Advances in Learning Bayesian Networks of Bounded Treewidth
This work presents novel algorithms for learning Bayesian network structures
with bounded treewidth. Both exact and approximate methods are developed. The
exact method combines mixed-integer linear programming formulations for
structure learning and treewidth computation. The approximate method consists
in uniformly sampling -trees (maximal graphs of treewidth ), and
subsequently selecting, exactly or approximately, the best structure whose
moral graph is a subgraph of that -tree. Some properties of these methods
are discussed and proven. The approaches are empirically compared to each other
and to a state-of-the-art method for learning bounded treewidth structures on a
collection of public data sets with up to 100 variables. The experiments show
that our exact algorithm outperforms the state of the art, and that the

Dynamic Range Majority Data Structures
Given a set of coloured points on the real line, we study the problem of
answering range -majority (or "heavy hitter") queries on . More
specifically, for a query range , we want to return each colour that is
assigned to more than an -fraction of the points contained in . We
present a new data structure for answering range -majority queries on a
dynamic set of points, where . Our data structure uses O(n)
space, supports queries in time, and updates in amortized time. If the coordinates of the points are integers,
then the query time can be improved to . For constant values of , this improved query
time matches an existing lower bound, for any data structure with
polylogarithmic update time. We also generalize our data structure to handle
sets of points in d-dimensions, for , as well as dynamic arrays, in

On the Complexity of Searching in Trees: Average-case Minimization
We focus on the average-case analysis: A function w : V -> Z+ is given which
defines the likelihood for a node to be the one marked, and we want the
strategy that minimizes the expected number of queries. Prior to this paper,
very little was known about this natural question and the complexity of the
problem had remained so far an open question.
We close this question and prove that the above tree search problem is
NP-complete even for the class of trees with diameter at most 4. This results
in a complete characterization of the complexity of the problem with respect to
the diameter size. In fact, for diameter not larger than 3 the problem can be
shown to be polynomially solvable using a dynamic programming approach.
In addition we prove that the problem is NP-complete even for the class of
trees of maximum degree at most 16. To the best of our knowledge, the only
known result in this direction is that the tree search problem is solvable in
O(|V| log|V|) time for trees with degree at most 2 (paths).
We match the above complexity results with a tight algorithmic analysis. We
first show that a natural greedy algorithm attains a 2-approximation.
Furthermore, for the bounded degree instances, we show that any optimal
strategy (i.e., one that minimizes the expected number of queries) performs at
most O(\Delta(T) (log |V| + log w(T))) queries in the worst case, where w(T) is
the sum of the likelihoods of the nodes of T and \Delta(T) is the maximum
degree of T. We combine this result with a non-trivial exponential time
algorithm to provide an FPTAS for trees with bounded degree
Fine-Grained Complexity Analysis of Two Classic TSP Variants
We analyze two classic variants of the Traveling Salesman Problem using the
toolkit of fine-grained complexity. Our first set of results is motivated by
the Bitonic TSP problem: given a set of points in the plane, compute a
shortest tour consisting of two monotone chains. It is a classic
dynamic-programming exercise to solve this problem in time. While the
near-quadratic dependency of similar dynamic programs for Longest Common
Subsequence and Discrete Frechet Distance has recently been proven to be
essentially optimal under the Strong Exponential Time Hypothesis, we show that
bitonic tours can be found in subquadratic time. More precisely, we present an
algorithm that solves bitonic TSP in time and its bottleneck
version in time. Our second set of results concerns the popular
-OPT heuristic for TSP in the graph setting. More precisely, we study the
-OPT decision problem, which asks whether a given tour can be improved by a
-OPT move that replaces edges in the tour by new edges. A simple
algorithm solves -OPT in time for fixed . For 2-OPT, this is
easily seen to be optimal. For we prove that an algorithm with a runtime
of the form exists if and only if All-Pairs
Shortest Paths in weighted digraphs has such an algorithm. The results for
may suggest that the actual time complexity of -OPT is
. We show that this is not the case, by presenting an algorithm
that finds the best -move in time for
fixed . This implies that 4-OPT can be solved in time,
matching the best-known algorithm for 3-OPT. Finally, we show how to beat the
quadratic barrier for in two important settings, namely for points in the
