    Intelligent ultrasound hand gesture recognition system

    With the booming development of technology, hand gesture recognition has become a hotspot in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) systems. Ultrasound hand gesture recognition is an innovative method that has attracted ample interest due to its strong real-time performance, low cost, large field of view, and illumination independence. Well-investigated HCI applications include external digital pens, game controllers on smart mobile devices, and web browser control on laptops. This thesis probes gesture recognition systems on multiple platforms to study the behavior of system performance with various gesture features. Focused on this topic, the contributions of this thesis can be summarized from the perspectives of smartphone acoustic field and hand model simulation, real-time gesture recognition on smart devices with speed categorization algorithm, fast reaction gesture recognition based on temporal neural networks, and angle of arrival-based gesture recognition system. Firstly, a novel pressure-acoustic simulation model is developed to examine its potential for use in acoustic gesture recognition. The simulation model is creating a new system for acoustic verification, which uses simulations mimicking real-world sound elements to replicate a sound pressure environment as authentically as possible. This system is fine-tuned through sensitivity tests within the simulation and validate with real-world measurements. Following this, the study constructs novel simulations for acoustic applications, informed by the verified acoustic field distribution, to assess their effectiveness in specific devices. Furthermore, a simulation focused on understanding the effects of the placement of sound devices and hand-reflected sound waves is properly designed. Moreover, a feasibility test on phase control modification is conducted, revealing the practical applications and boundaries of this model. Mobility and system accuracy are two significant factors that determine gesture recognition performance. As smartphones have high-quality acoustic devices for developing gesture recognition, to achieve a portable gesture recognition system with high accuracy, novel algorithms were developed to distinguish gestures using smartphone built-in speakers and microphones. The proposed system adopts Short-Time-Fourier-Transform (STFT) and machine learning to capture hand movement and determine gestures by the pretrained neural network. To differentiate gesture speeds, a specific neural network was designed and set as part of the classification algorithm. The final accuracy rate achieves 96% among nine gestures and three speed levels. The proposed algorithms were evaluated comparatively through algorithm comparison, and the accuracy outperformed state-of-the-art systems. Furthermore, a fast reaction gesture recognition based on temporal neural networks was designed. Traditional ultrasound gesture recognition adopts convolutional neural networks that have flaws in terms of response time and discontinuous operation. Besides, overlap intervals in network processing cause cross-frame failures that greatly reduce system performance. To mitigate these problems, a novel fast reaction gesture recognition system that slices signals in short time intervals was designed. The proposed system adopted a novel convolutional recurrent neural network (CRNN) that calculates gesture features in a short time and combines features over time. The results showed the reaction time significantly reduced from 1s to 0.2s, and accuracy improved to 100% for six gestures. Lastly, an acoustic sensor array was built to investigate the angle information of performed gestures. The direction of a gesture is a significant feature for gesture classification, which enables the same gesture in different directions to represent different actions. Previous studies mainly focused on types of gestures and analyzing approaches (e.g., Doppler Effect and channel impulse response, etc.), while the direction of gestures was not extensively studied. An acoustic gesture recognition system based on both speed information and gesture direction was developed. The system achieved 94.9% accuracy among ten different gestures from two directions. The proposed system was evaluated comparatively through numerical neural network structures, and the results confirmed that incorporating additional angle information improved the system's performance. In summary, the work presented in this thesis validates the feasibility of recognizing hand gestures using remote ultrasonic sensing across multiple platforms. The acoustic simulation explores the smartphone acoustic field distribution and response results in the context of hand gesture recognition applications. The smartphone gesture recognition system demonstrates the accuracy of recognition through ultrasound signals and conducts an analysis of classification speed. The fast reaction system proposes a more optimized solution to address the cross-frame issue using temporal neural networks, reducing the response latency to 0.2s. The speed and angle-based system provides an additional feature for gesture recognition. The established work will accelerate the development of intelligent hand gesture recognition, enrich the available gesture features, and contribute to further research in various gestures and application scenarios

