    The What and Why of Binding: The Modeler's Perspective

    In attempts to formulate a computational understanding of brain function, one of the fundamental concerns is the data structure by which the brain represents information. For many decades, a conceptual framework has dominated the thinking of both brain modelers and neurobiologists. That framework is referred to here as "classical neural networks." It is well supported by experimental data, although it may be incomplete. A characterization of this framework will be offered in the next section. Difficulties in modeling important functional aspects of the brain on the basis of classical neural networks alone have led to the recognition that another, general mechanism must be invoked to explain brain function. That mechanism I call "binding." Binding by neural signal synchrony had been mentioned several times in the liter ature (Lege´ndy, 1970; Milner, 1974) before it was fully formulated as a general phenomenon (von der Malsburg, 1981). Although experimental evidence for neural syn chrony was soon found, the idea was largely ignored for many years. Only recently has it become a topic of animated discussion. In what follows, I will summarize the nature and the roots of the idea of binding, especially of temporal binding, and will discuss some of the objec tions raised against it

    Integrated plasticity at inhibitory and excitatory synapses in the cerebellar circuit

    The way long-term potentiation (LTP) and depression (LTD) are integrated within the different synapses of brain neuronal circuits is poorly understood. In order to progress beyond the identification of specific molecular mechanisms, a system in which multiple forms of plasticity can be correlated with large-scale neural processing is required. In this paper we take as an example the cerebellar network, in which extensive investigations have revealed LTP and LTD at several excitatory and inhibitory synapses. Cerebellar LTP and LTD occur in all three main cerebellar subcircuits (granular layer, molecular layer, deep cerebellar nuclei) and correspondingly regulate the function of their three main neurons: granule cells (GrCs), Purkinje cells (PCs) and deep cerebellar nuclear (DCN) cells. All these neurons, in addition to be excited, are reached by feed-forward and feed-back inhibitory connections, in which LTP and LTD may either operate synergistically or homeostatically in order to control information flow through the circuit. Although the investigation of individual synaptic plasticities in vitro is essential to prove their existence and mechanisms, it is insufficient to generate a coherent view of their impact on network functioning in vivo. Recent computational models and cell-specific genetic mutations in mice are shedding light on how plasticity at multiple excitatory and inhibitory synapses might regulate neuronal activities in the cerebellar circuit and contribute to learning and memory and behavioral control.This work was supported by European Union grants to ED [CEREBNETFP7-ITN238686, REAL NET FP7-ICT270434, Human Brain Project(HBP-604102)] and by Centro Fermi grant [13(14)] to LM

    A neuroanatomically grounded Hebbian-learning model of attention–language interactions in the human brain

    Meaningful familiar stimuli and senseless unknown materials lead to different patterns of brain activation. A late major neurophysiological response indexing ‘sense’ is the negative component of event-related potential peaking at around 400 ms (N400), an event-related potential that emerges in attention-demanding tasks and is larger for senseless materials (e.g. meaningless pseudowords) than for matched meaningful stimuli (words). However, the mismatch negativity (latency 100–250 ms), an early automatic brain response elicited under distraction, is larger to words than to pseudowords, thus exhibiting the opposite pattern to that seen for the N400. So far, no theoretical account has been able to reconcile and explain these findings by means of a single, mechanistic neural model. We implemented a neuroanatomically grounded neural network model of the left perisylvian language cortex and simulated: (i) brain processes of early language acquisition and (ii) cortical responses to familiar word and senseless pseudoword stimuli. We found that variation of the area-specific inhibition (the model correlate of attention) modulated the simulated brain response to words and pseudowords, producing either an N400- or a mismatch negativity-like response depending on the amount of inhibition (i.e. available attentional resources). Our model: (i) provides a unifying explanatory account, at cortical level, of experimental observations that, so far, had not been given a coherent interpretation within a single framework; (ii) demonstrates the viability of purely Hebbian, associative learning in a multilayered neural network architecture; and (iii) makes clear predictions on the effects of attention on latency and magnitude of event-related potentials to lexical items.     The re-education of upper limb movement post stroke using iterative learning control mediated by electrical stimulation

    An inability to perform tasks involving reaching is a common problem following stroke. Evidence supports the use of robotic therapy and electrical stimulation (ES) to reduce upper limb impairments following stroke, but current systems may not encourage maximal voluntary contribution from the participant. This study developed and tested iterative learning control (ILC) algorithms mediated by ES, using a purpose designed robotic workstation, for upper limb rehabilitation post stroke. Surface electromyography (EMG) which may be related to impaired performance and function was used to investigate seven shoulder and elbow muscle activation patterns in eight neurologically intact and five chronic stroke participants during nine tracking tasks. The participants’ forearm was supported using a hinged arm-holder, which constrained their hand to move in a two dimensional horizontal plane.Outcome measures taken prior to and after an intervention consisted of the Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA) and the Action Research Arm Test (ARAT), isometric force and error tracking. The intervention for stroke participants consisted of eighteen sessions in which a similar range of tracking tasks were performed with the addition of responsive electrical stimulation to their triceps muscle. A question set was developed to understand participants’ perceptions of the ILC system. Statistically significant improvements were measured (p?0.05) in: FMA motor score, unassisted tracking, and in isometric force. Statistically significant differences in muscle activation patterns were observed between stroke and neurologically intact participants for timing, amplitude and coactivation patterns. After the intervention significant changes were observed in many of these towards neurologically intact ranges. The robot–assisted therapy was well accepted and tolerated by the stroke participants. This study has demonstrated the feasibility of using ILC mediated by ES for upper limb stroke rehabilitation in the treatment of stroke patients with upper limb hemiplegia

    Binaural sound source localization using machine learning with spiking neural networks features extraction

    Human and animal binaural hearing systems are able take advantage of a variety of cues to localise sound-sources in a 3D space using only two sensors. This work presents a bionic system that utilises aspects of binaural hearing in an automated source localisation task. A head and torso emulator (KEMAR) are used to acquire binaural signals and a spiking neural network is used to compare signals from the two sensors. The firing rates of coincidence-neurons in the spiking neural network model provide information as to the location of a sound source. Previous methods have used a winner-takesall approach, where the location of the coincidence-neuron with the maximum firing rate is used to indicate the likely azimuth and elevation. This was shown to be accurate for single sources, but when multiple sources are present the accuracy significantly reduces. To improve the robustness of the methodology, an alternative approach is developed where the spiking neural network is used as a feature pre-processor. The firing rates of all coincidence-neurons are then used as inputs to a Machine Learning model which is trained to predict source location for both single and multiple sources. A novel approach that applied spiking neural networks as a binaural feature extraction method was presented. These features were processed using deep neural networks to localise multisource sound signals that were emitted from different locations. Results show that the proposed bionic binaural emulator can accurately localise sources including multiple and complex sources to 99% correctly predicted angles from single-source localization model and 91% from multi-source localization model. The impact of background noise on localisation performance has also been investigated and shows significant degradation of performance. The multisource localization model was trained with multi-condition background noise at SNRs of 10dB, 0dB, and -10dB and tested at controlled SNRs. The findings demonstrate an enhancement in the model performance in compared with noise free training data
