    Logistic Service Providers (LSPs) o ering hinterland transportation face the trade-o between e ciently using the capacity of long-haul vehicles and minimizing the rst and last-mile costs. To achieve the optimal trade-o , freights have to be consolidated considering the variation in the arrival of freight and their characteristics, the applicable transportation restrictions, and the interdependence of decisions over time. We propose the use of a Markov model and an Approximate Dynamic Programming (ADP) algorithm to consolidate the right freights in such transportation settings. Our model incorporates probabilistic knowledge of the arrival of freights and their characteristics, as well as generic de finitions of transportation restrictions and costs. Using small test instances, we show that our ADP solution provides accurate approximations to the optimal solution of the Markov model. Using a larger problem instance, we show that our modeling approach has signi cant bene ts when compared to common-practice heuristic approaches

    Less-than-truckload is a transport modality that includes many practical variations to convey a number of transportation-requests from the origin locations to their destinations by using the possibility of goods-transshipments on the carrier?s terminals-network. In this way logistics companies are required to consolidate shipments from different suppliers in the outbound vehicles at a terminal of the network. We present a methodology for finding near-optimal solutions to a less-than-truckload shipping modality used for cargo consolidation and distribution through a terminals-network.     Road freight logistics, competition, and innovation : downstream benefits and policy implications

    This empirical paper sheds light on a significant element of the debate of whether infrastructure services have a strong impact on economic development by exploring the impact of innovative road freight services on downstream business users. The paper uses a new and purpose-specific survey of 165 logistics service providers and 493 user enterprises in food processing, food distribution, and the automotive industry in the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland. The main findings are that there are substantial downstream benefits from innovations in road freight services, both dampening cost increases and raising sales revenues of business users. The additional finding that increased intensity of competition in road freight services is significantly associated with the provision of innovative services suggests that easing any remaining barriers to competition in upstream business sectors should be a priority.Municipal Financial Management,ICT Policy and Strategies,Private Participation in Infrastructure,Business in Development,Business Environment
