    Combined make-to-order and make-to-stock in a food production system

    The research into multi-product production/inventory control systems has mainly assumed one of the two strategies: Make-to-Order (MTO) or Make-to-Stock (MTS). In practice, however, many companies cater to an increasing variety of products with varying logistical demands (e.g. short due dates, specific products) and production characteristics (e.g. capacity usage, setup) to different market segments and so they are moving to more MTO-production. As a consequence they operate under a hybrid MTO-MTS strategy. Important issues arising out of such situations are, for example, which products should be manufactured to stock and which ones on order and, how to allocate capacity among various MTO-MTS products. This paper presents the state-of-the-art literature review of the combined MTO-MTS production situations. A variety of production management issues in the context of food processing companies, where combined MTO-MTS production is quite common, are discussed in details. The authors propose a comprehensive hierarchical planning framework that covers the important production management decisions to serve as a starting point for evaluation and further research on the planning system for MTO-MTS situations.

    Competitiveness of Indian Manufacturing: Finding of the 2001 National Manufacturing Survey

    In this paper we present findings of the second national survey on the competitiveness of Indian manufacturing. The paper develops hypotheses on the competitiveness of firms in the manufacturing sector and addresses some key questions on the characteristics of world class firms in India. We analyze the processes and practices that such firms have adopted to become world class. More important, we highlight firm level practices that are preventing Indian firms from becoming globally competitive. The findings point towards three distinct aspects of manufacturing management that define the capabilities of the firm, i.e., strategies related to dynamic control of shop floors, network linkages and innovation. It is found that firms that build distinctive technological and managerial capabilities in these domains are able to compete globally. The paper provides a comparison with manufacturing capabilities of competitors in China and draws lessons for organizing large scale manufacturing. It also provides an assessment of the changes that have happened in manufacturing priorities and strategies in India since our last survey that was conducted in 1997 and highlights the implications of these changes.

    In this theme article, we summarize the broad characteristics of Vision 2020 (a document which outlines the transformation process related to evolution of India as a developed nation by 2020) as envisaged by Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. We discuss the enabling role of our discipline related to this critical national (social) transformation process. This theme article is organized in three segments. The first segment, which is drawn heavily based on the published work by Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam introduces the salient features of Vision 2020 and a road map related to realizing this national dream. The second segment sketches the evolution of operations research as a scientific discipline in the international and Indian context. The third and final segment of the article relate OR tools and techniques that can facilitate the planning and implementation of several projects / activities / policies in the overall context of Vision 2020.

    Computer Aided Analysis, Planning, and Control of Space Systems Operations

    The complexity and operational dynamics of modern space systems has dictated a need for computerized tools to assist in the analysis, planning, and control of space system operations. Three computer programs (ACTNET, TLGEN, and WICK 9) which have been applied successfully to these problems are discussed in this paper. ACTNET is a second generation discrete-event simulation system designed for the functional analysis of complex processes. It is applicable to systems which may be modeled as networks of activities that are constrained by precedence, logical conditions, and limited resources. ACTNET has been employed within the Nuclear Stage, Space Station, and Space Shuttle programs by MDAC-West. TLGEN is a computer program currently under development by MDAC-West for generating operational mission timelines. In its batch mode of operation, it is used for planning on-orbit operations. In its interactive (on-line) mode, it can support real-time control of on-orbit operations by mission control/ground system personnel. TLGEN is designed for scheduling detailed sequences of events subject to event duration time, execution time, priority, resource usage, and environmental constraints (ephemeris)

    A Survey of Smart Manufacturing for High-Mix Low-Volume Production in Defense and Aerospace Industries

    Defense and aerospace industries usually possess unique high-mix low-volume production characteristics. This uniqueness generally calls for prohibitive production costs and long production lead-time. One of the major trends in advanced, smart manufacturing is to be more responsive and better readiness while ensuring the same or higher production quality and lower cost. This study reviews the state-of-the-art manufacturing technologies to solve these issues and previews two levels of flexibility, i.e., system and process, that could potentially reduce the costs while increasing the production volume in such a scenario. The main contribution of the work includes an assessment of the current solutions for HMLV scenarios, especially within the defense of aerospace sectors, and a survey of the current and potential future practices focusing on smart production process planning and flexible assembly plan driven by emerging techniques

    Production planning under dynamic product environment: a multi-objective goal programming approach

    Production planning is a complicated task that requires cooperation among multiple functional units in any organization. In order to design an efficient production planning system, a good understanding of the environment in terms of customers, products and manufacturing processes is a must. Although such planning exists in the company, it is often incorrectly structured due to the presence of multiple conflicting objectives. The primary difficulty in modern decision analysis is the treatment of multiple conflicting objectives. A formal decision analysis that is capable of handling multiple conflicting goals through the use of priorities may be a new frontier of management science. The objective of this study is to develop a multi objective goal programming (MOGP) model to a real-life manufacturing situation to show the trade-off between different some times conflicting goals concerning customer, product and manufacturing of production planning environment. For illustration, two independent goal priority structures have been considered. The insights gained from the experimentation with the two goal priority structures will guide and assist the decision maker for achieving the organizational goals for optimum utilization of resources in improving companies competitiveness. The MOGP results of the study are of very useful to various functional areas of the selected case organization for routine planning and scheduling. Some of the specific decision making situations in this context are: (i). the expected quality costs and production costs under identified product scenarios, (ii).under and over utilization of crucial machine at different combinations of production volumes, and (iii). the achievement of sales revenue goal at different production volume combinations. The ease of use and interpretation make the proposed MOGP model a powerful communication tool between top and bottom level managers while converting the strategic level objectives into concrete tactical and operational level plans.

    A study of alternative forms of flexible manufacturing systems

    The study relates to manufacturing conditions in a particular company. Flow synthesis and cell formation analysis have been conducted. A modification of methodology proposed by other researchers has assisted analysis. The main investigation is concerned with modelling, simulation and evaluation of seven alternative FMS configurations conceived for the machining cell manufacturing prismatic parts. The alternative systems encompass 6 CNC machines with (i) manual transport of materials and tools, (ii) with two and four station automated pallet changers, (iii) conveyor system, (iv) stacker crane, (v) rail guided shuttle, and (vi) AGV transport.
