    A Comprehensive Survey on Moving Networks

    The unprecedented increase in the demand for mobile data, fuelled by new emerging applications such as HD video streaming and heightened online activities has caused massive strain on the existing cellular networks. As a solution, the 5G technology has been introduced to improve network performance through various innovative features such as mmWave spectrum and HetNets. In essence, HetNets include several small cells underlaid within macro-cell to serve densely populated regions. Recently, a mobile layer of HetNet has been under consideration by the researchers and is often referred to as moving networks. Moving networks comprise of mobile cells that are primarily introduced to improve QoS for commuting users inside public transport because the QoS is deteriorated due to vehicular penetration losses. Furthermore, the users inside fast moving public transport also exert excessive load on the core network due to large group handovers. To this end, mobile cells will play a crucial role in reducing overall handover count and will help in alleviating these problems by decoupling in-vehicle users from the core network. To date, remarkable research results have been achieved by the research community in addressing challenges linked to moving networks. However, to the best of our knowledge, a discussion on moving networks in a holistic way is missing in the current literature. To fill the gap, in this paper, we comprehensively survey moving networks. We cover the technological aspects and their applications in the futuristic applications. We also discuss the use-cases and value additions that moving networks may bring to future cellular architecture and identify the challenges associated with them.     Network planning for the future railway communications

    Los Sistemas Inteligentes de Transporte están cambiando la forma en que concebimos el futuro de la movilidad. En particular, los ferrocarriles están experimentando un proceso de transformación para modernizar el transporte público y las operaciones ferroviarias. Tecnologías como el 5G, la fibra óptica y la nube han surgido como catalizadores para digitalizar el ferrocarril proporcionando comunicaciones de alta velocidad y baja latencia. Este TFG se centra en la exploración de redes que permitan el control del tren y la transmisión de datos a bordo. El objetivo es planificar la infraestructura de red (dimensionamiento y asignación de recursos) necesaria para las futuras comunicaciones del sistema ferroviario de larga distancia de la Deutsche Bahn en Alemania. En este trabajo, proponemos una arquitectura de red que puede satisfacer los requisitos de rendimiento de las aplicaciones para trenes y pasajeros. Presentamos un método para la colocación de estaciones base 5G a lo largo de las vías del tren para garantizar el rendimiento necesario en el borde de la celda. Por último, presentamos el problema de colocación y asignación de centros de datos. El objetivo es encontrar el número necesario de centros de datos y su ubicación en la red, y asignarlos a cada estación de tren. Realizamos simulaciones en cuatro escenarios diferentes, en los que modificamos parámetros de entrada como la latencia máxima tolerada y el número máximo de centros de datos. Los resultados obtenidos muestran el compromiso entre la latencia alcanzada y el coste de la infraestructura.Els Sistemes Intel·ligents de Transport estan canviant la manera en què concebem el futur de la mobilitat. Tecnologies com el 5G, la fibra òptica i el núvol han sorgit com a catalitzadors per digitalitzar el ferrocarril proporcionant comunicacions d'alta velocitat i baixa latència. Aquest TFG se centra en l'exploració de xarxes que permetin el control dels trens i la transmissió de dades a bord. L'objectiu és planificar la infraestructura de xarxa (dimensionament i assignació de recursos) necessària per a les futures comunicacions del sistema ferroviari de llarga distància de la Deutsche Bahn a Alemanya. En aquest treball, proposem una arquitectura de xarxa que pot satisfer els requisits de rendiment de les aplicacions per a trens i passatgers. Presentem un mètode per a la col·locació d'estacions base 5G al llarg de les vies del tren per garantir el rendiment necessari a la vora de la cel·la. Per últim, presentem el problema de col·locació i assignació de centres de dades. L'objectiu és trobar el nombre necessari de centres de dades i la seva ubicació a la xarxa, i assignar-los a cada estació de tren. Realitzem simulacions en quatre escenaris diferents, on modifiquem paràmetres d'entrada com la latència màxima tolerada i el nombre màxim de centres de dades. Els resultats obtinguts mostren el compromís entre la latència assolida i el cost de la infraestructura.Smart Transportation Systems are changing the way we conceive the future of mobility. In particular, railways are undergoing a transformation process to modernize public transportation and rail operation. Technologies like 5G, optical fiber and the cloud have emerged as catalysts to digitalize the railway by providing high-speed and low-latency communications. This bachelor's thesis focuses on the exploration of networks enabling train control and on-board data communications. The goal is to plan the network infrastructure (dimensioning and resource allocation) needed for the future communications in the train mobility scenario for Deutsche Bahn's long-distance railway system in Germany. In this work, we propose a network architecture that can meet the performance requirements of train and passenger applications. We present an approach for 5G base station placement along the rail tracks to guarantee the necessary throughput at the cell edge. Finally, we introduce the data center placement and assignment problem. The objective is to find the required number of data centers and their location in the network, and to assign them to each train station. We perform simulations in four different scenarios, in which we modify input parameters such as the maximum tolerated latency and the maximum number of data centers. The obtained results show the trade-off between the achieved latency and the infrastructure cost

