Gabriel Harvey and the History of Reading: Essays by Lisa Jardine and others
Few articles in the humanities have had the impact of Lisa Jardine and Anthony Grafton’s seminal ‘Studied for Action’ (1990), a study of the reading practices of Elizabethan polymath and prolific annotator Gabriel Harvey. Their excavation of the setting, methods and ambitions of Harvey’s encounters with his books ignited the History of Reading, an interdisciplinary field which quickly became one of the most exciting corners of the scholarly cosmos. A generation inspired by the model of Harvey fanned out across the world’s libraries and archives, seeking to reveal the many creative, unexpected and curious ways that individuals throughout history responded to texts, and how these interpretations in turn illuminate past worlds.
Three decades on, Harvey’s example and Jardine’s work remain central to cutting-edge scholarship in the History of Reading. By uniting ‘Studied for Action’ with published and unpublished studies on Harvey by Jardine, Grafton and the scholars they have influenced, this collection provides a unique lens on the place of marginalia in textual, intellectual and cultural history. The chapters capture subsequent work on Harvey and map the fields opened by Jardine and Grafton’s original article, collectively offering a posthumous tribute to Lisa Jardine and an authoritative overview of the History of Reading
Indie encounters: exploring indie music socialising in China
Indie music, a genre deeply rooted in rock and punk music, is renowned for its independence from major commercial record labels. It has emerged as a choice for music consumers seeking alternatives to mainstream popular music, catering to a niche music preference. The minority nature of indie music not only provides its lovers with a profound space for individual expression and a sense of collective belonging but also introduces other challenges into their social lives. Recently, the field of music sociology has proposed a more diverse perspective to observe and analyse the intricate role of music for individuals and society. In this context, regarding Chinese indie music lovers with niche music preferences, how their indie music practices integrate into their social lives and how they navigate their niche music tastes have become worthwhile topics of exploration.
Drawing on interviews with 31 Chinese indie music lovers and extensive online ethnography, this thesis investigates how Chinese indie music lovers comprehend and engage with indie music, and how the power of indie music shapes them and their social behaviours.
I employ the theoretical framework of ‘music in action’ (Hennion, 2001; DeNora, 2011, 2016) and symbolic interactionism (Mead, 1934; Goffman, 1959; Blumer, 1969) to examine the dynamic and multifaceted roles of indie music in the social lives of Chinese indie music lovers. I develop a concept of ‘music socialising’ to delve into several key aspects of music lovers’ social practices. I contend that through various forms of musical activities such as music selection, live music attendance, and digital practices, indie music lovers exhibit strategic and reflexive characteristics in their music practices. These practices actively contribute to constructing and maintaining self and identity, negotiating social ties, and forming and mediating collectivity within a broader social landscape. It is through these processes that the music practices of Chinese indie music lovers are endowed with meanings, thereby shaping their social reality. This thesis presents a rich and nuanced picture of the social experiences of Chinese indie music lovers, uncovering the transformative power of their indie music practices. It presents a compelling argument for the significance of music as a social agency, highlighting the complex interactions between music, individuals, and society. By bridging theoretical insights with rich empirical data, this thesis contributes to our understanding of the socio-cultural dimensions of music, offering fresh perspectives on the role of indie music in contemporary Chinese society

Cerebral Metamorphopsia: Perceived spatial distortion from lesions of the adult human central visual pathway
Metamorphopsia is the perceived visual illusion of spatial distortion. Cerebral causes of metamorphopsia are much less common than retinal or ocular causes. Cerebral metamorphopsia can be caused by lesions along the central visual pathway or as a manifestation of epileptogenic discharges. Geometric visual distortions may result from structural lesions of the central visual pathway after reorganisation of the retinotopic representation in the cortex. Very few experimental investigations have been performed regarding cerebral metamorphopsia as it is often viewed as a clinical curiousity and analysis of the perceived distortion is difficult due to its subjective nature. Investigations have been undertaken to understand cortical plasticity as an explanation for visual filling-in. There has been much interest in cortical reorganisation after injuries to the peripheral and central visual pathway. Behavioural experiments aimed at quantifying the possible visual spatial distortion surrounding homonymous paracentral scotomas may be able to demonstrate cortical reorganisation after brain-damage and provide clues regarding the neural processes of visual perception.
The aims of the thesis are:
1. To identify which cases of metamorphopsia, both published and unpublished, might be a consequence of cortical spatial reorganisation of retinotopic projections.
2. To investigate perceptual spatial distortion surrounding homonymous paracentral scotomas in adults with isolated unilateral injuries of the striate cortex.
A review of the literature describing cases of cerebral metamorphopsia was performed. Metamorphopsia caused by retinal or ocular pathology, psychiatric conditions, drugs or medications were excluded. A retrospective case series of eight patients with metamorphopsia from a cerebral cause was performed in two clinical neurology practices specialising in vision disorders. Two cases who suffered from paracentral homonymous scotomas due to isolated unilateral primary visual cortex (V1) lesions were identified from a Neuro-ophthalmology practice. Neuropsychophysical experiments to investigate visual spatial perception surrounding their scotomas were developed and tested using MATLAB and Psychtoolbox.
