to use the pre-trained networks which are trained for object
classification problem. To this end, in this manuscript the problem of learning
deep fully convolutional features for the CFB visual tracking is formulated. In
order to learn the proposed model, a novel and efficient backpropagation
algorithm is presented based on the loss function of the network. The proposed
learning framework enables the network model to be flexible for a custom
design. Moreover, it alleviates the dependency on the network trained for
classification. Extensive performance analysis shows the efficacy of the
proposed custom design in the CFB tracking framework. By fine-tuning the
convolutional parts of a state-of-the-art network and integrating this model to
a CFB tracker, which is the top performing one of VOT2016, 18% increase is
achieved in terms of expected average overlap, and tracking failures are
decreased by 25%, while maintaining the superiority over the state-of-the-art

A Survey on Deep Learning in Medical Image Analysis
Deep learning algorithms, in particular convolutional networks, have rapidly
become a methodology of choice for analyzing medical images. This paper reviews
the major deep learning concepts pertinent to medical image analysis and
summarizes over 300 contributions to the field, most of which appeared in the
last year. We survey the use of deep learning for image classification, object
detection, segmentation, registration, and other tasks and provide concise
overviews of studies per application area. Open challenges and directions for

Hybrid LSTM and Encoder-Decoder Architecture for Detection of Image Forgeries
With advanced image journaling tools, one can easily alter the semantic
meaning of an image by exploiting certain manipulation techniques such as
copy-clone, object splicing, and removal, which mislead the viewers. In
contrast, the identification of these manipulations becomes a very challenging
task as manipulated regions are not visually apparent. This paper proposes a
high-confidence manipulation localization architecture which utilizes
resampling features, Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM) cells, and encoder-decoder
network to segment out manipulated regions from non-manipulated ones.
Resampling features are used to capture artifacts like JPEG quality loss,
upsampling, downsampling, rotation, and shearing. The proposed network exploits
larger receptive fields (spatial maps) and frequency domain correlation to
analyze the discriminative characteristics between manipulated and
non-manipulated regions by incorporating encoder and LSTM network. Finally,
decoder network learns the mapping from low-resolution feature maps to
pixel-wise predictions for image tamper localization. With predicted mask
provided by final layer (softmax) of the proposed architecture, end-to-end
training is performed to learn the network parameters through back-propagation
using ground-truth masks. Furthermore, a large image splicing dataset is
introduced to guide the training process. The proposed method is capable of
localizing image manipulations at pixel level with high precision, which is
