Patterns and Variation in English Language Discourse
The publication is reviewed post-conference proceedings from the international 9th Brno Conference on Linguistics Studies in English, held on 16–17 September 2021 and organised by the Faculty of Education, Masaryk University in Brno. The papers revolve around the themes of patterns and variation in specialised discourses (namely the media, academic, business, tourism, educational and learner discourses), effective interaction between the addressor and addressees and the current trends and development in specialised discourses. The principal methodological perspectives are the comparative approach involving discourses in English and another language, critical and corpus analysis, as well as identification of pragmatic strategies and appropriate rhetorical means. The authors of papers are researchers from the Czech Republic, Italy, Luxembourg, Serbia and Georgia
A Review of Deep Learning Models for Twitter Sentiment Analysis: Challenges and Opportunities
Microblogging site Twitter (re-branded to X since July 2023) is one of the most influential online social media websites, which offers a platform for the masses to communicate, expresses their opinions, and shares information on a wide range of subjects and products, resulting in the creation of a large amount of unstructured data. This has attracted significant attention from researchers who seek to understand and analyze the sentiments contained within this massive user-generated text. The task of sentiment analysis (SA) entails extracting and identifying user opinions from the text, and various lexicon-and machine learning-based methods have been developed over the years to accomplish this. However, deep learning (DL)-based approaches have recently become dominant due to their superior performance. This study briefs on standard preprocessing techniques and various word embeddings for data preparation. It then delves into a taxonomy to provide a comprehensive summary of DL-based approaches. In addition, the work compiles popular benchmark datasets and highlights evaluation metrics employed for performance measures and the resources available in the public domain to aid SA tasks. Furthermore, the survey discusses domain-specific practical applications of SA tasks. Finally, the study concludes with various research challenges and outlines future outlooks for further investigation
Comparing the production of a formula with the development of L2 competence
This pilot study investigates the production of a formula with the development of L2 competence over proficiency levels of a spoken learner corpus. The results show that the formula
in beginner production data is likely being recalled holistically from learners’ phonological
memory rather than generated online, identifiable by virtue of its fluent production in absence
of any other surface structure evidence of the formula’s syntactic properties. As learners’ L2
competence increases, the formula becomes sensitive to modifications which show structural
conformity at each proficiency level. The transparency between the formula’s modification
and learners’ corresponding L2 surface structure realisations suggest that it is the independent
development of L2 competence which integrates the formula into compositional language,
and ultimately drives the SLA process forward
Computer Vision and Architectural History at Eye Level:Mixed Methods for Linking Research in the Humanities and in Information Technology
Information on the history of architecture is embedded in our daily surroundings, in vernacular and heritage buildings and in physical objects, photographs and plans. Historians study these tangible and intangible artefacts and the communities that built and used them. Thus valuableinsights are gained into the past and the present as they also provide a foundation for designing the future. Given that our understanding of the past is limited by the inadequate availability of data, the article demonstrates that advanced computer tools can help gain more and well-linked data from the past. Computer vision can make a decisive contribution to the identification of image content in historical photographs. This application is particularly interesting for architectural history, where visual sources play an essential role in understanding the built environment of the past, yet lack of reliable metadata often hinders the use of materials. The automated recognition contributes to making a variety of image sources usable forresearch.<br/
A Tale of Two Approaches: Comparing Top-Down and Bottom-Up Strategies for Analyzing and Visualizing High-Dimensional Data
The proliferation of high-throughput and sensory technologies in various fields has led to a considerable increase in data volume, complexity, and diversity. Traditional data storage, analysis, and visualization methods are struggling to keep pace with the growth of modern data sets, necessitating innovative approaches to overcome the challenges of managing, analyzing, and visualizing data across various disciplines.
One such approach is utilizing novel storage media, such as deoxyribonucleic acid~(DNA), which presents efficient, stable, compact, and energy-saving storage option. Researchers are exploring the potential use of DNA as a storage medium for long-term storage of significant cultural and scientific materials.
In addition to novel storage media, scientists are also focussing on developing new techniques that can integrate multiple data modalities and leverage machine learning algorithms to identify complex relationships and patterns in vast data sets. These newly-developed data management and analysis approaches have the potential to unlock previously unknown insights into various phenomena and to facilitate more effective translation of basic research findings to practical and clinical applications.
Addressing these challenges necessitates different problem-solving approaches. Researchers are developing novel tools and techniques that require different viewpoints. Top-down and bottom-up approaches are essential techniques that offer valuable perspectives for managing, analyzing, and visualizing complex high-dimensional multi-modal data sets. This cumulative dissertation explores the challenges associated with handling such data and highlights top-down, bottom-up, and integrated approaches that are being developed to manage, analyze, and visualize this data. The work is conceptualized in two parts, each reflecting the two problem-solving approaches and their uses in published studies. The proposed work showcases the importance of understanding both approaches, the steps of reasoning about the problem within them, and their concretization and application in various domains
Language variation, automatic speech recognition and algorithmic bias
In this thesis, I situate the impacts of automatic speech recognition systems in relation to sociolinguistic theory (in particular drawing on concepts of language variation, language ideology
and language policy) and contemporary debates in AI ethics (especially regarding algorithmic
bias and fairness). In recent years, automatic speech recognition systems, alongside other
language technologies, have been adopted by a growing number of users and have been embedded in an increasing number of algorithmic systems. This expansion into new application
domains and language varieties can be understood as an expansion into new sociolinguistic
contexts. In this thesis, I am interested in how automatic speech recognition tools interact
with this sociolinguistic context, and how they affect speakers, speech communities and their
language varieties.
