    Effective memory management for mobile environments

    Smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices exhibit vastly different constraints compared to regular or classic computing environments like desktops, laptops, or servers. Mobile devices run dozens of so-called “apps” hosted by independent virtual machines (VM). All these VMs run concurrently and each VM deploys purely local heuristics to organize resources like memory, performance, and power. Such a design causes conflicts across all layers of the software stack, calling for the evaluation of VMs and the optimization techniques specific for mobile frameworks. In this dissertation, we study the design of managed runtime systems for mobile platforms. More specifically, we deepen the understanding of interactions between garbage collection (GC) and system layers. We develop tools to monitor the memory behavior of Android-based apps and to characterize GC performance, leading to the development of new techniques for memory management that address energy constraints, time performance, and responsiveness. We implement a GC-aware frequency scaling governor for Android devices. We also explore the tradeoffs of power and performance in vivo for a range of realistic GC variants, with established benchmarks and real applications running on Android virtual machines. We control for variation due to dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS), Just-in-time (JIT) compilation, and across established dimensions of heap memory size and concurrency. Finally, we provision GC as a global service that collects statistics from all running VMs and then makes an informed decision that optimizes across all them (and not just locally), and across all layers of the stack. Our evaluation illustrates the power of such a central coordination service and garbage collection mechanism in improving memory utilization, throughput, and adaptability to user activities. In fact, our techniques aim at a sweet spot, where total on-chip energy is reduced (20–30%) with minimal impact on throughput and responsiveness (5–10%). The simplicity and efficacy of our approach reaches well beyond the usual optimization techniques

    Impact of Memory Frequency Scaling on User-centric Smartphone Workloads

    Improving battery life in mobile phones has become a top concern with the increase in memory and computing requirements of applications with tough quality-of-service needs. Many energy-efficient mobile solutions vary the CPU and GPU voltage/frequency to save power consumption. However, energy-aware control over the memory bus connecting the various on-chip subsystems has had much less interest. This measurement-based study first analyse the CPU, GPU and memory cost (i.e. product of utilisation and frequency) of user-centric smartphone workloads. The impact of memory frequency scaling on power consumption and quality-of-service is also measured. We also present a preliminary analysis into the frequency levels selected by the different default governors of the CPU/GPU/memory components.We show that an interdependency exists between the CPU and memory governors and that it may cause unnecessary increase in power consumption, due to interference with the CPU frequency governor. The observations made in this measurement-based study can also reveal some design insights to system designers

    User Interaction Aware Reinforcement Learning for Power and Thermal Efficiency of CPU-GPU Mobile MPSoCs

    Mobile user’s usage behaviour changes throughout the day and the desirable Quality of Service (QoS) could thus change for each session. In this paper, we propose a QoS aware agent to monitor mobile user’s usage behaviour to find the target frame rate, which satisfies the desired user’s QoS, and applies reinforcement learning based DVFS on a CPU-GPU MPSoC to satisfy the frame rate requirement. Experimental study on a real Exynos hardware platform shows that our proposed agent is able to achieve a maximum of 50% power saving and 29% reduction in peak temperature compared to stock Android’s power saving scheme. It also outperforms the existing state-of-the-art power and thermal management scheme by 41% and 19%, respectively

    Real-time content-aware video retargeting on the Android platform for tunnel vision assistance

    As mobile devices continue to rise in popularity, advances in overall mobile device processing power lead to further expansion of their capabilities. This, coupled with the fact that many people suffer from low vision, leaves substantial room for advancing mobile development for low vision assistance. Computer vision is capable of assisting and accommodating individuals with blind spots or tunnel vision by extracting the necessary information and presenting it to the user in a manner they are able to visualize. Such a system would enable individuals with low vision to function with greater ease. Additionally, offering assistance on a mobile platform allows greater access. The objective of this thesis is to develop a computer vision application for low vision assistance on the Android mobile device platform. Specifically, the goal of the application is to reduce the effects tunnel vision inflicts on individuals. This is accomplished by providing an in-depth real-time video retargeting model that builds upon previous works and applications. Seam carving is a content-aware retargeting operator which defines 8-connected paths, or seams, of pixels. The optimality of these seams is based on a specific energy function. Discrete removal of these seams permits changes in the aspect ratio while simultaneously preserving important regions. The video retargeting model incorporates spatial and temporal considerations to provide effective image and video retargeting. Data reduction techniques are utilized in order to generate an efficient model. Additionally, a minimalistic multi-operator approach is constructed to diminish the disadvantages experienced by individual operators. In the event automated techniques fail, interactive options are provided that allow for user intervention. Evaluation of the application and its video retargeting model is based on its comparison to existing standard algorithms and its ability to extend itself to real-time. Performance metrics are obtained for both PC environments and mobile device platforms for comparison
