    Modelling of a rope-free passenger transportation system for active cabin vibration damping

    Conventional vertical passenger transportation is performed by lifts. Conventional traction-drive electrical lifts use ropes to transfer the rotational motion of an electrical motor into a vertical motion of the cabin. The vertical passenger transportation system discussed in this paper does not use any ropes, the motor directly provides a driving force, which moves the cabin. This new propulsion is realized through an electrical linear motor. The use of the linear motor requires a new design of the passenger transportation system (PTS), which includes reducing the weight of the car through lightweight construction. The reduced stiffness of the lightweight design renders the construction more vulnerable to vibrations. In order to improve ride quality of the transportation system it is necessary to develop new concepts to damp the vibrations. One way to increase stiffness characteristics of the system is to introduce active damping components to be used alongside passive damping components. It is essential to derive a dynamic model of the system in order to design and also later control these damping components in the best possible way. This paper describes the fundamental steps undertaken to derive a dynamic model for designing and controlling active damping components for the new type of vertical PTS. The model is derived as a Multi-Body System (MBS), where the connections between the bodies are modelled as spring damper elements. The derivation of the MBS is demonstrated on a transportation system, consisting of three main components: a sledge, holding the rotor of the linear motor; a mounting frame, which is used to provide support for the cabin; and the actual cabin. The modelling of the propulsion system, thus the electrical part of the PTS, will not be the focus of this work

    Design analysis of short neutral section through dynamic modelling of performance

    PhD ThesisUK railway overhead line electrification employs a feature known as ‘short’ neutral section which uses insulators spliced into the contact wire to separate the electrical phases, and they are known as a cause of reliability problems. This research proposes to develop, validate and apply a hitherto unexplored approach to studying short neutral section behaviour. This research briefly initially examines the experience of British Rail with the introduction of the ceramic bead neutral section and its development during the 80s and 90s, and the subsequent introduction and development of a further proprietary type in the early 2000s, which is then assessed in detail. Using information from Network Rail, the significant failures of the main types of neutral sections are examined over a 10 year period for which adequate data exists. European practice is briefly examined. Current methods for analysing the interaction of pantograph and overhead lines are investigated, and the principles are adopted into a bespoke methodology implemented using proprietary software Ansys, rather than custom code as is current widespread practice. This methodology is constructed using finite element and multi-body principles and is successfully validated against ‘benchmarks’, in accordance with current European practice and standards. Mathematical models of a neutral section are constructed using their physical characteristics and data captured in lab tests, and the behaviour against real UK pantographs is simulated using this method. Findings are again successfully validated against real line test data. Using the result, the sensitivity of the neutral section performance to particular parameters of its construction is tested, allowing opportunities for optimisation to be identified, and improvements proposed, successfully demonstrating a (previously untried) validated methodology for examining the neutral section problem.     Writing or managing a scientific book, as it is known today, depends on a series of major activities, such as regrouping researchers, reviewing chapters, informing and exchanging with contributors, and at the very least, motivating them to achieve the objective of publication. The idea of this book arose from many years of work in biomechanics, health disease, and rehabilitation. Through exchanges with authors from several countries, we learned much from each other, and we decided with the publisher to transfer this knowledge to readers interested in the current understanding of the impact of biomechanics in the analysis of movement and its optimization. The main objective is to provide some interesting articles that show the scope of biomechanical analysis and technologies in human behavior tasks.