    Laser Technologies for Applications in Quantum Information Science

    Scientific progress in experimental physics is inevitably dependent on continuing advances in the underlying technologies. Laser technologies enable controlled coherent and dissipative atom-light interactions and micro-optical technologies allow for the implementation of versatile optical systems not accessible with standard optics. This thesis reports on important advances in both technologies with targeted applications ranging from Rydberg-state mediated quantum simulation and computation with individual atoms in arrays of optical tweezers to high-resolution spectroscopy of highly-charged ions. A wide range of advances in laser technologies are reported: The long-term stability and maintainability of external-cavity diode laser systems is improved significantly by introducing a mechanically adjustable lens mount. Tapered-amplifier modules based on a similar lens mount are developed. The diode laser systems are complemented by digital controllers for laser frequency and intensity stabilisation. The controllers offer a bandwidth of up to 1.25 MHz and a noise performance set by the commercial STEMlab platform. In addition, shot-noise limited photodetectors optimised for intensity stabilisation and Pound-Drever-Hall frequency stabilisation as well as a fiber based detector for beat notes in the MHz-regime are developed. The capabilities of the presented techniques are demonstrated by analysing the performance of a laser system used for laser cooling of Rb85 at a wavelength of 780 nm. A reference laser system is stabilised to a spectroscopic reference provided by modulation transfer spectroscopy. This spectroscopy scheme is analysed finding optimal operation at high modulation indices. A suitable signal is generated with a compact and cost-efficient module. A scheme for laser offset-frequency stabilisation based on an optical phase-locked loop is realised. All frequency locks derived from the reference laser system offer a Lorentzian linewidth of 60 kHz (FWHM) in combination with a long-term stability of 130 kHz peak-to-peak within 10 days. Intensity stabilisation based on acousto-optic modulators in combination with the digital controller allows for real-time intensity control on microsecond time scales complemented by a sample and hold feature with a response time of 150 ns. High demands on the spectral properties of the laser systems are put forward for the coherent excitation of quantum states. In this thesis, the performance of active frequency stabilisation is enhanced by introducing a novel current modulation technique for diode lasers. A flat response from DC to 100 MHz and a phase lag below 90° up to 25 MHz are achieved extending the bandwidth available for laserfrequency stabilisation. Applying this technique in combination with a fast proportional-derivative controller, two laser fields with a relative phase noise of 42 mrad for driving rubidium ground state transitions are realised. A laser system for coherent Rydberg excitation via a two-photon scheme provides light at 780 nm and at 480 nm via frequency-doubling from 960 nm. An output power of 0.6 W at 480 nm from a single-mode optical fiber is obtained . The frequencies of both laser systems are stabilised to a high-finesse reference cavity resulting in a linewidth of 1.02 kHz (FWHM) at 960 nm. Numerical simulations quantify the effect of the finite linewidth on the coherence of Rydberg Rabi-oscillations. A laser system similar to the 480 nm Rydberg system is developed for spectroscopy on highly charged bismuth. Advanced optical technologies are also at the heart of the micro-optical generation of tweezer arrays that offer unprecedented scalability of the system size. By using an optimised lens system in combination with an automatic evaluation routine, a tweezer array with several thousand sites and trap waists below 1 Όm is demonstrated. A similar performance is achieved with a microlens array produced in an additive manufacturing process. The microlens design is optimised for the manufacturing process. Furthermore, scattering rates in dipole traps due to suppressed resonant light are analysed proving the feasibility of dipole trap generation using tapered amplifier systems

    Validation of Sentinel-3a Sral Coastal Sea Level Data at High Posting Rate: 80Hz

    Altimetry data of two and a half years (June 2016-November 2018) of Sentinel 3A SRAL were validated at the sampling frequency of 80 Hz. The study areas are three coastal sites in Spain: Huelva (HU) (Gulf of Cadiz), Barcelona (BA), and Bilbao (BI). Two tracks were selected in each site: one ascending and one descending. Data were validated using in situ tide gauge (TG) data provided by the Spanish Puertos del Estado. In the 5 to 20 km segment, the results were 6-8 cm (rmse) and 0.7-0.8 (r) for all the tracks. The 0 to 5 km segment was also analyzed in detail to study the land effect on the altimetry data quality. The results showed that the track orientation, the angle of intersection with the coast, and the land topography concur to determine the nearest distance to the coast at which the data retain a similar level of accuracy than in the 5 to 20 km segment. This distance of good quality to shore reaches a minimum of 3 km for the tracks at HU and the descending track at BA

    Systems Analysis for Sustainable Wellbeing. 50 years of IIASA research, 40 years after the Brundtland Commission, contributing to the post-2030 Global Agenda

