Dynamic Arc-Flags in Road Networks
International audienceIn this work we introduce a new data structure, named Road-Signs, which allows us to efficiently update the Arc-Flags of a graph in a dynamic scenario. Road-Signs can be used to compute Arc-Flags, can be efficiently updated and do not require large space consumption for many real-world graphs like, e.g., graphs arising from road networks. In detail, we define an algorithm to preprocess Road-Signs and an algorithm to update them each time that a weight increase operation occurs on an edge of the network. We also experimentally analyze the proposed algorithms in real-world road networks showing that they yields a significant speed-up in the updating phase of Arc-Flags, at the cost of a very small space and time overhead in the preprocessing phase
Fully Dynamic Maintenance of Arc-Flags in Road Networks
International audienceThe problem of finding best routes in road networks can be solved by applying Dijkstra's shortest paths algorithm. Unfortunately, road networks deriving from real-world applications are huge yielding unsustainable times to compute shortest paths. For this reason, great research efforts have been done to accelerate Dijkstra's algorithm on road networks. These efforts have led to the development of a number of speed-up techniques, as for example Arc-Flags, whose aim is to compute additional data in a preprocessing phase in order to accelerate the shortest paths queries in an on-line phase. The main drawback of most of these techniques is that they do not work well in dynamic scenarios. In this paper we propose a new algorithm to update the Arc-Flags of a graph subject to edge weight decrease operations. To check the practical performances of the new algorithm we experimentally analyze it, along with a previously known algorithm for edge weight increase operations, on real-world road networks subject to fully dynamic sequences of operations. Our experiments show a significant speed-up in the updating phase of the Arc-Flags, at the cost of a small space and time overhead in the preprocessing phase
Route Planning in Transportation Networks
We survey recent advances in algorithms for route planning in transportation
networks. For road networks, we show that one can compute driving directions in
milliseconds or less even at continental scale. A variety of techniques provide
different trade-offs between preprocessing effort, space requirements, and
query time. Some algorithms can answer queries in a fraction of a microsecond,
while others can deal efficiently with real-time traffic. Journey planning on
public transportation systems, although conceptually similar, is a
significantly harder problem due to its inherent time-dependent and
multicriteria nature. Although exact algorithms are fast enough for interactive
queries on metropolitan transit systems, dealing with continent-sized instances
requires simplifications or heavy preprocessing. The multimodal route planning
problem, which seeks journeys combining schedule-based transportation (buses,
trains) with unrestricted modes (walking, driving), is even harder, relying on

Tractable Pathfinding for the Stochastic On-Time Arrival Problem
We present a new and more efficient technique for computing the route that
maximizes the probability of on-time arrival in stochastic networks, also known
as the path-based stochastic on-time arrival (SOTA) problem. Our primary
contribution is a pathfinding algorithm that uses the solution to the
policy-based SOTA problem---which is of pseudo-polynomial-time complexity in
the time budget of the journey---as a search heuristic for the optimal path. In
particular, we show that this heuristic can be exceptionally efficient in
practice, effectively making it possible to solve the path-based SOTA problem
as quickly as the policy-based SOTA problem. Our secondary contribution is the
extension of policy-based preprocessing to path-based preprocessing for the
SOTA problem. In the process, we also introduce Arc-Potentials, a more
efficient generalization of Stochastic Arc-Flags that can be used for both
policy- and path-based SOTA. After developing the pathfinding and preprocessing
algorithms, we evaluate their performance on two different real-world networks.
To the best of our knowledge, these techniques provide the most efficient
computation strategy for the path-based SOTA problem for general probability

Dynamic Time-Dependent Route Planning in Road Networks with User Preferences
There has been tremendous progress in algorithmic methods for computing
driving directions on road networks. Most of that work focuses on
time-independent route planning, where it is assumed that the cost on each arc
is constant per query. In practice, the current traffic situation significantly
influences the travel time on large parts of the road network, and it changes
over the day. One can distinguish between traffic congestion that can be
predicted using historical traffic data, and congestion due to unpredictable
events, e.g., accidents. In this work, we study the \emph{dynamic and
time-dependent} route planning problem, which takes both prediction (based on
historical data) and live traffic into account. To this end, we propose a
practical algorithm that, while robust to user preferences, is able to
integrate global changes of the time-dependent metric~(e.g., due to traffic
updates or user restrictions) faster than previous approaches, while allowing
subsequent queries that enable interactive applications
Arc-Flags in Dynamic Graphs
Computation of quickest paths has undergoing a rapid development in recent
years. It turns out that many high-performance route planning algorithms are
made up of several basic ingredients. However, not all of those ingredients have
been analyzed in a emph{dynamic} scenario where edge weights change after

Implementation and complexity of the watershed-from-markers algorithm computed as a minimal cost forest
The watershed algorithm belongs to classical algorithms in mathematical
morphology. Lotufo et al. published a principle of the watershed computation by
means of an Image Foresting Transform (IFT), which computes a shortest path
forest from given markers. The algorithm itself was described for a 2D case
(image) without a detailed discussion of its computation and memory demands for
real datasets. As IFT cleverly solves the problem of plateaus and as it gives
precise results when thin objects have to be segmented, it is obvious to use
this algorithm for 3D datasets taking in mind the minimizing of a higher memory
consumption for the 3D case without loosing low asymptotical time complexity of
O(m+C) (and also the real computation speed). The main goal of this paper is an
implementation of the IFT algorithm with a priority queue with buckets and
careful tuning of this implementation to reach as minimal memory consumption as
possible.
The paper presents five possible modifications and methods of implementation
of the IFT algorithm. All presented implementations keep the time complexity of
the standard priority queue with buckets but the best one minimizes the costly
memory allocation and needs only 19-45% of memory for typical 3D medical
imaging datasets. Memory saving was reached by an IFT algorithm simplification,
which stores more elements in temporary structures but these elements are
simpler and thus need less memory.
The best presented modification allows segmentation of large 3D medical
datasets (up to 512x512x680 voxels) with 12-or 16-bits per voxel on currently

Energy-Optimal Routes for Electric Vehicles
Abstract. We study the problem of electric vehicle route planning, where an important aspect is computing paths that minimize energy consumption. Thereby, any method must cope with specific properties, such as recuperation, battery constraints (over- and under-charging), and frequently changing cost functions (e. g., due to weather conditions). This work presents a practical algorithm that quickly computes energy-optimal routes for networks of continental scale. Exploiting multi-level overlay graphs [26, 31], we extend the Customizable Route Planning approach [8] to our scenario in a sound manner. This includes the efficient computation of profile queries and the adaption of bidirectional search to battery constraints. Our experimental study uses detailed consumption data measured from a production vehicle (Peugeot iOn). It reveals for the network of Europe that a new cost function can be incorporated in about five seconds, after which we answer random queries within 0.3ms on average. Additional evaluation on an artificial but realistic [22, 36] vehicle model with unlimited range demonstrates the excellent scalability of our algorithm: Even for long-range queries across Europe it achieves query times below 5ms on average—fast enough for interactive applications. Altogether, our algorithm exhibits faster query times than previous approaches, while improving (metric-dependent) preprocessing time by three orders of magnitude.
