Analyzing how emotion awareness influences students' motivation, engagement, self-regulation and learning outcome
Starting from Volume 17 Issue 4, all published articles of the Journal of Educational Technology & Society are available under Creative Commons CC-BY-ND-NC 3.0 license.Considering social and emotional competence in learning, emotion awareness aims to detect the emotions that students show during their learning interactions and make these emotions explicit to them. Being aware of their emotions, students become more conscious of their situation, what may prompt them to behavioral change. The main goal of this work is to analyze the effects of emotion awareness, supported by specific teaching strategies, on studentsâ motivation, engagement, self-regulation and learning outcome in long-term blended collaborative learning practices. A bilateral goal also involves an initial study that explores the way emotion awareness affects teacherâs attitude and feedback as well as the competencies that teachers need to have in order to achieve a positive change on studentsâ affective and cognitive state. To this end a quasi-experimental study was designed with high school students. The results of this study show that when students are aware of their emotions and guided by specific teaching strategies, their learning performance improves in relation to their motivation, engagement and self-regulation. Smartphones give you wings: pedagogical affordances of mobile Web 2.0
Built on the foundation of four years of research and implementation of mobile learning projects
(mlearning), this paper provides an overview of the potential of the integration of mobile web 2.0 tools
(based around smartphones) to facilitate social constructivist pedagogies and engage students in tertiary
education. Pedagogical affordances of mobile web 2.0 tools are evaluated, and student usage and
feedback is outlined via an interactive multimedia timeline (using YouTube videos) illustrating how these
mobile web 2.0 pedagogical affordances have transformed pedagogy and facilitated student engagement
in a variety of course contexts. A rubric for evaluating appropriate smartphone choices is provided, and a
model for implementing mobile web 2.0 pedagogical integration is presented.

Making the Connection: Mooreâs Theory of Transactional Distance and Its Relevance to the Use of a Virtual Classroom in Postgraduate Online Teacher Education
This study explored the use of the Web-based virtual environment, Adobe Connect Pro, in a postgraduate online teacher education programme at the University of Waikato. It applied the tenets of Mooreâs Theory of Transactional Distance (Moore, 1997) in examining the efficacy of using the virtual classroom to promote quality dialogue and explored how both internal and external structural elements related to the purpose and use of the classroom affected the sense of learner autonomy. The study provides an illustration of the complexity of the relationship that exists between the elements of Mooreâs theory, and how the implementation of an external structuring technology such as the virtual classroom, can have both positive impacts (dialogue creation) and negative impacts (diminished sense of learner autonomy). It also suggests that, although Mooreâs theory provides a useful conceptual âlensâ through which to analyse online learning practices, its tenets may need revisiting to reflect the move toward the use of synchronous communication tools in online distance learning
Organizational Excellence in Palestinian Universities of Gaza Strip
The research aims to identify the organizational excellence in Palestinian universities of Gaza Strip, from the perspective of senior management. The questionnaires were distributed the top senior management in the Palestinian universities, and the study population was (344) employees in senior management in Palestinian universities. A stratified random sample were selected from of employees in the Palestinian universities consist of (182) employees at return rate of (69.2%). SPSS program for analyzing and processing the data was used. The study reached the following results: the senior management agrees largely on the importance of the axis of "Leadership Excellence" and "Excellence service sectors". The senior management agrees moderately about the importance of the axis of the âKnowledge excellence". The study showed that there is a weakness in the employment of scientific research to serve the community, there is weakness in the follow-up of the universities management for the performance of their graduates in the institutions in which they work. Senior management agrees on the importance of the "Organizational Excellence" moderately. The recommendations of study includes: the need to develop principles and fair criteria for the selection of the best candidates for the university and university leaders based on specialization, competence, experience, skills, integrity and not on the basis of favoritism
TOWARDS A FUTURISTIC EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA
Majority of the nations of the world were colonized and went through wars at various times, but
had turned around their fortunes through economic and educational reforms. In Nigeria however,
there had been series of educational reforms from: 7/6-5-4 to 6-3-3-4 and now 9-3-4 system.
Similarly, the recent reform in the higher education sector which has resulted into the conversion
of the nationâs higher technical educational institutions to degree awarding universities, which
arose largely from the disparity between the graduates of the two institutions in the labor market
and the fallen standard of education.
This paper presents a critical review of the various educational reforms with a view to designing
a viable educational model based on the examples of some developed and developing nations. It
attempts to proffer solutions to some of the existing problems

What Drives Students' Loyalty-Formation in Social Media Learning Within a Personal Learning Environment Approach? The Moderating Role of Need for Cognition
Our study analyzes an educational experience based on the integrated use of social media within a higher education course under a personal learning environment approach and investigates the factors that determine students' loyalty to social media learning. We examined the moderating role of need for cognition (NFC) in students' formation of attitudes, satisfaction, and loyalty toward this learning experience. The results indicate that NFC has an influence on these variables, significantly moderating how loyalty toward social media learning is formed. For high-NFC students, satisfaction with the learning experience is the most important variable to explain loyalty; whereas for low-NFC students, attitudes have a stronger effect. Different strategies are suggested, according to the learners' NFC levels, for increasing the use of social media in personal learning environments. Learning in the Panopticon: ethical and social issues in building a virtual educational environment
This paper examines ethical and social issues which have proved important when initiating and creating educational spaces within a virtual environment. It focuses on one project, identifying the key decisions made, the barriers to new practice encountered and the impact these had on the project. It demonstrates the importance of the âbackstageâ ethical and social issues involved in the creation of a virtual education community and offers conclusions, and questions, which will inform future research and practice in this area. These ethical issues are considered using Knobelâs framework of front-end, in-process and back-end concerns, and include establishing social practices for the islands, allocating access rights, considering personal safety and supporting researchers appropriately within this contex