    Separation Framework: An Enabler for Cooperative and D2D Communication for Future 5G Networks

    Soaring capacity and coverage demands dictate that future cellular networks need to soon migrate towards ultra-dense networks. However, network densification comes with a host of challenges that include compromised energy efficiency, complex interference management, cumbersome mobility management, burdensome signaling overheads and higher backhaul costs. Interestingly, most of the problems, that beleaguer network densification, stem from legacy networks' one common feature i.e., tight coupling between the control and data planes regardless of their degree of heterogeneity and cell density. Consequently, in wake of 5G, control and data planes separation architecture (SARC) has recently been conceived as a promising paradigm that has potential to address most of aforementioned challenges. In this article, we review various proposals that have been presented in literature so far to enable SARC. More specifically, we analyze how and to what degree various SARC proposals address the four main challenges in network densification namely: energy efficiency, system level capacity maximization, interference management and mobility management. We then focus on two salient features of future cellular networks that have not yet been adapted in legacy networks at wide scale and thus remain a hallmark of 5G, i.e., coordinated multipoint (CoMP), and device-to-device (D2D) communications. After providing necessary background on CoMP and D2D, we analyze how SARC can particularly act as a major enabler for CoMP and D2D in context of 5G. This article thus serves as both a tutorial as well as an up to date survey on SARC, CoMP and D2D.     Novel group handover mechanism for cooperative and coordinated mobile femtocells technology in railway environment

    Recently, the Mobile Femto (MF) Technology has been debated in many research papers to be a promising solution that will dominate future networks. This small cell technology plays a major role in supporting and maintaining network connectivity, enhancing the communication service as well as user experience for passengers in High-Speed Trains (HSTs) environments. Within the railway environment, there are many MF Technologies placed on HSTs to enhance the train passengers’ internet experience. Those users are more affected by the high penetration loss, path loss, dropped signals, and the unnecessary number of Handovers (HOs). Therefore, it is more appropriate to serve those mobile users by the in-train femtocell technology than being connected to the outside Access Points (APs) or Base Stations (BSs). Hence, having a series of MFs (called Cooperative and Coordinated MFs -CCMF) installed inside the train carriages has been seen to be a promising solution for train environments and future networks. The CCMF Technologies establish Backhaul (BH) links with the serving mother BS (DeNB). However, one of the main drawbacks in such an environment is the frequent and unnecessary number of HO procedures for the MFs and train passengers. Thus, this paper proposes an efficient Group HO mechanism that will improve signal connection and mitigate the impact of a signal outage when train carriages move from one serving cell to another. Unlike most work that uses Fixed Femtocell (FF) architecture, this work uses MF architecture. The achieved results via Matlab simulator show that the proposed HO scheme has achieved less outage probability of 0.055 when the distance between the MF and mobile users is less than 10 m compared to the signal outage probability of the conventional HO scheme. More results have shown that the dropping calls probability has been reduced when mobile users are connected to the MF compared to the direct transmission from the eNB. That is in turn has have improved the call duration of mobile UEs and reduced the dropping calls probability for mobile users who are connected to the MF compared to eNB direct connection UEs

    Interference management and system optimisation for Femtocells technology in LTE and future 4G/5G networks