Focussing on commercial automatic speech recognition systems for British Englishes, I first
explore the extent and consequences of performance differences of these systems for different user groups depending on their linguistic background. When situating this predictive bias
within the wider sociolinguistic context, it becomes apparent that these systems reproduce and
potentially entrench existing linguistic discrimination and could therefore cause direct and indirect harms to already marginalised speaker groups. To understand the benefits and potentials
of automatic transcription tools, I highlight two case studies: transcribing sociolinguistic data
in English and transcribing personal voice messages in isiXhosa. The central role of the sociolinguistic context in developing these tools is emphasised in this comparison. Design choices,
such as the choice of training data, are particularly consequential because they interact with existing processes of language standardisation. To understand the impacts of these choices, and
the role of the developers making them better, I draw on theory from language policy research
and critical data studies. These conceptual frameworks are intended to help practitioners and
researchers in anticipating and mitigating predictive bias and other potential harms of speech
technologies. Beyond looking at individual choices, I also investigate the discourses about language variation and linguistic diversity deployed in the context of language technologies. These
discourses put forward by researchers, developers and commercial providers not only have a
direct effect on the wider sociolinguistic context, but they also highlight how this context (e.g.,
existing beliefs about language(s)) affects technology development. Finally, I explore ways of
building better automatic speech recognition tools, focussing in particular on well-documented,
naturalistic and diverse benchmark datasets. However, inclusive datasets are not necessarily
a panacea, as they still raise important questions about the nature of linguistic data and language variation (especially in relation to identity), and may not mitigate or prevent all potential
harms of automatic speech recognition systems as embedded in larger algorithmic systems
and sociolinguistic contexts
Machine Learning Algorithm for the Scansion of Old Saxon Poetry
Several scholars designed tools to perform the automatic scansion of poetry in many languages, but none of these tools
deal with Old Saxon or Old English. This project aims to be a first attempt to create a tool for these languages. We
implemented a Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM) model to perform the automatic scansion of Old Saxon
and Old English poems. Since this model uses supervised learning, we manually annotated the Heliand manuscript, and
we used the resulting corpus as labeled dataset to train the model. The evaluation of the performance of the algorithm
reached a 97% for the accuracy and a 99% of weighted average for precision, recall and F1 Score. In addition, we tested
the model with some verses from the Old Saxon Genesis and some from The Battle of Brunanburh, and we observed that
the model predicted almost all Old Saxon metrical patterns correctly misclassified the majority of the Old English input
verses
Exploring Sentiment Analysis on Twitter: Investigating Public Opinion on Migration in Brazil from 2015 to 2020
openTechnology has reshaped societal interaction and the expression of opinions. Migration is a prominent trend, and analysing social media discussions provides insights into societal perspectives. This thesis explores how events between 2015 and 2020 impacted Brazilian sentiment on Twitter about migrants and refugees. Its aim was to uncover the influence of key sociopolitical events on public sentiment, clarifying how these echoed in the digital realm. Four key objectives guided this research: (a) understanding public opinions on migrants and refugees, (b) investigating how events influenced Twitter sentiment, (c) identifying terms used in migration-related tweets, and (d) tracking sentiment shifts, especially concerning changes in government. Sentiment analysis using VADER (Valence Aware Dictionary and sEntiment Reasoner) was employed to analyse tweet data. The use of computational methods in social sciences is gaining traction, yet no analysis has been conducted before to understand the sentiments of the Brazilian population regarding migration. The analysis underscored Twitter's role in reflecting and shaping public discourse, offering insights into how major events influenced discussions on migration. In conclusion, this study illuminated the landscape of Brazilian sentiment on migration, emphasizing the significance of innovative social media analysis methodologies for policymaking and societal inclusivity in the digital age
Managing healthcare transformation towards P5 medicine (Published in Frontiers in Medicine)
Health and social care systems around the world are facing radical organizational, methodological and technological paradigm changes to meet the requirements for improving quality and safety of care as well as efficiency and efficacy of care processes. In this they’re trying to manage the challenges of ongoing demographic changes towards aging, multi-diseased societies, development of human resources, a health and social services consumerism, medical and biomedical progress, and exploding costs for health-related R&D as well as health services delivery. Furthermore, they intend to achieve sustainability of global health systems by transforming them towards intelligent, adaptive and proactive systems focusing on health and wellness with optimized quality and safety outcomes.
The outcome is a transformed health and wellness ecosystem combining the approaches of translational medicine, 5P medicine (personalized, preventive, predictive, participative precision medicine) and digital health towards ubiquitous personalized health services realized independent of time and location. It considers individual health status, conditions, genetic and genomic dispositions in personal social, occupational, environmental and behavioural context, thus turning health and social care from reactive to proactive. This requires the advancement communication and cooperation among the business actors from different domains (disciplines) with different methodologies, terminologies/ontologies, education, skills and experiences from data level (data sharing) to concept/knowledge level (knowledge sharing). The challenge here is the understanding and the formal as well as consistent representation of the world of sciences and practices, i.e. of multidisciplinary and dynamic systems in variable context, for enabling mapping between the different disciplines, methodologies, perspectives, intentions, languages, etc. Based on a framework for dynamically, use-case-specifically and context aware representing multi-domain ecosystems including their development process, systems, models and artefacts can be consistently represented, harmonized and integrated. The response to that problem is the formal representation of health and social care ecosystems through an system-oriented, architecture-centric, ontology-based and policy-driven model and framework, addressing all domains and development process views contributing to the system and context in question.
Accordingly, this Research Topic would like to address this change towards 5P medicine. Specifically, areas of interest include, but are not limited:
