    Precise motion descriptors extraction from stereoscopic footage using DaVinci DM6446

    A novel approach to extract target motion descriptors in multi-camera video surveillance systems is presented. Using two static surveillance cameras with partially overlapped field of view (FOV), control points (unique points from each camera) are identified in regions of interest (ROI) from both cameras footage. The control points within the ROI are matched for correspondence and a meshed Euclidean distance based signature is computed. A depth map is estimated using disparity of each control pair and the ROI is graded into number of regions with the help of relative depth information of the control points. The graded regions of different depths will help calculate accurately the pace of the moving target and also its 3D location. The advantage of estimating a depth map for background static control points over depth map of the target itself is its accuracy and robustness to outliers. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated in the paper using several test sequences. Implementation issues of the algorithm onto the TI DaVinci DM6446 platform are considered in the paper

    High-Efficient Parallel CAVLC Encoders on Heterogeneous Multicore Architectures

    This article presents two high-efficient parallel realizations of the context-based adaptive variable length coding (CAVLC) based on heterogeneous multicore processors. By optimizing the architecture of the CAVLC encoder, three kinds of dependences are eliminated or weaken, including the context-based data dependence, the memory accessing dependence and the control dependence. The CAVLC pipeline is divided into three stages: two scans, coding, and lag packing, and be implemented on two typical heterogeneous multicore architectures. One is a block-based SIMD parallel CAVLC encoder on multicore stream processor STORM. The other is a component-oriented SIMT parallel encoder on massively parallel architecture GPU. Both of them exploited rich data-level parallelism. Experiments results show that compared with the CPU version, more than 70 times of speedup can be obtained for STORM and over 50 times for GPU. The implementation of encoder on STORM can make a real-time processing for 1080p @30fps and GPU-based version can satisfy the requirements for 720p real-time encoding. The throughput of the presented CAVLC encoders is more than 10 times higher than that of published software encoders on DSP and multicore platforms

    Energy Optimization in Commercial FPGAs with Voltage, Frequency and Logic Scaling

    This paper investigates the energy reductions possible in commercially available FPGAs configured to support voltage, frequency and logic scalability combined with power gating. Voltage and frequency scaling is based on in-situ detectors that allow the device to detect valid working voltage and frequency pairs at run-time while logic scalability is achieved with partial dynamic reconfiguration. The considered devices are FPGA-processor hybrids with independent power domains fabricated in 28 nm process nodes. The test case is based on a number of operational scenarios in which the FPGA side is loaded with a motion estimation core that can be configured with a variable number of execution units. The results demonstrate that voltage scalability reduces power by up to 60 percent compared with nominal voltage operation at the same frequency. The energy analysis show that the most energy efficiency core configuration depends on the performance requirements. A low performance scenario shows that serial computation is more energy efficient than the parallel configuration while the opposite is true when the performance requirements increase.     Flight-testing of the self-repairing flight control system using the F-15 highly integrated digital electronic control flight research facility

    Flight tests conducted with the self-repairing flight control system (SRFCS) installed on the NASA F-15 highly integrated digital electronic control aircraft are described. The development leading to the current SRFCS configuration is highlighted. Key objectives of the program are outlined: (1) to flight-evaluate a control reconfiguration strategy with three types of control surface failure; (2) to evaluate a cockpit display that will inform the pilot of the maneuvering capacity of the damage aircraft; and (3) to flight-evaluate the onboard expert system maintenance diagnostics process using representative faults set to occur only under maneuvering conditions.
