    Improving Web user experience with document activity sparklines

    The temporal dimension of the web has been mostly ignoredwhen designing user interfaces for both searching and document browsing.The dynamic nature of the web is invisible to the typical user despitethe fact that most web documents and sites change at a very rapid pace.In this paper we present and describe visual extensions applied to bothindividual web sites and search engines, that capture content activityover time. This idea is implemented with a prototype that processespublicly available web feeds to generate activity profiles and enhancesselected web sites using sparklines. These proposals bring a temporalperspective to the users browsing experience

    Design and evaluation of improvement method on the Web information navigation - a stochastic search approach

    With the advent of fast growing Internet and World Wide Web (WWW), more and more companies start the electronic commerce to enhance the business competitiveness. On the other hand, more and more people surf on the Web for information gathering/processing. Due to unbalanced traffic and poorly organized information, users suffer the slow communication and disordered information organization. The information provider can analyze the traffic and uniform resource locator (URL) counters to adjust the organization; however, heterogeneous navigation patterns and dynamic fluctuating Web traffic make the tuning process very complicated. Alternatively the user may be provided with guidance to navigate through the Web pages efficiently. In this paper, a Web site was modeled as a Markov chain associated with the corresponding dynamic traffic and designated information pages. We consider four models: inexperienced surfers on guidance-less sites, experienced surfers on guidance-less sites, sites with the mean-length guidance, and sites with the known-first-arc guidance (generalized as sites with dynamic stochastic shortest path guidance). Simulation is conducted to evaluate the performance of the different types of navigation guidance. We also propose a reformulation policy to highlight the hyperlinks as steering guidance. The evolution on complexity and applicability is also discussed for the design guideline of general improvement methods.     Semantic modelling of user interests based on cross-folksonomy analysis

    The continued increase in Web usage, in particular participation in folksonomies, reveals a trend towards a more dynamic and interactive Web where individuals can organise and share resources. Tagging has emerged as the de-facto standard for the organisation of such resources, providing a versatile and reactive knowledge management mechanism that users find easy to use and understand. It is common nowadays for users to have multiple profiles in various folksonomies, thus distributing their tagging activities. In this paper, we present a method for the automatic consolidation of user profiles across two popular social networking sites, and subsequent semantic modelling of their interests utilising Wikipedia as a multi-domain model. We evaluate how much can be learned from such sites, and in which domains the knowledge acquired is focussed.     This paper describes source code independent reverse engineering of dynamic web sites. The tool Revangie builds a form-oriented analysis model solely from the usage of a web application. The recovered models can be, for example, exploited for the purpose of requirements engineering and load test development. Revangie can explore a given web application fully automatically or can passively record its usages. The collected data, i.e., data about screens, server-side programs, and system responsiveness, are analyzed in order to build a user interface model.     Web sites are dynamic, static, and most of the time a combination of both. Web sites need protection in their database to assure security. An SQL injection attacks interactive web applications that provide database services. These applications take user inputs and use them to create an SQL query at run time. In an SQL injection attack, an attacker might insert a malicious SQL query as input to perform an unauthorized database operation. Using SQL injection attacks, an attacker can retrieve or modify confidential and sensitive information from the database. It may jeopardize the confidentiality and security of Web sites which totally depends on databases. This report presents a ā€œcode reengineeringā€ that implicitly protects the applications which are written in PHP from SQL injection attacks. It uses an original approach that combines static as well as dynamic analysis.     mSpace meets EPrints: a Case Study in Creating Dynamic Digital Collections

    In this case study we look at issues involved in (a) generating dynamic digital libraries that are on a particular topic but span heterogeneous collections at distinct sites, (b) supplementing the artefacts in that collection with additional information available either from databases at the artefact's home or from the Web at large, and (c) providing an interaction paradigm that will support effective exploration of this new resource. We describe how we used two available frameworks, mSpace and EPrints to support this kind of collection building. The result of the study is a set of recommendations to improve the connectivity of remote resources both to one another and to related Web resources, and that will also reduce problems like co-referencing in order to enable the creation of new collections on demand

    Increasingly, academic teachers are designing their own web sites to add value to or replace other forms of university teaching. These web sites are tangible and dynamic constructions that represent the teachers thinking and decisions derived from an implicit belief system about teaching and learning. The emphasis of this study is to explore the potential of the research techniques of concept-mapping and stimulated recall to locate the implicit pedagogies of academic teachers and investigate how they are enacted through the learning designs of their web sites. The rationale behind such an investigation is that once these implicit belief systems are made visible, then conversations can commence about how these beliefs are transformed into practice, providing a potent departure point for academic development