    This report chronicles the half-century-long history of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), established in 1972 in Laxenburg, Austria, to address common social, economic, and environmental challenges at a time when the world was politically dominated by the Cold War. The report shows IIASA’s transition from its original raison d’ĂȘtre as a cooperative scientific venture between East and West to its position today as a global institute engaged in exploring solutions to some of the world’s most intractable problems—the interconnected problems of population, climate change, biodiversity loss, land, energy, and water use, among others. It provides a concise overview of IIASA’s key contributions to science over the last 50 years and of the advances it has made not only in analyzing existing and emerging trends but also in developing enhanced scientific tools to address them. The report also shows how IIASA is currently working with distinguished partners worldwide to establish the scientific basis for a successful transition to sustainable development. The global mandate, to achieve the 2030 Agenda, its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and 169 specific targets, features prominently in the institute’s work and in the report at hand: the pathways needed to achieve the SDGs have been the basis of many scientific studies by IIASA and its partners. The predominantly “bottom-up” nature of tackling the SDGs has required optimal responses to the very diverse and overlapping issues they involve, including judicious tradeoffs among the solutions that can be applied. Now, at the mid-term review point of the 2030 Agenda, this report focuses on the big picture and clarifies why, after years of scientific endeavor, the ultimate goal of this difficult global mandate should be sustainable wellbeing for all. The report is in six parts that summarize past and current IIASA research highlights and point toward future challenges and solutions: i) Systems analysis for a challenged world; ii) Population and human capital; iii) Food security, ecosystems, and biodiversity; iv) Energy, technology, and climate change; v) Global systems analysis for understanding the drivers of sustainable wellbeing; and vi) Moving into the future: Three critical policy messages. The three critical policy messages, necessary to trigger discussions about a post-2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development are: (1) Suboptimization is suboptimal: Mainstream a systems-analysis approach into policymaking at all levels. (2) Enhance individual agency: Prioritize women’s empowerment through universal female education; and (3) Strengthen collective action and governance: Global cooperation and representation for the global common

    SCALING UP TASK EXECUTION ON RESOURCE-CONSTRAINED SYSTEMS

    The ubiquity of executing machine learning tasks on embedded systems with constrained resources has made efficient execution of neural networks on these systems under the CPU, memory, and energy constraints increasingly important. Different from high-end computing systems where resources are abundant and reliable, resource-constrained systems only have limited computational capability, limited memory, and limited energy supply. This dissertation focuses on how to take full advantage of the limited resources of these systems in order to improve task execution efficiency from different aspects of the execution pipeline. While the existing literature primarily aims at solving the problem by shrinking the model size according to the resource constraints, this dissertation aims to improve the execution efficiency for a given set of tasks from the following two aspects. Firstly, we propose SmartON, which is the first batteryless active event detection system that considers both the event arrival pattern as well as the harvested energy to determine when the system should wake up and what the duty cycle should be. Secondly, we propose Antler, which exploits the affinity between all pairs of tasks in a multitask inference system to construct a compact graph representation of the task set for a given overall size budget. To achieve the aforementioned algorithmic proposals, we propose the following hardware solutions. One is a controllable capacitor array that can expand the system’s energy storage on-the-fly.     Development of a sensor for microvibrations measurement in the AlbaSat CubeSat mission

    openMicrovibrations on spacecraft represent an issue for payloads requiring high pointing accuracy and/or stability over time, and they might represent a particular concern for CubeSats and small satellites that, usually, are not equipped with very-high performance attitude control systems. Hence, collecting reliable measures of the vibration spectra during the operations of a CubeSat represents a significant research activity. This thesis presents the development of a sensor, configured as a payload within the AlbaSat mission, capable of accurately measuring the microvibrations in space, with particular focus on those produced by the Momentum Exchange Devices (MED), i.e., Reaction or Momentum Wheels, that represent one of the most important microvibrations sources. The thesis takes place in the framework of the AlbaSat mission. AlbaSat is a 2U CubeSat developed by a student team of the University of Padova under the “Fly Your Satellite! – Design Booster” programme promoted by the European Space Agency (ESA). The mission has four different objectives: (1) to collect measurements of the space debris environment in-situ, (2) to measure the microvibrations on board the CubeSat, (3) to precisely determine the position of the satellite through laser ranging and (4) to investigate alternative systems for possible Satellite Quantum Communication applications on nanosatellites. The requirements for the correct sizing of the sensor and the chosen physical and functional architecture are defined and presented in the thesis. A meticulous schedule for functional tests is finally outlined, aimed at verifying the correct functionality of the microvibration sensor.     Design and Real-World Evaluation of Dependable Wireless Cyber-Physical Systems