The use of the term 'metamorphopsia' was only in reference to cases in which contours or lines were experienced as distorted. In the published literature, few cases of cerebral metamorphopsia have been identified as being potentially due to cortical reorganisation. The main result is a statistically significant visual spatial distortion in the visual field surrounding a paracentral homonymous scotoma when compared to a normal control. There is also significant distortion of perception in the subjects' "unaffected" visual hemifield.
After lesions of V1, visual perceptual spatial distortions may occur in the visual field surrounding homonymous paracentral scotomas. The spatial distortion may also occur in the normal hemifield possibly due to long-range cortical connections crossing to the other hemisphere through the corpus callosum. A collaborative approach across disciplines within vision science is required to further investigate the mechanisms responsible for perceptual visual illusions. Behavioural testing in brain-damaged cases remains important in developing theories of normal visual processing. New neuroimaging and neuroscience techniques could then test these theories, furthering our understanding of visual perception. An understanding of normal visual perception could allow future modification of neuronal processes to harness cortical reorganisation and potentially restore functional vision in humans with lesions of the central visual pathway
Artificial Intelligence and International Conflict in Cyberspace
This edited volume explores how artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming international conflict in cyberspace. Over the past three decades, cyberspace developed into a crucial frontier and issue of international conflict. However, scholarly work on the relationship between AI and conflict in cyberspace has been produced along somewhat rigid disciplinary boundaries and an even more rigid sociotechnical divide – wherein technical and social scholarship are seldomly brought into a conversation. This is the first volume to address these themes through a comprehensive and cross-disciplinary approach. With the intent of exploring the question ‘what is at stake with the use of automation in international conflict in cyberspace through AI?’, the chapters in the volume focus on three broad themes, namely: (1) technical and operational, (2) strategic and geopolitical and (3) normative and legal. These also constitute the three parts in which the chapters of this volume are organised, although these thematic sections should not be considered as an analytical or a disciplinary demarcation
Exploring space situational awareness using neuromorphic event-based cameras
The orbits around earth are a limited natural resource and one that hosts a vast range of vital space-based systems that support international systems use by both commercial industries, civil organisations, and national defence. The availability of this space resource is rapidly depleting due to the ever-growing presence of space debris and rampant overcrowding, especially in the limited and highly desirable slots in geosynchronous orbit. The field of Space Situational Awareness encompasses tasks aimed at mitigating these hazards to on-orbit systems through the monitoring of satellite traffic. Essential to this task is the collection of accurate and timely observation data. This thesis explores the use of a novel sensor paradigm to optically collect and process sensor data to enhance and improve space situational awareness tasks. Solving this issue is critical to ensure that we can continue to utilise the space environment in a sustainable way. However, these tasks pose significant engineering challenges that involve the detection and characterisation of faint, highly distant, and high-speed targets. Recent advances in neuromorphic engineering have led to the availability of high-quality neuromorphic event-based cameras that provide a promising alternative to the conventional cameras used in space imaging. These cameras offer the potential to improve the capabilities of existing space tracking systems and have been shown to detect and track satellites or ‘Resident Space Objects’ at low data rates, high temporal resolutions, and in conditions typically unsuitable for conventional optical cameras. This thesis presents a thorough exploration of neuromorphic event-based cameras for space situational awareness tasks and establishes a rigorous foundation for event-based space imaging. The work conducted in this project demonstrates how to enable event-based space imaging systems that serve the goals of space situational awareness by providing accurate and timely information on the space domain. By developing and implementing event-based processing techniques, the asynchronous operation, high temporal resolution, and dynamic range of these novel sensors are leveraged to provide low latency target acquisition and rapid reaction to challenging satellite tracking scenarios. The algorithms and experiments developed in this thesis successfully study the properties and trade-offs of event-based space imaging and provide comparisons with traditional observing methods and conventional frame-based sensors. The outcomes of this thesis demonstrate the viability of event-based cameras for use in tracking and space imaging tasks and therefore contribute to the growing efforts of the international space situational awareness community and the development of the event-based technology in astronomy and space science applications
The European Experience: A Multi-Perspective History of Modern Europe, 1500–2000
The European Experience brings together the expertise of nearly a hundred historians from eight European universities to internationalise and diversify the study of modern European history, exploring a grand sweep of time from 1500 to 2000. Offering a valuable corrective to the Anglocentric narratives of previous English-language textbooks, scholars from all over Europe have pooled their knowledge on comparative themes such as identities, cultural encounters, power and citizenship, and economic development to reflect the complexity and heterogeneous nature of the European experience. Rather than another grand narrative, the international author teams offer a multifaceted and rich perspective on the history of the continent of the past 500 years. Each major theme is dissected through three chronological sub-chapters, revealing how major social, political and historical trends manifested themselves in different European settings during the early modern (1500–1800), modern (1800–1900) and contemporary period (1900–2000). This resource is of utmost relevance to today’s history students in the light of ongoing internationalisation strategies for higher education curricula, as it delivers one of the first multi-perspective and truly ‘European’ analyses of the continent’s past.
