    Simulation of Electric Vehicles Combining Structural and Functional Approaches

    In this paper the construction of a model that represents the behavior of an Electric Vehicle is described. Both the mechanical and the electric traction systems are represented using Multi-Bond Graph structural approach suited to model large scale physical systems. Then the model of the controllers, represented with a functional approach, is included giving rise to an integrated model which exploits the advantages of both approaches.     Power-Integrated Circuit Active Leakage Current Detector

    Most of the failures of induction motors become insulation faults, causing a permanent damage. Using differential current transformers, a system capable of insulation fault detection was developed, based on the differential relay protection scheme. Both signal injection and fault detection circuitry were integrated in a single chip. The proposed scheme is faster than other existing protection and not restricted to protect induction motors, but several other devices (such as IGBTs) and systems. This paper explains the principle of operation of fault protection scheme and analyzes an integrated implementation through simulations and experimental results.     Voice Conversion Using K-Histograms and Residual Averaging

    The main goal of a voice conversion system is to modify the voice of a source speaker, in order to be perceived as if it had been uttered by another specific speaker.   Many approaches found in the literature convert only the features related to the vocal tract of the speaker. Our proposal is to convert those characteristics of the vocal tract, and also to process the signal passing through the vocal chords.     Determination of the adjoint state evolution for the efficient operation of a hybrid electric vehicle

    To minimize the fuel consumption in hybrid electric vehicles, it is necessary to define a strategy for the management of the power flows within the vehicle. Under the assumption that the velocity to be developed by the vehicle is known a priori, this problem may be posed as a nonlinear optimal control problem with control and state constraints. We find the solution to this problem using the optimality conditions given by the Pontryagin Maximum Principle. This leads to boundary value problems that we solve using a software tool named PASVA4. On real time operation, the velocity to be developed by the vehicle is not known in advance. We show how the adjoint state obtained from the former problem may be used as a weighing factor, called ‘‘equivalent consumption’’.     Alternative Admissible Biased Estimators

    In this work, a biased estimator obtained from an affine transformation of an unbiased estimator will be analyzed. In particular, the method proposed by Y. C. Eldar will be studied, and alternative approaches will be developed for the construction of biased estimators through transformations of unbiased ones.     In this paper we discuss æsthetic issues of sonifications. We posit that many sonifications have suffered from poor acoustic ecology which makes listening more difficult, thereby resulting in poorer data extraction and inference on the part of the listener. Lessons are drawn from the electro acoustic music community as we argue that it is not instructive to distinguish between sonifications and music/sound art. Edgar Var`ese defined music as organised sound and sonifications organise sound to reflect some aspect of the thing being sonified. Therefore, we propose that sonification designers can improve the communicative ability of their auditory displays by paying attention to the æsthetic issues that are well known to composers, orchestrators, sound designers & artists, and recording engineers
