Location-awareness is emerging as a promising technique for future-generation wire less network to adaptively enhance and optimize its overall performance through location-enabled technologies such as location-assisted transceiver reconfiguration and routing. The availability of accurate location information of mobile users becomes the essential prerequisite for the design of such location-aware networks. Motivated by the low locationing accuracy of the Global Positioning System (GPS) in dense multipath environments, which is commonly used for acquiring location information in most of the existing wireless networks, wireless communication system-based positioning systems have been investigated as alternatives to fill the gap of the GPS in coverage. Distance-based location techniques using time-of-arrival (TOA) measurements are commonly preferred by broadband wireless communications where the arrival time of the signal component of the First Arriving Path (FAP) can be converted to the distance between the receiver and the transmitter with known location. With at least three transmitters, the location of the receiver can be determined via trilatération method. However, identification of the FAP’s signal component in dense multipath scenarios is quite challenging due to the significantly weaker power of the FAP as compared with the Later Arriving Paths (LAPs) from scattering, reflection and refraction, and the superposition of these random arrival LAPs’ signal compo nents will become large interference to detect the FAP. In this thesis, a robust FAP detection scheme based on multipath interference cancellation is proposed to im prove the accuracy of location estimation in dense multipath environments. In the proposed algorithm, the signal components of LAPs is reconstructed based on the estimated channel and data with the assist of the communication receiver, and sub sequently removed from the received signal. Accurate FAP detection results are then achieved with the cross-correlation between the interference-suppressed signal and an augmented preamble which is the combination of the original preamble for com munications and the demodulated data sequences. Therefore, more precise distance estimation (hence location estimation) can be obtained with the proposed algorithm for further reliable network optimization strategy design. On the other hand, multiceli cooperative communication is another emerging technique to substantially improve the coverage and throughput of traditional cellular networks. Location-awareness also plays an important role in the design and implementation of multiceli cooperation technique. With accurate location information of mobile users, the complexity of multiceli cooperation algorithm design can be dramatically reduced by location-assisted applications, e.g., automatic cooperative base station (BS) determination and signal synchronization. Therefore, potential latency aroused by cooperative processing will be minimized. Furthermore, the cooperative BSs require the sharing of certain information, e.g., channel state information (CSI), user data and transmission parameters to perform coordination in their signaling strategies. The BSs need to have the capabilities to exchange available information with each other to follow up with the time-varying communication environment. As most of broadband wireless communication systems are already orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based, a Multi-Layered OFDM System, which is specially tailored for multiceli cooperation is investigated to provide parallel robust, efficient and flexible signaling links for BS coordination purposes. These layers are overlaid with data-carrying OFDM signals in both time and frequency domains and therefore, no dedicated radio resources are required for multiceli cooperative networks. In the final aspect of this thesis, an enhanced channel estimation through itera tive decision-directed method is investigated for OFDM system, which aims to provide more accurate estimation results with the aid of the demodulated OFDM data. The performance of traditional training sequence-based channel estimation is often lim ited by the length of the training. To achieve acceptable estimation performance, a long sequence has to be used which dramatically reduces the transmission efficiency of data communication. In this proposed method, the restriction of the training sequence length can be removed and high channel estimation accuracy can be achieved with high transmission efficiency, and therefore it particular fits in multiceli cooperative networks. On the other hand, as the performance of the proposed FAP detection scheme also relies on the accuracy of channel estimation and data detection results, the proposed method can be combined with the FAP detection scheme to further optimize the accuracy of multipath interference cancellation and FAP detection

Analysis and design of physical-layer network coding for relay networks

Physical-layer network coding (PNC) is a technique to make use of interference in wireless transmissions to boost the system throughput. In a PNC employed relay network, the relay node directly recovers and transmits a linear combination of its received messages in the physical layer. It has been shown that PNC can achieve near information-capacity rates. PNC is a new information exchange scheme introduced in wireless transmission. In practice, transmitters and receivers need to be designed and optimized, to achieve fast and reliable information exchange. Thus, we would like to ask: How to design the PNC schemes to achieve fast and reliable information exchange? In this thesis, we address this question from the following works: Firstly, we studied channel-uncoded PNC in two-way relay fading channels with QPSK modulation. The computation error probability for computing network coded messages at the relay is derived. We then optimized the network coding functions at the relay to improve the error rate performance. We then worked on channel coded PNC. The codes we studied include classical binary code, modern codes, and lattice codes. We analyzed the distance spectra of channel-coded PNC schemes with classical binary codes, to derive upper bounds for error rates of computing network coded messages at the relay. We designed and optimized irregular repeat-accumulate coded PNC. We modified the conventional extrinsic information transfer chart in the optimization process to suit the superimposed signal received at the relay. We analyzed and designed Eisenstein integer based lattice coded PNC in multi-way relay fading channels, to derive error rate performance bounds of computing network coded messages. Finally we extended our work to multi-way relay channels. We proposed a opportunistic transmission scheme for a pair-wise transmission PNC in a single-input single-output multi-way relay channel, to improve the sum-rate at the relay. The error performance of computing network coded messages at the relay is also improved. We optimized the uplink/downlink channel usage for multi-input multi-output multi-way relay channels with PNC to maximize the degrees of freedom capacity. We also showed that the system sum-rate can be further improved by a proposed iterative optimization algorithm

Using reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) to improve the coverage and the data rate of future wireless networks is a viable option. These surfaces are constituted of a significant number of passive and nearly passive components that interact with incident signals in a smart way, such as by reflecting them, to increase the wireless system's performance as a result of which the notion of a smart radio environment comes to fruition. In this survey, a study review of RIS-assisted wireless communication is supplied starting with the principles of RIS which include the hardware architecture, the control mechanisms, and the discussions of previously held views about the channel model and pathloss; then the performance analysis considering different performance parameters, analytical approaches and metrics are presented to describe the RIS-assisted wireless network performance improvements. Despite its enormous promise, RIS confronts new hurdles in integrating into wireless networks efficiently due to its passive nature. Consequently, the channel estimation for, both full and nearly passive RIS and the RIS deployments are compared under various wireless communication models and for single and multi-users. Lastly, the challenges and potential future study areas for the RIS aided wireless communication systems are proposed

A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of PhilosophyWe are at that moment of network evolution when we have realised that our telecommunication systems should mimic features of human kind, e.g., the ability to understand the medium and take advantage of its changes. Looking towards the future, the mobile industry envisions the use of fully automatised cells able to self-organise all their parameters and procedures. A fully self-organised network is the one that is able to avoid human involvement and react to the fluctuations of network, traffic and channel through the automatic/autonomous nature of its functioning. Nowadays, the mobile community is far from this fully self-organised kind of network, but they are taken the first steps to achieve this target in the near future. This thesis hopes to contribute to the automatisation of cellular networks, providing models and tools to understand the behaviour of these networks, and algorithms and optimisation approaches to enhance their performance. This work focuses on the next generation of cellular networks, in more detail, in the DownLink (DL) of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) based networks. Within this type of cellular system, attention is paid to interference mitigation in self-organising macrocell scenarios and femtocell deployments. Moreover, this thesis investigates the interference issues that arise when these two cell types are jointly deployed, complementing each other in what is currently known as a two-tier network. This thesis also provides new practical approaches to the inter-cell interference problem in both macro cell and femtocell OFDMA systems as well as in two-tier networks by means of the design of a novel framework and the use of mathematical optimisation. Special attention is paid to the formulation of optimisation problems and the development of well-performing solving methods (accurate and fast)
