    Data trend mining for predictive systems design

    The goal of this research is to propose a data mining based design framework that can be used to solve complex systems design problems in a timely and efficient manner, with the main focus being product family design problems. Traditional data acquisition techniques that have been employed in the product design community have relied primarily on customer survey data or focus group feedback as a means of integrating customer preference information into the product design process. The reliance of direct customer interaction can be costly and time consuming and may therefore limit the overall size and complexity of the customer preference data. Furthermore, since survey data typically represents stated customer preferences (customer responses for hypothetical product designs, rather than actual product purchasing decisions made), design engineers may not know the true customer preferences for specific product attributes, a challenge that could ultimately result in misguided product designs. By analyzing large scale time series consumer data, new products can be designed that anticipate emerging product preference trends in the market space. The proposed data trend mining algorithm will enable design engineers to determine how to characterize attributes based on their relevance to the overall product design. A cell phone case study is used to demonstrate product design problems involving new product concept generation and an aerodynamic particle separator case study is presented for product design problems requiring attribute relevance characterization and product family clustering. Finally, it is shown that the proposed trend mining methodology can be expanded beyond product design problems to include systems of systems design problems such as military systems simulations

    Portfolio Construction: The Efficient Diversification of Marketing Investments

    Efforts in the marketing sciences can be distinguished between the analysis of individual customers and the examination of portfolios of customers, giving scarce theoretical guidance concerning the strategic allocation of promotional investments. Yet, strategic asset allocation is considered in financial economics theory to be the most important set of investment decisions. The problem addressed in this study was the application of strategic asset allocation theory from financial economics to marketing science with the aim of improving the financial results of investment in direct marketing promotions. This research investigated the components of efficient marketing portfolio construction which include multiattribute numerical optimization, stochastic Brownian motion, peer index tracking schemes, and data mining methods to formulate unique investable asset classes. Three outcomes resulted from this study on optimal diversification: (a) reduced saturative promotional activities balancing inefficient advertising cost and enterprise revenue objectives to achieve an investment equilibrium state; (b) the use of utility theory to assist in the lexicographic ordering of goal priorities; and (c) the solution approach to a multiperiod linear goal program with stochastic extensions. A performance test using a large archival set of customer data illustrated the benefits of efficient portfolio construction. The test asset allocation resulted in significantly more reward than that of the benchmark case. The results of this grounded theory study may be of interest to marketing researchers, operations research practitioners, and functional marketing executives. The social change implication is increased efficiency in allocation of large advertising budgets resulting in improved corporate performance

    Pricing network analysis of a supermarket chain in Portugal

    Project Work presented as the partial requirement for obtaining a Master's degree in Statistics and Information Management, specialization in Information Analysis and ManagementWith the growth of digital transformation, the business is now conducted in the digital age, opening new markets and new business opportunities with a simple click, sitting at home. Along with it, as the internet grows, more data is exposed, which leads us to competitive advantages, especially during the pandemic and in the post-pandemic period. This work explores daily price data from the online website of one of the largest supermarket chains in Portugal, covering the period between February 2020 to March of 2021. To observe the market and the competition behavior, we applied the science of networks, a data mining technique that provides deeper insight into the structure of the retailer market. We used the Maximum Spanning Tree and added the most relevant links from the correlation matrix to represent the retail market. As a starting point, we were able to build five networks that represent the daily price changes for products, categories, and brands. Moreover, we study the network interactions using centrality measures, namely: degree, betweenness, closeness, and eigenvector. These outputs were useful by creating better visibility of the market using real data from online retailing platforms and making available the first input for future work and further research to improve the pricing strategies

    This is the eighth in the series of highly successful international workshops on the Teaching, Learning and Assessment of Databases (TLAD 2010), which once again is held as a workshop of BNCOD 2010 - the 27th International Information Systems Conference. TLAD 2010 is held on the 28th June at the beautiful Dudhope Castle at the Abertay University, just before BNCOD, and hopes to be just as successful as its predecessors.The teaching of databases is central to all Computing Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems and Information Technology courses, and this year, the workshop aims to continue the tradition of bringing together both database teachers and researchers, in order to share good learning, teaching and assessment practice and experience, and further the growing community amongst database academics. As well as attracting academics from the UK community, the workshop has also been successful in attracting academics from the wider international community, through serving on the programme committee, and attending and presenting papers.This year, the workshop includes an invited talk given by Richard Cooper (of the University of Glasgow) who will present a discussion and some results from the Database Disciplinary Commons which was held in the UK over the academic year. Due to the healthy number of high quality submissions this year, the workshop will also present seven peer reviewed papers, and six refereed poster papers. Of the seven presented papers, three will be presented as full papers and four as short papers. These papers and posters cover a number of themes, including: approaches to teaching databases, e.g. group centered and problem based learning; use of novel case studies, e.g. forensics and XML data; techniques and approaches for improving teaching and student learning processes; assessment techniques, e.g. peer review; methods for improving students abilities to develop database queries and develop E-R diagrams; and e-learning platforms for supporting teaching and learning
