    Simultaneous localization and mapping for inspection robots in water and sewer pipe networks: a review

    At the present time, water and sewer pipe networks are predominantly inspected manually. In the near future, smart cities will perform intelligent autonomous monitoring of buried pipe networks, using teams of small robots. These robots, equipped with all necessary computational facilities and sensors (optical, acoustic, inertial, thermal, pressure and others) will be able to inspect pipes whilst navigating, selflocalising and communicating information about the pipe condition and faults such as leaks or blockages to human operators for monitoring and decision support. The predominantly manual inspection of pipe networks will be replaced with teams of autonomous inspection robots that can operate for long periods of time over a large spatial scale. Reliable autonomous navigation and reporting of faults at this scale requires effective localization and mapping, which is the estimation of the robot’s position and its surrounding environment. This survey presents an overview of state-of-the-art works on robot simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) with a focus on water and sewer pipe networks. It considers various aspects of the SLAM problem in pipes, from the motivation, to the water industry requirements, modern SLAM methods, map-types and sensors suited to pipes. Future challenges such as robustness for long term robot operation in pipes are discussed, including how making use of prior knowledge, e.g. geographic information systems (GIS) can be used to build map estimates, and improve the multi-robot SLAM in the pipe environmen

    Position and orientation correction for pipe profiling robots

    Sewer pipelines are prevalent, important, valuable, unnoticed, and often in a state of disrepair. Pipeline inspection is essential for effective management of wastewater systems and is now mandated for many municipalities complying with the Governmental Accounting Standards Board Statement 34 and EPA regulations. Pipe inspection robots are routinely used to inspect underground pipelines for cracks, deformations, leaks, blockages and other anomalies to prevent catastrophic failure and to ensure cost effective maintenance and renewal. Most existing pipe inspection robots only collect video footage of pipe condition. Pipe profiling technology has recently been introduced to allow for measurement of the internal coordinate geometry of pipelines. Accurate radial measurements permit the calculation of several important pipe parameters which aid in the determination of pipe condition and prediction of time to failure. Significant research work has been completed in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia aimed at improving the accuracy and automation of the pipe inspection process. However, standard calibration, verification, reporting and analysis practices must be developed for pipe profilers if coordinate profiling data is to be effectively included in the long term management of pipeline assets. The objective of this research is to quantify the measurement error incurred by a pipe profiler\u27s misalignment with the pipe axis, present a new methodology to correct the measurement error, develop a prototype profiler to verify the equations derived herein, and to further the development of pipe profiler technology at the Trenchless Technology Center at Louisiana Tech University. Equations are derived for pipe ovality as a function of the robot\u27s position and orientation with respect to a pipe to demonstrate the magnitude of the error which is introduced by a robot\u27s misalignment with the pipe axis. A new technique is presented to estimate the position and orientation of a profiler using radial measurement devices at each of its ends. This technique is demonstrated by applying homogeneous coordinate transformations to simulated radial measurements based on mathematically generated data that would be obtained by incrementally rotating two parallel radial measuring devices in a perfectly cylindrical pipe. A prototype pipe profiling robot was developed to demonstrate the new position and orientation technique and to experimentally verify the measurement error caused by a robot\u27s misalignment with the pipe axis. This work improves the accuracy and automation of pipe profiling technology and makes a case for the development of industry standard calibration, verification, reporting and analysis practices

    Safe navigation and motion coordination control strategies for unmanned aerial vehicles

    Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have become very popular for many military and civilian applications including in agriculture, construction, mining, environmental monitoring, etc. A desirable feature for UAVs is the ability to navigate and perform tasks autonomously with least human interaction. This is a very challenging problem due to several factors such as the high complexity of UAV applications, operation in harsh environments, limited payload and onboard computing power and highly nonlinear dynamics. Therefore, more research is still needed towards developing advanced reliable control strategies for UAVs to enable safe navigation in unknown and dynamic environments. This problem is even more challenging for multi-UAV systems where it is more efficient to utilize information shared among the networked vehicles. Therefore, the work presented in this thesis contributes towards the state-of-the-art in UAV control for safe autonomous navigation and motion coordination of multi-UAV systems. The first part of this thesis deals with single-UAV systems. Initially, a hybrid navigation framework is developed for autonomous mobile robots using a general 2D nonholonomic unicycle model that can be applied to different types of UAVs, ground vehicles and underwater vehicles considering only lateral motion. Then, the more complex problem of three-dimensional (3D) collision-free navigation in unknown/dynamic environments is addressed. To that end, advanced 3D reactive control strategies are developed adopting the sense-and-avoid paradigm to produce quick reactions around obstacles. A special case of navigation in 3D unknown confined environments (i.e. tunnel-like) is also addressed. General 3D kinematic models are considered in the design which makes these methods applicable to different UAV types in addition to underwater vehicles. Moreover, different implementation methods for these strategies with quadrotor-type UAVs are also investigated considering UAV dynamics in the control design. Practical experiments and simulations were carried out to analyze the performance of the developed methods. The second part of this thesis addresses safe navigation for multi-UAV systems. Distributed motion coordination methods of multi-UAV systems for flocking and 3D area coverage are developed. These methods offer good computational cost for large-scale systems. Simulations were performed to verify the performance of these methods considering systems with different sizes
