Hierarchical Dynamic Loop Self-Scheduling on Distributed-Memory Systems Using an MPI+MPI Approach
Computationally-intensive loops are the primary source of parallelism in
scientific applications. Such loops are often irregular and a balanced
execution of their loop iterations is critical for achieving high performance.
However, several factors may lead to an imbalanced load execution, such as
problem characteristics, algorithmic, and systemic variations. Dynamic loop
self-scheduling (DLS) techniques are devised to mitigate these factors, and
consequently, improve application performance. On distributed-memory systems,
DLS techniques can be implemented using a hierarchical master-worker execution
model and are, therefore, called hierarchical DLS techniques. These techniques
self-schedule loop iterations at two levels of hardware parallelism: across and
within compute nodes. Hybrid programming approaches that combine the message
passing interface (MPI) with open multi-processing (OpenMP) dominate the
implementation of hierarchical DLS techniques. The MPI-3 standard includes the
feature of sharing memory regions among MPI processes. This feature introduced
the MPI+MPI approach that simplifies the implementation of parallel scientific
applications. The present work designs and implements hierarchical DLS
techniques by exploiting the MPI+MPI approach. Four well-known DLS techniques
are considered in the evaluation proposed herein. The results indicate certain
performance advantages of the proposed approach compared to the hybrid
MPI+OpenMP approach

Fault tolerance in super-scalar and VLIW processors
In this paper, we present a method for utilizing the spare capacity in super-scalar and very long instruction word (VLIW) processors to tolerate functional unit failures. Unlike previous work that was primarily interested in detection of transient faults, we are concerned with more permanent and/or intermittent faults which necessitate processor reconfiguration. Our method utilizes the VLIW compiler or the superscalar scheduler to insert redundant operations whenever idle functional units exist. The results of these redundant operations are used to detect and diagnose functional unit failures. For super-scalar processors, the scheduler can then utilize this information to ensure that operations are performed only on non-faulty units. In VLIW processors, this is equivalent to recompiling the code to run on the remaining non-faulty functional units. Since in certain applications, recompilation may not be possible, we consider two alternative reconfiguration strategies for VLIW processors. These strategies sacrifice storage space and execution time, respectively, in order to reconfigure without recompiling. We present Markov models that describe the behavior of processors using these different approaches and we evaluate their reliabilities. The results show that, while super-scalar and VLIW with recompilation provide the highest reliability, all proposed strategies significantly increase reliability over that of an unprotected processor
Distributed data cache designs for clustered VLIW processors
Wire delays are a major concern for current and forthcoming processors. One approach to deal with this problem is to divide the processor into semi-independent units referred to as clusters. A cluster usually consists of a local register file and a subset of the functional units, while the L1 data cache typically remains centralized in What we call partially distributed architectures. However, as technology evolves, the relative latency of such a centralized cache will increase, leading to an important impact on performance. In this paper, we propose partitioning the L1 data cache among clusters for clustered VLIW processors. We refer to this kind of design as fully distributed processors. In particular; we propose and evaluate three different configurations: a snoop-based cache coherence scheme, a word-interleaved cache, and flexible LO-buffers managed by the compiler. For each alternative, instruction scheduling techniques targeted to cyclic code are developed. Results for the Mediabench suite'show that the performance of such fully distributed architectures is always better than the performance of a partially distributed one with the same amount of resources. Survey on Combinatorial Register Allocation and Instruction Scheduling
Register allocation (mapping variables to processor registers or memory) and
instruction scheduling (reordering instructions to increase instruction-level
parallelism) are essential tasks for generating efficient assembly code in a
compiler. In the last three decades, combinatorial optimization has emerged as
an alternative to traditional, heuristic algorithms for these two tasks.
Combinatorial optimization approaches can deliver optimal solutions according
to a model, can precisely capture trade-offs between conflicting decisions, and
are more flexible at the expense of increased compilation time.
This paper provides an exhaustive literature review and a classification of
combinatorial optimization approaches to register allocation and instruction
scheduling, with a focus on the techniques that are most applied in this
context: integer programming, constraint programming, partitioned Boolean
quadratic programming, and enumeration. Researchers in compilers and
combinatorial optimization can benefit from identifying developments, trends,
and challenges in the area; compiler practitioners may discern opportunities
and grasp the potential benefit of applying combinatorial optimization
Efficient Generation of Parallel Spin-images Using Dynamic Loop Scheduling
High performance computing (HPC) systems underwent a significant increase in
their processing capabilities. Modern HPC systems combine large numbers of
homogeneous and heterogeneous computing resources. Scalability is, therefore,
an essential aspect of scientific applications to efficiently exploit the
massive parallelism of modern HPC systems. This work introduces an efficient
version of the parallel spin-image algorithm (PSIA), called EPSIA. The PSIA is
a parallel version of the spin-image algorithm (SIA). The (P)SIA is used in
various domains, such as 3D object recognition, categorization, and 3D face
recognition. EPSIA refers to the extended version of the PSIA that integrates
various well-known dynamic loop scheduling (DLS) techniques. The present work:
(1) Proposes EPSIA, a novel flexible version of PSIA; (2) Showcases the
benefits of applying DLS techniques for optimizing the performance of the PSIA;
(3) Assesses the performance of the proposed EPSIA by conducting several
scalability experiments. The performance results are promising and show that
using well-known DLS techniques, the performance of the EPSIA outperforms the
performance of the PSIA by a factor of 1.2 and 2 for homogeneous and
heterogeneous computing resources, respectively
A Parallel Adaptive P3M code with Hierarchical Particle Reordering
We discuss the design and implementation of HYDRA_OMP a parallel
implementation of the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics-Adaptive P3M (SPH-AP3M)
code HYDRA. The code is designed primarily for conducting cosmological
hydrodynamic simulations and is written in Fortran77+OpenMP. A number of
optimizations for RISC processors and SMP-NUMA architectures have been
implemented, the most important optimization being hierarchical reordering of
particles within chaining cells, which greatly improves data locality thereby
removing the cache misses typically associated with linked lists. Parallel
scaling is good, with a minimum parallel scaling of 73% achieved on 32 nodes
for a variety of modern SMP architectures. We give performance data in terms of
the number of particle updates per second, which is a more useful performance
metric than raw MFlops. A basic version of the code will be made available to

Feedback and time are essential for the optimal control of computing systems
The performance, reliability, cost, size and energy usage of computing systems can be improved by one or more orders of magnitude by the systematic use of modern control and optimization methods. Computing systems rely on the use of feedback algorithms to schedule tasks, data and resources, but the models that are used to design these algorithms are validated using open-loop metrics. By using closed-loop metrics instead, such as the gap metric developed in the control community, it should be possible to develop improved scheduling algorithms and computing systems that have not been over-engineered. Furthermore, scheduling problems are most naturally formulated as constraint satisfaction or mathematical optimization problems, but these are seldom implemented using state of the art numerical methods, nor do they explicitly take into account the fact that the scheduling problem itself takes time to solve. This paper makes the case that recent results in real-time model predictive control, where optimization problems are solved in order to control a process that evolves in time, are likely to form the basis of scheduling algorithms of the future. We therefore outline some of the research problems and opportunities that could arise by explicitly considering feedback and time when designing optimal scheduling algorithms for computing systems
