    Achieving reliable and enhanced communication in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs)

    A thesis submitted to the University of Bedfordshire in partial fulfilment of the requirement for the degree of Doctor of PhilosophyWith the envisioned age of Internet of Things (IoTs), different aspects of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) will be linked so as to advance road transportation safety, ease congestion of road traffic, lessen air pollution, improve passenger transportation comfort and significantly reduce road accidents. In vehicular networks, regular exchange of current position, direction, speed, etc., enable mobile vehicle to foresee an imminent vehicle accident and notify the driver early enough in order to take appropriate action(s) or the vehicle on its own may take adequate preventive measures to avert the looming accident. Actualizing this concept requires use of shared media access protocol that is capable of guaranteeing reliable and timely broadcast of safety messages. This dissertation investigates the use of Network Coding (NC) techniques to enrich the content of each transmission and ensure improved high reliability of the broadcasted safety messages with less number of retransmissions. A Code Aided Retransmission-based Error Recovery (CARER) protocol is proposed. In order to avoid broadcast storm problem, a rebroadcasting vehicle selection metric η, is developed, which is used to select a vehicle that will rebroadcast the received encoded message. Although the proposed CARER protocol demonstrates an impressive performance, the level of incurred overhead is fairly high due to the use of complex rebroadcasting vehicle selection metric. To resolve this issue, a Random Network Coding (RNC) and vehicle clustering based vehicular communication scheme with low algorithmic complexity, named Reliable and Enhanced Cooperative Cross-layer MAC (RECMAC) scheme, is proposed. The use of this clustering technique enables RECMAC to subdivide the vehicular network into small manageable, coordinated clusters which further improve transmission reliability and minimise negative impact of network overhead. Similarly, a Cluster Head (CH) selection metric ℱ(\u1d457) is designed, which is used to determine and select the most suitably qualified candidate to become the CH of a particular cluster. Finally, in order to investigate the impact of available radio spectral resource, an in-depth study of the required amount of spectrum sufficient to support high transmission reliability and minimum latency requirements of critical road safety messages in vehicular networks was carried out. The performance of the proposed schemes was clearly shown with detailed theoretical analysis and was further validated with simulation experiments

    Cross layer optimization in 4G Wireless mesh networks

    Wireless networks have been rapidly evolving over the past two decades. It is foreseen that Fourth generation (4G) wireless systems will involve the integration of wireless mesh networks and the 3G wireless systems such as WCDMA. Moreover their wireless mesh routers will provide service to wireless local networks (WLANs) and possibly incorporate MIMO system and smart admission control policies among others. This integration will not only help the service providers cost effectiveness and users connectivities but will also improve and guarantee the QoS criteria. On the other hand, cross layer design has emerged as a new and major thrust in improving the quality of service (QoS) of wireless networks. Cross layer design involves the interaction of various layers of the network hierarchy which could further improve the QoS of the 4G integrated networks. In this work we seek new techniques for improving the overall QoS of integrated 4G systems. Towards this objective we start with the local low tier WLAN access. We then investigate CDMA alternatives to the TDMA access for wireless mesh networks. Cross layer design in wireless mesh networks is then pursued. In the first phase of this thesis a new access mechanism for WLANs is developed, in which users use an optimum transmission probability obtained by estimating the number of stations from the traffic conditions in a sliding window fashion, thereby increasing the throughput compared to the standard DCF and RTS/CTS mechanism while maintaining the same fairness and the delay performance. In the second phase we introduce a code division multiple access/Time division duplex technique CDMA/TDD for wireless mesh networks, we outline the transmitter and receiver for the relay nodes and evaluate the efficiency, delay and delay jitter performances. This CDMA based technique is more amenable to integrating the two systems (Mesh networks and WCDMA or CDMA 2000 of3G). We compare these results with the TDMA operation and through analysis we prove that the CDMA system outperforms the TDMA counterparts. In the third phase we proceed to an instance of cross layer optimized networks, where we develop an overall optimization routine that finds simultaneously the best route and the best capacity allocation to various nodes. This optimization routine minimizes the average end to end packet delay over all calls subject to various contraints. In the process we use a new adaptive version of Spatial TDMA as a platform for comparison purposes of the MAC techniques involved in the cross layer design. In this phase we also combine CDMA/TDD and optimum routing for cross layer design in wireless mesh networks. We compare the results of the CDMA/TDD system with results obtained from the STDMA system. In our analysis we consider the parallel transmissions of mesh nodes in a mesh topology. These parallel transmissions will increase the capacity resulting in a higher throughput with a lower delay. This will allow the service providers to accommodate more users in their system which will obviously reduce the colt and the end users will enjoy a better service paying a lower amount

