Using Technology to Enhance Pre-Service Teacher Preparation

Use of the internet to deliver a portion of the content in an introductory science, education, and technology methods course for pre-service teachers provides an opportunity for a much needed introduction to basic computer literacy. A web page was developed for use in conjunction with the math, science, and technology educational methods courses at Brooklyn College. Students are introduced to this page as a group in the computer lab, and work in small groups with more experienced students serving as mentors to other students. The Brooklyn College Science Education Webpage is designed as a simple jump page with links to various resources for science education. It serves as a starting point to expose pre-service teachers to a wide range of resources available to them on the world wide web and in the real world. Students use their internet research skills in open-ended assignments throughout the semester. The web page continues to serve as a resource for students in the next courses in the math and science education sequence. The Brooklyn College Science Education Webpage helps education graduates to begin their teaching better prepared to use technology in the classroom

University Students Promoting Science in the Community

Project SEARCH (Science Education and Research for Children) has brought these undergraduate students here today. It is an outreach program designed to bring the science resources of a large research university to classrooms and community centers. For the past 9 years, SEARCH students have spent 4 hours each week doing hands-on-science experiments, dissecting frogs, demonstrating microscopes, lecturing about the planets, playing computer games, exploring the World Wide Web, and creating Web pages.published or submitted for publicationis peer reviewe

Demographics, Experience, and Perceptions of Information Quality on the World Wide Web

Little empirical research on users’ perceptions of the information quality of the World Wide Web has been conducted. This study examines users’ perceptions of the quality of information found on the World Wide Web. The effect of demographic differences (age, gender, and education) and differences in experience (computer experience, Internet experience, experience conducting research using the Internet, and work experience) on users’ perceptions of the information quality of the World Wide Web are examined. Undergraduate and graduate students were surveyed using an instrument that builds on prior research by Wang and Strong (1996) identifying fifteen dimensions of data quality. Measures of demographic characteristics and experience were added to the survey. The findings will provide a basis for the development of interventions to sensitize users of the World Wide Web to information quality issues
