Privacy-Preserving Distributed Optimization via Subspace Perturbation: A General Framework
As the modern world becomes increasingly digitized and interconnected,
distributed signal processing has proven to be effective in processing its
large volume of data. However, a main challenge limiting the broad use of
distributed signal processing techniques is the issue of privacy in handling
sensitive data. To address this privacy issue, we propose a novel yet general
subspace perturbation method for privacy-preserving distributed optimization,
which allows each node to obtain the desired solution while protecting its
private data. In particular, we show that the dual variables introduced in each
distributed optimizer will not converge in a certain subspace determined by the
graph topology. Additionally, the optimization variable is ensured to converge
to the desired solution, because it is orthogonal to this non-convergent
subspace. We therefore propose to insert noise in the non-convergent subspace
through the dual variable such that the private data are protected, and the
accuracy of the desired solution is completely unaffected. Moreover, the
proposed method is shown to be secure under two widely-used adversary models:
passive and eavesdropping. Furthermore, we consider several distributed
optimizers such as ADMM and PDMM to demonstrate the general applicability of
the proposed method. Finally, we test the performance through a set of
applications. Numerical tests indicate that the proposed method is superior to
existing methods in terms of several parameters like estimated accuracy,
privacy level, communication cost and convergence rate
Fast Optimal Energy Management with Engine On/Off Decisions for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles
In this paper we demonstrate a novel alternating direction method of
multipliers (ADMM) algorithm for the solution of the hybrid vehicle energy
management problem considering both power split and engine on/off decisions.
The solution of a convex relaxation of the problem is used to initialize the
optimization, which is necessarily nonconvex, and whilst only local convergence
can be guaranteed, it is demonstrated that the algorithm will terminate with
the optimal power split for the given engine switching sequence. The algorithm
is compared in simulation against a charge-depleting/charge-sustaining (CDCS)
strategy and dynamic programming (DP) using real world driver behaviour data,
and it is demonstrated that the algorithm achieves 90\% of the fuel savings
obtained using DP with a 3000-fold reduction in computational time
Multi-Path Alpha-Fair Resource Allocation at Scale in Distributed Software Defined Networks
The performance of computer networks relies on how bandwidth is shared among
different flows. Fair resource allocation is a challenging problem particularly
when the flows evolve over time. To address this issue, bandwidth sharing
techniques that quickly react to the traffic fluctuations are of interest,
especially in large scale settings with hundreds of nodes and thousands of
flows. In this context, we propose a distributed algorithm based on the
Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) that tackles the multi-path
fair resource allocation problem in a distributed SDN control architecture. Our
ADMM-based algorithm continuously generates a sequence of resource allocation
solutions converging to the fair allocation while always remaining feasible, a
property that standard primal-dual decomposition methods often lack. Thanks to
the distribution of all computer intensive operations, we demonstrate that we
can handle large instances at scale