    Data Collection in Two-Tier IoT Networks with Radio Frequency (RF) Energy Harvesting Devices and Tags

    The Internet of things (IoT) is expected to connect physical objects and end-users using technologies such as wireless sensor networks and radio frequency identification (RFID). In addition, it will employ a wireless multi-hop backhaul to transfer data collected by a myriad of devices to users or applications such as digital twins operating in a Metaverse. A critical issue is that the number of packets collected and transferred to the Internet is bounded by limited network resources such as bandwidth and energy. In this respect, IoT networks have adopted technologies such as time division multiple access (TDMA), signal interference cancellation (SIC) and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) in order to increase network capacity. Another fundamental issue is energy. To this end, researchers have exploited radio frequency (RF) energy-harvesting technologies to prolong the lifetime of energy constrained sensors and smart devices. Specifically, devices with RF energy harvesting capabilities can rely on ambient RF sources such as access points, television towers, and base stations. Further, an operator may deploy dedicated power beacons that serve as RF-energy sources. Apart from that, in order to reduce energy consumption, devices can adopt ambient backscattering communication technologies. Advantageously, backscattering allows devices to communicate using negligible amount of energy by modulating ambient RF signals. To address the aforementioned issues, this thesis first considers data collection in a two-tier MIMO ambient RF energy-harvesting network. The first tier consists of routers with MIMO capability and a set of source-destination pairs/flows. The second tier consists of energy harvesting devices that rely on RF transmissions from routers for energy supply. The problem is to determine a minimum-length TDMA link schedule that satisfies the traffic demand of source-destination pairs and energy demand of energy harvesting devices. It formulates the problem as a linear program (LP), and outlines a heuristic to construct transmission sets that are then used by the said LP. In addition, it outlines a new routing metric that considers the energy demand of energy harvesting devices to cope with routing requirements of IoT networks. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm on average achieves 31.25% shorter schedules as compared to competing schemes. In addition, the said routing metric results in link schedules that are at most 24.75% longer than those computed by the LP

    Studies on efficient spectrum sharing in coexisting wireless networks.

    Wireless communication is facing serious challenges worldwide: the severe spectrum shortage along with the explosive increase of the wireless communication demands. Moreover, different communication networks may coexist in the same geographical area. By allowing multiple communication networks cooperatively or opportunistically sharing the same frequency will potentially enhance the spectrum efficiency. This dissertation aims to investigate important spectrum sharing schemes for coexisting networks. For coexisting networks operating in interweave cognitive radio mode, most existing works focus on the secondary network’s spectrum sensing and accessing schemes. However, the primary network can be selfish and tends to use up all the frequency resource. In this dissertation, a novel optimization scheme is proposed to let primary network maximally release unnecessary frequency resource for secondary networks. The optimization problems are formulated for both uplink and downlink orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA)-based primary networks, and near optimal algorithms are proposed as well. For coexisting networks in the underlay cognitive radio mode, this work focuses on the resource allocation in distributed secondary networks as long as the primary network’s rate constraint can be met. Global optimal multicarrier discrete distributed (MCDD) algorithm and suboptimal Gibbs sampler based Lagrangian algorithm (GSLA) are proposed to solve the problem distributively. Regarding to the dirty paper coding (DPC)-based system where multiple networks share the common transmitter, this dissertation focuses on its fundamental performance analysis from information theoretic point of view. Time division multiple access (TDMA) as an orthogonal frequency sharing scheme is also investigated for comparison purpose. Specifically, the delay sensitive quality of service (QoS) requirements are incorporated by considering effective capacity in fast fading and outage capacity in slow fading. The performance metrics in low signal to noise ratio (SNR) regime and high SNR regime are obtained in closed forms followed by the detailed performance analysis

