    Archiving and Delivery of 3DTI Rehabilitation Sessions

    In this paper we present CyPhy: a cyber-physiotherapy system that brings daily rehabilitation to patient’s home with supervision from trained therapist. With its archiving and delivery features, CyPhy is able to 1) capture and record RGB-D and physiotherapy-related medical sensing data streams in home environment; 2) provide efficient storage for rehabilitation session recordings; 3) provide fast metadata analysis over stored sessions for review recommendation; 4) adaptively deliver rehabilitation session under different networking capabilities; 5) support smooth viewpoint changing during 3D video streaming with scene rendering schemes tailored for devices with different bandwidth and power limitations; and 6) provide platform-independent streaming client for various mobile and PC environments

    Architectural Constraints on the Bootstrapping of a Personal Health Record

    During the last decade we have seen a proliferation of electronic personal health record systems (PHRs) aiming to change the way people manage and receive healthcare. However, many of these initiatives have failed to take-off. We inquire into such unsatisfactory outcomes by drawing upon the perspective proposed in the information infrastructure (II) literature. This literature views the value of PHRs as dependent on the number of actors using them. This poses a challenge for designers (referred to as ‘bootstrapping’): how to persuade users to adopt a PHR when the user base is still small. To address the bootstrap- ping challenge, II literature suggests starting with a simple solution that creates immediate user value and enables users to enroll gradually. This paper seeks to explore how PHR architecture can hinder PHR bootstrapping through a longitudinal case study on the implementation of an integrated PHR. Our case analysis identifies four architectural constraints: poor data quality; coordination across heterogeneity; privacy and control; and re-configurability. This paper concludes by discussing the implications of the findings for the literature on personal and electronic health records and on the design of information infrastructures

    myTea: Connecting the Web to Digital Science on the Desktop

    Bioinformaticians regularly access the hundreds of databases and tools that are available to them on the Web. None of these tools communicate with each other, causing the scientist to copy results manually from a Web site into a spreadsheet or word processor. myGrids' Taverna has made it possible to create templates (workflows) that automatically run searches using these databases and tools, cutting down what previously took days of work into hours, and enabling the automated capture of experimental details. What is still missing in the capture process, however, is the details of work done on that material once it moves from the Web to the desktop: if a scientist runs a process on some data, there is nothing to record why that action was taken; it is likewise not easy to publish a record of this process back to the community on the Web. In this paper, we present a novel interaction framework, built on Semantic Web technologies, and grounded in usability design practice, in particular the Making Tea method. Through this work, we introduce a new model of practice designed specifically to (1) support the scientists' interactions with data from the Web to the desktop, (2) provide automatic annotation of process to capture what has previously been lost and (3) associate provenance services automatically with that data in order to enable meaningful interrogation of the process and controlled sharing of the results
