Design: One, but in different forms
This overview paper defends an augmented cognitively oriented generic-design
hypothesis: there are both significant similarities between the design
activities implemented in different situations and crucial differences between
these and other cognitive activities; yet, characteristics of a design
situation (related to the design process, the designers, and the artefact)
introduce specificities in the corresponding cognitive activities and
structures that are used, and in the resulting designs. We thus augment the
classical generic-design hypothesis with that of different forms of designing.
We review the data available in the cognitive design research literature and
propose a series of candidates underlying such forms of design, outlining a
number of directions requiring further elaboration
Public access to environmental information: Past, present and future
Since the late 1960s and the "environmental revolution", information and information systems have been an integral part of the environmental debate. In the decade that has passed since the Rio conference and the establishment of the "sustainable development" principle, there have been legislative and practical moves to open access to environmental information for all stakeholders that are involved in environmental decision making processes. In this paper, the origins of environmental information and public environmental information systems are explored and scrutinised. The paper questions the current state of the art in environmental information provision, and offers some directions for possible improvements. © 2002 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd
Designing as Construction of Representations: A Dynamic Viewpoint in Cognitive Design Research
This article presents a cognitively oriented viewpoint on design. It focuses
on cognitive, dynamic aspects of real design, i.e., the actual cognitive
activity implemented by designers during their work on professional design
projects. Rather than conceiving de-signing as problem solving - Simon's
symbolic information processing (SIP) approach - or as a reflective practice or
some other form of situated activity - the situativity (SIT) approach - we
consider that, from a cognitive viewpoint, designing is most appropriately
characterised as a construction of representations. After a critical discussion
of the SIP and SIT approaches to design, we present our view-point. This
presentation concerns the evolving nature of representations regarding levels
of abstraction and degrees of precision, the function of external
representations, and specific qualities of representation in collective design.
Designing is described at three levels: the organisation of the activity, its
strategies, and its design-representation construction activities (different
ways to generate, trans-form, and evaluate representations). Even if we adopt a
"generic design" stance, we claim that design can take different forms
depending on the nature of the artefact, and we propose some candidates for
dimensions that allow a distinction to be made between these forms of design.
We discuss the potential specificity of HCI design, and the lack of cognitive
design research occupied with the quality of design. We close our discussion of
representational structures and activities by an outline of some directions
regarding their functional linkages

The scale and magnitude of complex and pressing environmental issues lend urgency to the need for integrative and reproducible analysis and synthesis, facilitated by data-intensive research approaches. However, the recent pace of technological change has been such that appropriate skills to accomplish data-intensive research are lacking among environmental scientists, who more than ever need greater access to training and mentorship in computational skills. Here, we provide a roadmap for raising data competencies of current and next-generation environmental researchers by describing the concepts and skills needed for effectively engaging with the heterogeneous, distributed, and rapidly growing volumes of available data. We articulate five key skills: (1) data management and processing, (2) analysis, (3) software skills for science, (4) visualization, and (5) communication methods for collaboration and dissemination. We provide an overview of the current suite of training initiatives available to environmental scientists and models for closing the skill-transfer gap
Development of the Marketing Strategy of Mediahost.sk on the Czech Market
Diplomová práca sa zameriava na vývoj marketingovej stratégie firmy Mediahost.sk na slovenskom trhu. Analyzuje makro a mikro prostredie v IT priemysle, a to najmä so zameraním na webhosting. Aktuálna marketingová stratégia spoločnosti je popísaná a hlavné ovplyvňujúce faktory sú rozpoznané. Diplomová práca obsahuje návrhy zmien a odporúčania zahrnuté v novej marketingovej stratégii spoločnosti. Navyše, je navrhnutý plán a rozpočet realizácie.The diploma thesis focuses on the development of marketing strategy of company Mediahost.sk in the Czech market. Analyzes macro and micro environment in the IT industry, especially focusing on webhosting. The current marketing strategy of the company is described and main influencing factors are identified. The thesis contains proposals and recommendations included in the new marketing strategy. In addition, the proposed plan and budget are introduced.
Are Delayed Issues Harder to Resolve? Revisiting Cost-to-Fix of Defects throughout the Lifecycle
Many practitioners and academics believe in a delayed issue effect (DIE);
i.e. the longer an issue lingers in the system, the more effort it requires to
resolve. This belief is often used to justify major investments in new
development processes that promise to retire more issues sooner.
This paper tests for the delayed issue effect in 171 software projects
conducted around the world in the period from 2006--2014. To the best of our
knowledge, this is the largest study yet published on this effect. We found no
evidence for the delayed issue effect; i.e. the effort to resolve issues in a
later phase was not consistently or substantially greater than when issues were
resolved soon after their introduction.
This paper documents the above study and explores reasons for this mismatch
between this common rule of thumb and empirical data. In summary, DIE is not
some constant across all projects. Rather, DIE might be an historical relic
that occurs intermittently only in certain kinds of projects. This is a
significant result since it predicts that new development processes that
promise to faster retire more issues will not have a guaranteed return on
investment (depending on the context where applied), and that a long-held truth
