Industrial strategy and the UK regions: Sectorally narrow and spatially blind

    Get PDF
The UK government's new Industrial Strategy could have a significant impact on the country's regions and localities. However, this has received little attention to date. The analysis presented here examines the existing location of the sectors targeted by the first phase of the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund and the location of the R&D laboratories likely to be first in line for funding. In focusing on an extremely narrow range of sectors, the Fund is likely to have limited impact on the UK's persistent regional inequalities. The activities eligible for support account for relatively little of manufacturing or the rest of the economy and the basis of this targeting and its potential distributional consequences are spatially blind. As such, it runs the risk of widening regional divides in prosperity

Building the Field of Museum Studies in Portugal: The Role of Publications

    Get PDF
In recent decades we have seen the field of museum studies expand. This development has been supported by the contribution of several actors, in various ways. Publications are essential in this process, since they ensure visibility and access to the field of study, while helping to articulate different understandings, proposals and perspectives – both in theory and in practice – thus strengthening its development. This article considers the role of publications in building museology as a field of study in Portugal, especially from the 1990’s onwards. This empirical and exploratory study aims to analyse the evolution of publications in terms of contexts, initiatives and actors. While not intending to be exhaustive, we signal some dynamics, relations and trends from recent decades. The methodology adopted includes literature review and is based also on my empirical knowledge on the subject matter. The analysis presented can be significant in contemplating some of the key issues related to the trajectory of museum studies as a field of study over the last three decades.UID/HIS/00057/2013 (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-007702

Open and Equitable Scholarly Communications: Creating a More Inclusive Future

    Get PDF
For many years, the academic and research library workforce has worked to accelerate the transition to more open and equitable systems of scholarship. While significant progress has been made, barriers remain. The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) seeks to stimulate further advances through this action- oriented research agenda, which is designed to provide practical, actionable information for academic librarians; include the perspectives of historically underrepresented communities in order to expand the profession’s understanding of research environments and scholarly communication systems; and point librarians and other scholars toward important research questions to investigate. This report represents a yearlong process of reviewing the scholarly and practice-based literature to take into account established investigation coupled with extensive public consultation to identify the major problems facing the academic library community. Through interviews, focus groups, workshops, and an online survey, over 1,000 members of the ACRL community offered their thoughts and expertise to shape this research agenda. Incorporating guidance and input from ACRL’s Research and Scholarly Environment Committee and an advisory panel, this document recommends ways to make the scholarly communications and research environment more open, inclusive, and equitable
