    Static/Dynamic Filtering for Mesh Geometry

    The joint bilateral filter, which enables feature-preserving signal smoothing according to the structural information from a guidance, has been applied for various tasks in geometry processing. Existing methods either rely on a static guidance that may be inconsistent with the input and lead to unsatisfactory results, or a dynamic guidance that is automatically updated but sensitive to noises and outliers. Inspired by recent advances in image filtering, we propose a new geometry filtering technique called static/dynamic filter, which utilizes both static and dynamic guidances to achieve state-of-the-art results. The proposed filter is based on a nonlinear optimization that enforces smoothness of the signal while preserving variations that correspond to features of certain scales. We develop an efficient iterative solver for the problem, which unifies existing filters that are based on static or dynamic guidances. The filter can be applied to mesh face normals followed by vertex position update, to achieve scale-aware and feature-preserving filtering of mesh geometry. It also works well for other types of signals defined on mesh surfaces, such as texture colors. Extensive experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed filter for various geometry processing applications such as mesh denoising, geometry feature enhancement, and texture color filtering

    Practical quality control tools for curves and surfaces

    Curves (geometry) and surfaces created by Computer Aided Geometric Design systems in the engineering environment must satisfy two basic quality criteria: the geometric shape must have the desired engineering properties; and the objects must be parameterized in a way which does not cause computational difficulty for geometric processing and engineering analysis.     MeshPipe: a Python-based tool for easy automation and demonstration of geometry processing pipelines

    The popularization of inexpensive 3D scanning, 3D printing, 3D publishing and AR/VR display technologies have renewed the interest in open-source tools providing the geometry processing algorithms required to clean, repair, enrich, optimize and modify point-based and polygonal-based models. Nowadays, there is a large variety of such open-source tools whose user community includes 3D experts but also 3D enthusiasts and professionals from other disciplines. In this paper we present a Python-based tool that addresses two major caveats of current solutions: the lack of easy-to-use methods for the creation of custom geometry processing pipelines (automation), and the lack of a suitable visual interface for quickly testing, comparing and sharing different pipelines, supporting rapid iterations and providing dynamic feedback to the user (demonstration). From the user's point of view, the tool is a 3D viewer with an integrated Python console from which internal or external Python code can be executed. We provide an easy-to-use but powerful API for element selection and geometry processing. Key algorithms are provided by a high-level C library exposed to the viewer via Python-C bindings. Unlike competing open-source alternatives, our tool has a minimal learning curve and typical pipelines can be written in a few lines of Python code.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Numerical implementation of the eXtended Finite Element Method for dynamic crack analysis

    A numerical implementation of the eXtended Finite Element Method (X-FEM) to analyze crack propagation in a structure under dynamic loading is presented in this paper. The arbitrary crack is treated by the X-FEM method without re-meshing but using an enrichment of the classical displacement-based finite element approximation in the framework of the partition of unity method. Several algorithms have been implemented, within an Oriented Object framework in C++, in the home made explicit FEM code. The new module, called DynaCrack, included in the dynamic FEM code DynELA, evaluates the crack geometry, the propagation of the crack and allow the post-processing of the numerical results. The module solves the system of discrete equations using an explicit integration scheme. Some numerical examples illustrating the main features and the computational efficiency of the DynaCrack module for dynamic crack propagation are presented in the last section of the paper

    Processing mesh animations: from static to dynamic geometry and back

    Static triangle meshes are the representation of choice for artificial objects, as well as for digital replicas of real objects. They have proven themselves to be a solid foundation for further processing. Although triangle meshes are handy in general, it may seem that their discrete approximation of reality is a downside. But in fact, the opposite is true. The approximation of the real object's shape remains the same, even if we willfully change the vertex positions in the mesh, which allows us to optimize it in this way. Due to modern acquisition methods, such a step is always beneficial, often even required, prior to further processing of the acquired triangle mesh. Therefore, we present a general framework for optimizing surface meshes with respect to various target criteria. Because of the simplicity and efficiency of the setup it can be adapted to a variety of applications. Although this framework was initially designed for single static meshes, the application to a set of meshes is straightforward. For example, we convert a set of meshes into compatible ones and use them as basis for creating dynamic geometry. Consequently, we propose an interpolation method which is able to produce visually plausible interpolation results, even if the compatible input meshes differ by large rotations. The method can be applied to any number of input vertex configurations and due to the utilization of a hierarchical scheme, the approach is fast and can be used for very large meshes. Furthermore, we consider the opposite direction. Given an animation sequence, we propose a pre-processing algorithm that considerably reduces the number of meshes required to describe the sequence, thus yielding a compact representation. Our method is based on a clustering and classification approach, which can be utilized to automatically find the most prominent meshes of the sequence. The original meshes can then be expressed as linear combinations of these few representative meshes with only small approximation errors. Finally, we investigate the shape space spanned by those few meshes and show how to apply different interpolation schemes to create other shape spaces, which are not based on vertex coordinates. We conclude with a careful analysis of these shape spaces and their usability for a compact representation of an animation sequence

    Mitigation of Through-Wall Distortions of Frontal Radar Images using Denoising Autoencoders

    Radar images of humans and other concealed objects are considerably distorted by attenuation, refraction and multipath clutter in indoor through-wall environments. While several methods have been proposed for removing target independent static and dynamic clutter, there still remain considerable challenges in mitigating target dependent clutter especially when the knowledge of the exact propagation characteristics or analytical framework is unavailable. In this work we focus on mitigating wall effects using a machine learning based solution -- denoising autoencoders -- that does not require prior information of the wall parameters or room geometry. Instead, the method relies on the availability of a large volume of training radar images gathered in through-wall conditions and the corresponding clean images captured in line-of-sight conditions. During the training phase, the autoencoder learns how to denoise the corrupted through-wall images in order to resemble the free space images. We have validated the performance of the proposed solution for both static and dynamic human subjects. The frontal radar images of static targets are obtained by processing wideband planar array measurement data with two-dimensional array and range processing. The frontal radar images of dynamic targets are simulated using narrowband planar array data processed with two-dimensional array and Doppler processing. In both simulation and measurement processes, we incorporate considerable diversity in the target and propagation conditions. Our experimental results, from both simulation and measurement data, show that the denoised images are considerably more similar to the free-space images when compared to the original through-wall images

    Motion from "X" by Compensating "Y"

    This paper analyzes the geometry of the visual motion estimation problem in relation to transformations of the input (images) that stabilize particular output functions such as the motion of a point, a line and a plane in the image. By casting the problem within the popular "epipolar geometry", we provide a common framework for including constraints such as point, line of plane fixation by just considering "slices" of the parameter manifold. The models we provide can be used for estimating motion from a batch using the preferred optimization techniques, or for defining dynamic filters that estimate motion from a causal sequence. We discuss methods for performing the necessary compensation by either controlling the support of the camera or by pre-processing the images. The compensation algorithms may be used also for recursively fitting a plane in 3-D both from point-features or directly from brightness. Conversely, they may be used for estimating motion relative to the plane independent of its parameters