    Femtocells are seen to be the future of Long Term Evaluation (LTE) networks to improve the performance of indoor, outdoor and cell edge User Equipments (UEs). These small cells work efficiently in areas that suffer from high penetration loss and path-loss to improve the coverage area. It is said that 30% of total served UEs in LTE networks are vehicular, which poses challenges in LTE networks due to their high mobility, high vehicular penetration loss (VPL), high path loss and high interference. Therefore, self-optimising and dynamic solutions are required to incorporate more intelligence into the current standard of LTE system. This makes the network more adaptive, able to handle peak data demands and cope with the increasing capacity for vehicular UEs. This research has drawn a performance comparison between vehicular UEs who are served by Mobile-Femto, Fixed-Femto and eNB under different VPL scales that range between highs and lows e.g. 0dB, 25dB and 40dB. Deploying Mobile-Femto under high VPLs has improved the vehicular UE Ergodic capacity by 1% and 5% under 25dB and 40dB VPL respectively as compared to other eNB technologies. A noticeable improvement is also seen in signal strength, throughput and spectral efficiency. Furthermore, this research discusses the co-channel interference between the eNB and the Mobile-Femto as both share the same resources and bandwidth. This has created an interference issue from the downlink signals of each other to their UEs. There were no previous solutions that worked efficiently in cases where UEs and base stations are mobile. Therefore, this research has adapted an efficient frequency reuse scheme that worked dynamically over distance and achieved improved results in the signal strength and throughput of Macro and Mobile-Femto UE as compared to previous interference management schemes e.g. Fractional Frequency Reuse factor1 (NoFFR-3) and Fractional Frequency Reuse factor3 (FFR-3). Also, the achieved results show that implementing the proposed handover scheme together with the Mobile-Femto deployment has reduced the dropped calls probability by 7% and the blocked calls probability by 14% compared to the direct transmission from the eNB. Furthermore, the outage signal probabilities under different VPLs have been reduced by 1.8% and 2% when the VPLs are 25dB and 40dB respectively compared to other eNB technologies

    High Speed Railway (HSR) provides its customers not only safety, security, comfort and on-time commuting, but also a fast transportation alternative to air travel or regular passenger rail services. Providing these benefits would not be possible without the tremendous growth and prevalence of wireless communication technologies. Due to advances in wireless communication systems, both trains and passengers are connected through high speed wireless networks to the Internet, data centers and railroad control centers. Railroad communities, academia, related industries and standards bodies, even the European Space Agency, are involved in advancing developments of HSR for highly connected train communication systems. The goal of these efforts is to provide the capabilities for uninterrupted high-speed fault-tolerant communication networks for all possible geographic, structural and weather conditions. This survey provides an overview of the current state-of-the-art and future trends for wireless technologies aiming to realize the concept of HSR communication services. Our goal is to highlight the challenges for these technologies, including GSM-R, Wi-Fi, WIMAX, LTE-R, RoF, LCX & Cognitive Radio, the offered solutions, their performance, and other related issues. Currently, providing HSR services is the goal of many countries across the globe. Europe, Japan & Taiwan, China, as well as North & South America have increased their efforts to advance HSR technologies to monitor and control not only the operations but also to deliver extensive broadband solutions to passengers. This survey determined a trend of the industry to transition control plane operations towards narrowband frequencies, i.e. LTE400/700, and to utilize concurrently other technologies for broadband access for passengers such that services of both user and train control systems are supported. With traditional technologies, a tradeoff was required and often favored train control services over passenger amenities. However, with the advances in communication systems, such as LTE-R and cognitive radios, it is becoming possible for system designers to offer rich services to passengers while also providing support for enhanced train control operations such as Positive Train Control

    QoS-aware User Association and Transmission Scheduling for Millimeter-Wave Train-ground Communications

    With the development of wireless communication, people have put forward higher requirements for train-ground communications in the high-speed railway (HSR) scenarios. With the help of mobile relays (MRs) installed on the roof of the train, the application of Millimeter-Wave (mm-wave) communication which has rich spectrum resources to the train-ground communication system can realize high data rate, so as to meet users' increasing demand for broad-band multimedia access. Also, full-duplex (FD) technology can theoretically double the spectral efficiency. In this paper, we formulate the user association and transmission scheduling problem in the mm-wave train-ground communication system with MR operating in the FD mode as a nonlinear programming problem. In order to maximize the system throughput and the number of users meeting quality of service (QoS) requirements, we propose an algorithm based on coalition game to solve the challenging NP-hard problem, and also prove the convergence and Nash-stable structure of the proposed algorithm. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that the proposed coalition game based algorithm can effectively improve the system throughput and meet the QoS requirements of as many users as possible, so that the communication system has a certain QoS awareness.Comment: 14 page