    Cross-layer schemes for performance optimization in wireless networks

    Wireless networks are undergoing rapid progress and inspiring numerous applications. As the application of wireless networks becomes broader, they are expected to not only provide ubiquitous connectivity, but also support end users with certain service guarantees. End-to-end delay is an important Quality of Service (QoS) metric in multihop wireless networks. This dissertation addresses how to minimize end-to-end delay through joint optimization of network layer routing and link layer scheduling. Two cross-layer schemes, a loosely coupled cross-layer scheme and a tightly coupled cross-layer scheme, are proposed. The two cross-layer schemes involve interference modeling in multihop wireless networks with omnidirectional antenna. In addition, based on the interference model, multicast schedules are optimized to minimize the total end-to-end delay. Throughput is another important QoS metric in wireless networks. This dissertation addresses how to leverage the spatial multiplexing function of MIMO links to improve wireless network throughput. Wireless interference modeling of a half-duplex MIMO node is presented. Based on the interference model, routing, spatial multiplexing, and scheduling are jointly considered in one optimization model. The throughput optimization problem is first addressed in constant bit rate networks and then in variable bit rate networks. In a variable data rate network, transmitters can use adaptive coding and modulation schemes to change their data rates so that the data rates are supported by the Signal to Noise and Interference Ratio (SINR).     Over the years, consumer requirements for Quality of Service (QoS) has been growing exponentially. Recently, the ratification process of newly IEEE 802.11ad amendment to IEEE 802.11 was finished. The IEEE 802.11ad is the newly con-sumer wireless communication approach, which will gain high spot on the 5G evolution. Major players in wireless market, such as Qualcomm already are inte-grating solutions from unlicensed band, like IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11ad into their architecture of LTE PRO (the next evolutionary step for 5G networking) (Qualcomm 2013; Parker et al. 2015). As the demand is growing both in enter-prise wireless networking and home consumer markets. Consumers started to no-tice the performance degradation due to overcrowded unlicensed bands. The un-licensed bands such as 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz are widely used for up-to-date IEEE 802.11n/ac technologies with upcoming IEEE 802.11ax. However, overusage of the available frequency leads to severe interference issue and consequences in to-tal system performance degradation, currently existing wireless medium access method can not sustain the increasing intereference and thus wireless needs a new methods of wireless medium access. The main focal point of this dissertation is to improve wireless performance in dense wireless networks. In dissertation both the conceptual and multi-band wireless medium access methods are considered both from theoretical point of view and experimental usage. The introduction chapter presents the investigated problem and it’s objects of research as well as importance of dissertation and it’s scientific novelty in the unlicensed wireless field. Chapter 1 revises used literature. Existing and up-to-date state-of-the-art so-lution are reviewed, evaluated and key point advantages and disadvantages are analyzed. Conclusions are drawn at the end of the chapter. Chapter 2 describes theoretical analysis of wireless medium access protocols and the new wireless medium access method. During analysis theoretical simula-tions are performed. Conclusions are drawn at the end of the chapter. Chapter 3 is focused on the experimental components evaluation for multi-band system, which would be in line with theoretical concept investigations. The experimental results, showed that components of multi-band system can gain sig-nificant performance increase when compared to the existing IEEE 802.11n/ac wireless systems. General conclusions are drawn after analysis of measurement results

    Enabling Millimeter Wave Communication for 5G Cellular Networks: MAC-layer Perspective

    Data traffic among mobile devices increases dramatically with emerging high-speed multimedia applications such as uncompressed video streaming. Many new applications beyond personal communications involve tens or even hundreds of billions wireless devices, such as wireless watch, e-health sensors, and wireless glass. The number of wireless devices and the data rates will continue to grow exponentially. Quantitative evidences forecast that total data rate by 2020 will be 1000 times of current 4G data rate. Next generation wireless networks need fundamental changes to satisfy the overwhelming capacity demands. Millimeter wave (mmWave) communication with huge available bandwidth is a very promising solution for next generation wireless networks to overcome the global bandwidth shortage at saturated microwave spectrum. The large available bandwidth can be directly translated into high capacity. mmWave communication has several propagation characteristics including strong pathloss, atmospheric and rain absorption, low diffraction around obstacles and penetration through objects. These propagation characteristics create challenges for next generation wireless networks to support various kinds of emerging applications with different QoS requirements. Our research focuses on how to effectively and efficiently exploit the large available mmWave bandwidth to achieve high capacity demand while overcoming these challenges on QoS provisioning for various kinds of applications. This thesis focuses on MAC protocol design and analysis for mmWave communication to provide required capacity and QoS to support various kinds of applications in next generation wireless networks. Specifically, from the transmitter/receiver perspective, multi-user beamforming based on codebook is conducted to determine best transmission/reception beams to increase network capacity considering the mutual interferences among concurrent links. From the channel perspective, both interfering and non-interfering concurrent links are scheduled to operate simultaneously to exploit spatial reuse and improve network capacity. Link outage problem resulting from the limited diffraction capability and low penetration capability of mmWave band is addressed for quality provisioning by enabling multi-hop transmission to replace the link in outage (for low-mobility scenarios) and buffer design with dynamic bandwidth allocation among all the users in the whole coverage area (for high-mobility scenarios). From the system perspective, system structure, network architecture, and candidate MAC are investigated and novel backoff mechanism for CSMA/CA is proposed to give more transmission opportunity to faraway nodes than nearby nodes in order to achieve better fairness and higher network capacity. In this thesis, we formulate each problem mentioned above as an optimization problem with the proposed algorithms to solve it. Extensive analytical and simulation results are provided to demonstrate the performance of the proposed algorithms in several aspects, such as network capacity, energy efficiency, link connectivity and so on
