Computer-aided design for building multipurpose routing processes in discrete event simulation models
Good domain-modeling enables an appropriate separation of concerns that improves quality properties in the simulation models, such as modifiability and maintainability. In this paper, the interplay of abstraction and concreteness in advancing the theory and practice of Modelling and Simulation is improved using the Model-Driven Engineering levels for building simulation models devoted to routing processes. The definition of this type of processes is detailed as a domain-model conceived as an abstraction defined in a graph model. Such abstraction turns into a set of formal simulation models that are (later) translated into an executable implementation. The final simulation models are specified using Routed DEVS formalism. The methodological proposal is accomplished with the development of a Modelling and Simulation graphical software tool that uses the set of models (defined in terms of the Model-Driven Engineering approach) as the core of its operation. This graphical software tool is developed as a plug-in for Eclipse Integrated Development Environment with aims to take advantage of existent Modeling and Simulation software. Therefore, the usefulness of graphical modeling for supporting the development of the simulation models is empowered with a Model-Driven Engineering process. The main benefit obtained when the Model-Driven Engineering approach is used for modeling an abstraction of the final simulation model is a clear reduction of formalization and implementation times.Fil: Blas, MarĂa Julia. Model Continuity in Discrete Event Simulation: A Framework for Model-Driven Development of Simulation Models.
Most of the well known modeling and simulation methodologies state the importance of conceptual modeling in simulation studies and they suggest the use of conceptual models during the simulation model development process. However, only a limited number of methodologies refers to howto move from a conceptual model to an executable simulation model. Besides, existing modeling and simulation methodologies do not typically provide a formal method for model transformations between the models in different stages of the development process. Hence, in the current M&S practice, model continuity is usually not fulfilled. In this article, a model driven development framework for modeling and simulation is in order to bridge the gap between different stages of a simulation study and to obtain model continuity. The applicability of the framework is illustrated with a prototype modeling environment and a case study in the discrete event simulation domain
Model-based tool support for Tactical Data Links: an experience report from the defence domain
The Tactical Data Link (TDL) allows the exchange of information between cooperating platforms as part of an integrated command and control (C2) system. Information exchange is facilitated by adherence to a complex, message-based protocol defined by document-centric standards. In this paper, we report on a recent body of work investigating migration from a document-centric to a model-centric approach within the context of the TDL domain, motivated by a desire to achieve a positive return on investment. The model-centric approach makes use of the Epsilon technology stack and provides a significant improvement to both the level of abstraction and rigour of the network design. It is checkable by a machine and, by virtue of an MDA-like approach to the separation of domains and model transformation between domains, is open to integration with other models to support more complex workflows, such as by providing the results of interoperability analyses in human-readable domain-specific reports conforming to an accepted standard
A Modeling and Verification Approach to the Design of Distributed IMA Architectures Using TTEthernet
AbstractIntegrated Modular Avionics (IMA) architectures complemented with Time-Triggered Ethernet (TTEthernet) provides a strong platform to support the design and deployment of distributed avionic software systems. The complexity of the design and continuous integration of such systems can be managed using a model-based methodology. In this paper, we build on top of our extension of the AADL modeling language to model TTEthernet-based distributed systems and leverage model transformations to enable undertaking the verification of the system models produced with this methodology. In particular, we propose to transform the system models to a model suitable for a simulation with DEVS. We illustrate the proposed approach using an example of a navigation and guidance system and we use this example to show the verification of the contention-freedom property of TTEthernet schedule
An Object-Oriented Framework for Designing Reusable and Maintainable DEVS Models using Design Patterns
Design patterns are well practices to share software development experiences.
These patterns allow enhancing reusability, readability and maintainability of
architecture and code of software applications. As simulation applies
computerized models to produce traces in order to obtain results and
conclusions, designers of simulation explored design patterns to make the
simulation code more reusable, more readable and easy to maintain, in addition
to design complex software oriented simulation modeling.
In DEVS (Discrete Event System specification), the designers have
successfully designed simulations, frameworks, tools, etc. However, some issues
remain still open and should be explored like how a piece of code that
implements a set of states, events and transitions may be reused to design a
new DEVS model? How may a DEVS model be extended to a new formalism? Etc.
In this paper, we address these issues and we propose a set of patterns that
may serve as guidelines to designers of DEVS models and its extensions and may
contribute to the design of an operational simulation framework. These patterns
are inspired partly by the available designs of DEVS community and software
engineering developers
A State-of-the-art Integrated Transportation Simulation Platform
Nowadays, universities and companies have a huge need for simulation and
modelling methodologies. In the particular case of traffic and transportation,
making physical modifications to the real traffic networks could be highly
expensive, dependent on political decisions and could be highly disruptive to
the environment. However, while studying a specific domain or problem,
analysing a problem through simulation may not be trivial and may need several
simulation tools, hence raising interoperability issues. To overcome these
problems, we propose an agent-directed transportation simulation platform,
through the cloud, by means of services. We intend to use the IEEE standard HLA
(High Level Architecture) for simulators interoperability and agents for
controlling and coordination. Our motivations are to allow multiresolution
analysis of complex domains, to allow experts to collaborate on the analysis of
a common problem and to allow co-simulation and synergy of different
application domains. This paper will start by presenting some preliminary
background concepts to help better understand the scope of this work. After
that, the results of a literature review is shown. Finally, the general
architecture of a transportation simulation platform is proposed
Densifying the sparse cloud SimSaaS: The need of a synergy among agent-directed simulation, SimSaaS and HLA
Modelling & Simulation (M&S) is broadly used in real scenarios where making
physical modifications could be highly expensive. With the so-called Simulation
Software-as-a-Service (SimSaaS), researchers could take advantage of the huge
amount of resource that cloud computing provides. Even so, studying and
analysing a problem through simulation may need several simulation tools, hence
raising interoperability issues. Having this in mind, IEEE developed a standard
for interoperability among simulators named High Level Architecture (HLA).
Moreover, the multi-agent system approach has become recognised as a convenient
approach for modelling and simulating complex systems. Despite all the recent
works and acceptance of these technologies, there is still a great lack of work
regarding synergies among them. This paper shows by means of a literature
review this lack of work or, in other words, the sparse Cloud SimSaaS. The
literature review and the resulting taxonomy are the main contributions of this
paper, as they provide a research agenda illustrating future research
opportunities and trends
Introducing Simulation and Model Animation in the MDE Topcased Toolkit
International audienceThe Topcased project aims at developing a modular and generic CASE environment for model driven development of safety critical systems. Model validation is a key feature in this project and model simulation is a major way for validation. The purpose of this paper is to present the current Topcased process for building model simulators and animators. After introducing the functional requirements for model simulation and animation, it is explained how simulation is currently being integrated in the Topcased environment, presenting the main components of a simulator: a model animator, a scenario builder and a simulation engine. The approach is illustrated by the presentation of the first simulation experiment conducted in the project: the UML 2 StateMachines case study
