    A service oriented architecture to provide data mining services for non-expert data miners

    In today's competitive market, companies need to use discovery knowledge techniques to make better, more informed decisions. But these techniques are out of the reach of most users as the knowledge discovery process requires an incredible amount of expertise. Additionally, business intelligence vendors are moving their systems to the cloud in order to provide services which offer companies cost-savings, better performance and faster access to new applications. This work joins both facets. It describes a data mining service addressed to non-expert data miners which can be delivered as Software-as-a-Service. Its main advantage is that by simply indicating where the data file is, the service itself is able to perform all the process. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

    An adaptive methodology for the improvement of knowledge acquisition by a multimedia web tool

    Adaptive learning is a method that personalizes the teaching-learning strategies in accordance with the needs and preferences of each student. This article describes the design, the implementation and the tests of a web application developed with adaptive learning in order to improve student knowledge acquisition and to simplify the teacher’s work. The tool uses EventSource technologies combined with heuristic functions to produce a predictive algorithm, which is capable of being adapted to the students in a customized way by presenting the content adjusted according to their cognitive needs. The design is based on the hypothesis that the acquisition of knowledge can be improved by using a computing application which presents a syllabus to be learned in various forms. In this way, the application determines students’ progress within the content of the material, which is classified by branches of knowledge. The tool was applied to one group of students and the data that we obtained was compared with the results of the rest, subject to the usual knowledge transmission system.     Astrophysics datamining in the classroom: Exploring real data with new software tools and robotic telescopes

    Within the efforts to bring frontline interactive astrophysics and astronomy to the classroom, the Hands on Universe (HOU) developed a set of exercises and platform using real data obtained by some of the most advanced ground and space observatories. The backbone of this endeavour is a new free software Web tool - Such a Lovely Software for Astronomy based on Image J (Salsa J). It is student-friendly and developed specifically for the HOU project and targets middle and high schools. It allows students to display, analyze, and explore professionally obtained astronomical images, while learning concepts on gravitational dynamics, kinematics, nuclear fusion, electromagnetism. The continuous evolving set of exercises and tutorials is being completed with real (professionally obtained) data to download and detailed tutorials. The flexibility of the Salsa J platform tool enables students and teachers to extend the exercises with their own observations. The software developed for the HOU program has been designed to be a multi-platform, multi-lingual experience for image manipulation and analysis in the classroom. Its design enables easy implementation of new facilities (extensions and plugins), minimal in-situ maintenance and flexibility for exercise plugin.     Survey of Personalized Learning Software Systems: A Taxonomy of Environments, Learning Content, and User Models

    This paper presents a comprehensive systematic review of personalized learning software systems. All the systems under review are designed to aid educational stakeholders by personalizing one or more facets of the learning process. This is achieved by exploring and analyzing the common architectural attributes among personalized learning software systems. A literature-driven taxonomy is recognized and built to categorize and analyze the reviewed literature. Relevant papers are filtered to produce a final set of full systems to be reviewed and analyzed. In this meta-review, a set of 72 selected personalized learning software systems have been reviewed and categorized based on the proposed personalized learning taxonomy. The proposed taxonomy outlines the three main architectural components of any personalized learning software system: learning environment, learner model, and content. It further defines the different realizations and attributions of each component. Surveyed systems have been analyzed under the proposed taxonomy according to their architectural components, usage, strengths, and weaknesses. Then, the role of these systems in the development of the field of personalized learning systems is discussed.
