    Change Sensor Topology When Needed: How to Efficiently Use System Resources in Control and Estimation Over Wireless Networks

    New control paradigms are needed for large networks of wireless sensors and actuators in order to efficiently utilize system resources. In this paper we consider when feedback control loops are formed locally to detect, monitor, and counteract disturbances that hit a plant at random instances in time and space. A sensor node that detects a disturbance dynamically forms a local multi-hop tree of sensors and fuse the data into a state estimate. It is shown that the optimal estimator over a sensor tree is given by a Kalman filter of certain structure. The tree is optimized such that the overall transmission energy is minimized but guarantees a specified level of estimation accuracy. A sensor network reconfiguration algorithm is presented that leads to a suboptimal solution and has low computational complexity. A linear control law based on the state estimate is applied and it is argued that it leads to a closed-loop control system that minimizes a quadratic cost function.     Distributed solutions for signal processing techniques are important for establishing large-scale monitoring and control applications. They enable the deployment of scalable sensor networks for particular application areas. Typically, such networks consists of a large number of vulnerable components connected via unreliable communication links and are sometimes deployed in harsh environment. Therefore, dependability of sensor network is a challenging problem. An efficient and cost effective answer to this challenge is provided by employing runtime reconfiguration techniques that assure the integrity of the desired signal processing functionalities. Runtime reconfigurability has thorough impact both on system design, implementation, testing/validation and deployment. The presented research focuses on the widespreaded signal processing method known as state estimation with Kalman filtering in particular. To that extent, a number of distributed state estimation solutions that are suitable for networked systems in general are overviewed, after which robustness of the system is improved according to various runtime reconfiguration techniques

    Optimal scheduling for refueling multiple autonomous aerial vehicles

    The scheduling, for autonomous refueling, of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is posed as a combinatorial optimization problem. An efficient dynamic programming (DP) algorithm is introduced for finding the optimal initial refueling sequence. The optimal sequence needs to be recalculated when conditions change, such as when UAVs join or leave the queue unexpectedly. We develop a systematic shuffle scheme to reconfigure the UAV sequence using the least amount of shuffle steps. A similarity metric over UAV sequences is introduced to quantify the reconfiguration effort which is treated as an additional cost and is integrated into the DP algorithm. Feasibility and limitations of this novel approach are also discussed

    Review of selection criteria for sensor and actuator configurations suitable for internal combustion engines

    This literature review considers the problem of finding a suitable configuration of sensors and actuators for the control of an internal combustion engine. It takes a look at the methods, algorithms, processes, metrics, applications, research groups and patents relevant for this topic. Several formal metric have been proposed, but practical use remains limited. Maximal information criteria are theoretically optimal for selecting sensors, but hard to apply to a system as complex and nonlinear as an engine. Thus, we reviewed methods applied to neighboring fields including nonlinear systems and non-minimal phase systems. Furthermore, the closed loop nature of control means that information is not the only consideration, and speed, stability and robustness have to be considered. The optimal use of sensor information also requires the use of models, observers, state estimators or virtual sensors, and practical acceptance of these remains limited. Simple control metrics such as conditioning number are popular, mostly because they need fewer assumptions than closed-loop metrics, which require a full plant, disturbance and goal model. Overall, no clear consensus can be found on the choice of metrics to define optimal control configurations, with physical measures, linear algebra metrics and modern control metrics all being used. Genetic algorithms and multi-criterial optimisation were identified as the most widely used methods for optimal sensor selection, although addressing the dimensionality and complexity of formulating the problem remains a challenge. This review does present a number of different successful approaches for specific applications domains, some of which may be applicable to diesel engines and other automotive applications. For a thorough treatment, non-linear dynamics and uncertainties need to be considered together, which requires sophisticated (non-Gaussian) stochastic models to establish the value of a control architecture