    The ongoing effort for an efficient, sustainable, and automated interaction between humans, machines, and our environment will make cyber-physical systems (CPS) an integral part of the industry and our daily lives. At their core, CPS integrate computing elements, communication networks, and physical processes that are monitored and controlled through sensors and actuators. New and innovative applications become possible by extending or replacing static and expensive cable-based communication infrastructures with wireless technology. The flexibility of wireless CPS is a key enabler for many envisioned scenarios, such as intelligent factories, smart farming, personalized healthcare systems, autonomous search and rescue, and smart cities. High dependability, efficiency, and adaptivity requirements complement the demand for wireless and low-cost solutions in such applications. For instance, industrial and medical systems should work reliably and predictably with performance guarantees, even if parts of the system fail. Because emerging CPS will feature mobile and battery-driven devices that can execute various tasks, the systems must also quickly adapt to frequently changing conditions. Moreover, as applications become ever more sophisticated, featuring compact embedded devices that are deployed densely and at scale, efficient designs are indispensable to achieve desired operational lifetimes and satisfy high bandwidth demands. Meeting these partly conflicting requirements, however, is challenging due to imperfections of wireless communication and resource constraints along several dimensions, for example, computing, memory, and power constraints of the devices. More precisely, frequent and correlated message losses paired with very limited bandwidth and varying delays for the message exchange significantly complicate the control design. In addition, since communication ranges are limited, messages must be relayed over multiple hops to cover larger distances, such as an entire factory. Although the resulting mesh networks are more robust against interference, efficient communication is a major challenge as wireless imperfections get amplified, and significant coordination effort is needed, especially if the networks are dynamic. CPS combine various research disciplines, which are often investigated in isolation, ignoring their complex interaction. However, to address this interaction and build trust in the proposed solutions, evaluating CPS using real physical systems and wireless networks paired with formal guarantees of a system’s end-to-end behavior is necessary. Existing works that take this step can only satisfy a few of the abovementioned requirements. Most notably, multi-hop communication has only been used to control slow physical processes while providing no guarantees. One of the reasons is that the current communication protocols are not suited for dynamic multi-hop networks. This thesis closes the gap between existing works and the diverse needs of emerging wireless CPS. The contributions address different research directions and are split into two parts. In the first part, we specifically address the shortcomings of existing communication protocols and make the following contributions to provide a solid networking foundation: ‱ We present Mixer, a communication primitive for the reliable many-to-all message exchange in dynamic wireless multi-hop networks. Mixer runs on resource-constrained low-power embedded devices and combines synchronous transmissions and network coding for a highly scalable and topology-agnostic message exchange. As a result, it supports mobile nodes and can serve any possible traffic patterns, for example, to efficiently realize distributed control, as required by emerging CPS applications. ‱ We present Butler, a lightweight and distributed synchronization mechanism with formally guaranteed correctness properties to improve the dependability of synchronous transmissions-based protocols. These protocols require precise time synchronization provided by a specific node. Upon failure of this node, the entire network cannot communicate. Butler removes this single point of failure by quickly synchronizing all nodes in the network without affecting the protocols’ performance. In the second part, we focus on the challenges of integrating communication and various control concepts using classical time-triggered and modern event-based approaches. Based on the design, implementation, and evaluation of the proposed solutions using real systems and networks, we make the following contributions, which in many ways push the boundaries of previous approaches: ‱ We are the first to demonstrate and evaluate fast feedback control over low-power wireless multi-hop networks. Essential for this achievement is a novel co-design and integration of communication and control. Our wireless embedded platform tames the imperfections impairing control, for example, message loss and varying delays, and considers the resulting key properties in the control design. Furthermore, the careful orchestration of control and communication tasks enables real-time operation and makes our system amenable to an end-to-end analysis. Due to this, we can provably guarantee closed-loop stability for physical processes with linear time-invariant dynamics. ‱ We propose control-guided communication, a novel co-design for distributed self-triggered control over wireless multi-hop networks. Self-triggered control can save energy by transmitting data only when needed. However, there are no solutions that bring those savings to multi-hop networks and that can reallocate freed-up resources, for example, to other agents. Our control system informs the communication system of its transmission demands ahead of time so that communication resources can be allocated accordingly. Thus, we can transfer the energy savings from the control to the communication side and achieve an end-to-end benefit. ‱ We present a novel co-design of distributed control and wireless communication that resolves overload situations in which the communication demand exceeds the available bandwidth. As systems scale up, featuring more agents and higher bandwidth demands, the available bandwidth will be quickly exceeded, resulting in overload. While event-triggered control and self-triggered control approaches reduce the communication demand on average, they cannot prevent that potentially all agents want to communicate simultaneously. We address this limitation by dynamically allocating the available bandwidth to the agents with the highest need.     Accurate quantum transport modelling and epitaxial structure design of high-speed and high-power In0.53Ga0.47As/AlAs double-barrier resonant tunnelling diodes for 300-GHz oscillator sources

    Terahertz (THz) wave technology is envisioned as an appealing and conceivable solution in the context of several potential high-impact applications, including sixth generation (6G) and beyond consumer-oriented ultra-broadband multi-gigabit wireless data-links, as well as highresolution imaging, radar, and spectroscopy apparatuses employable in biomedicine, industrial processes, security/defence, and material science. Despite the technological challenges posed by the THz gap, recent scientific advancements suggest the practical viability of THz systems. However, the development of transmitters (Tx) and receivers (Rx) based on compact semiconductor devices operating at THz frequencies is urgently demanded to meet the performance requirements calling from emerging THz applications. Although several are the promising candidates, including high-speed III-V transistors and photo-diodes, resonant tunnelling diode (RTD) technology offers a compact and high performance option in many practical scenarios. However, the main weakness of the technology is currently represented by the low output power capability of RTD THz Tx, which is mainly caused by the underdeveloped and non-optimal device, as well as circuit, design implementation approaches. Indeed, indium phosphide (InP) RTD devices can nowadays deliver only up to around 1 mW of radio-frequency (RF) power at around 300 GHz. In the context of THz wireless data-links, this severely impacts the Tx performance, limiting communication distance and data transfer capabilities which, at the current time, are of the order of few tens of gigabit per second below around 1 m. However, recent research studies suggest that several milliwatt of output power are required to achieve bit-rate capabilities of several tens of gigabits per second and beyond, and to reach several metres of communication distance in common operating conditions. Currently, the shortterm target is set to 5−10 mW of output power at around 300 GHz carrier waves, which would allow bit-rates in excess of 100 Gb/s, as well as wireless communications well above 5 m distance, in first-stage short-range scenarios. In order to reach it, maximisation of the RTD highfrequency RF power capability is of utmost importance. Despite that, reliable epitaxial structure design approaches, as well as accurate physical-based numerical simulation tools, aimed at RF power maximisation in the 300 GHz-band are lacking at the current time. This work aims at proposing practical solutions to address the aforementioned issues. First, a physical-based simulation methodology was developed to accurately and reliably simulate the static current-voltage (IV ) characteristic of indium gallium arsenide/aluminium arsenide (In-GaAs/AlAs) double-barrier RTD devices. The approach relies on the non-equilibrium Green’s function (NEGF) formalism implemented in Silvaco Atlas technology computer-aided design (TCAD) simulation package, requires low computational budget, and allows to correctly model In0.53Ga0.47As/AlAs RTD devices, which are pseudomorphically-grown on lattice-matched to InP substrates, and are commonly employed in oscillators working at around 300 GHz. By selecting the appropriate physical models, and by retrieving the correct materials parameters, together with a suitable discretisation of the associated heterostructure spatial domain through finite-elements, it is shown, by comparing simulation data with experimental results, that the developed numerical approach can reliably compute several quantities of interest that characterise the DC IV curve negative differential resistance (NDR) region, including peak current, peak voltage, and voltage swing, all of which are key parameters in RTD oscillator design. The demonstrated simulation approach was then used to study the impact of epitaxial structure design parameters, including those characterising the double-barrier quantum well, as well as emitter and collector regions, on the electrical properties of the RTD device. In particular, a comprehensive simulation analysis was conducted, and the retrieved output trends discussed based on the heterostructure band diagram, transmission coefficient energy spectrum, charge distribution, and DC current-density voltage (JV) curve. General design guidelines aimed at enhancing the RTD device maximum RF power gain capability are then deduced and discussed. To validate the proposed epitaxial design approach, an In0.53Ga0.47As/AlAs double-barrier RTD epitaxial structure providing several milliwatt of RF power was designed by employing the developed simulation methodology, and experimentally-investigated through the microfabrication of RTD devices and subsequent high-frequency characterisation up to 110 GHz. The analysis, which included fabrication optimisation, reveals an expected RF power performance of up to around 5 mW and 10 mW at 300 GHz for 25 ÎŒm2 and 49 ÎŒm2-large RTD devices, respectively, which is up to five times higher compared to the current state-of-the-art. Finally, in order to prove the practical employability of the proposed RTDs in oscillator circuits realised employing low-cost photo-lithography, both coplanar waveguide and microstrip inductive stubs are designed through a full three-dimensional electromagnetic simulation analysis. In summary, this work makes and important contribution to the rapidly evolving field of THz RTD technology, and demonstrates the practical feasibility of 300-GHz high-power RTD devices realisation, which will underpin the future development of Tx systems capable of the power levels required in the forthcoming THz applications
