Automated drowsiness detection for improved driving safety
Several approaches were proposed for the detection and prediction of drowsiness. The approaches can be categorized as estimating the fitness of duty, modeling the sleep-wake rhythms, measuring the vehicle based performance and online operator monitoring. Computer vision based online operator monitoring approach has become prominent due to its predictive ability of detecting drowsiness. Previous studies with this approach detect driver drowsiness primarily by making preassumptions about the relevant behavior, focusing on blink rate, eye closure, and yawning. Here we employ machine learning to datamine actual human behavior during drowsiness episodes. Automatic classifiers
for 30 facial actions from the Facial Action Coding system were developed
using machine learning on a separate database of spontaneous expressions. These facial actions include blinking and yawn motions, as well as a number of other facial movements. In addition, head motion was collected through automatic eye tracking and an accelerometer. These measures were passed to learning-based classifiers such as Adaboost and multinomial ridge regression. The system was able to predict sleep and crash episodes during a driving computer game with 96% accuracy within subjects and above 90% accuracy across subjects. This is the highest prediction rate reported to date for detecting real drowsiness. Moreover, the analysis revealed new information about human behavior during drowsy drivin

Detection of Driver Drowsiness and Distraction Using Computer Vision and Machine Learning Approaches
Drowsiness and distracted driving are leading factor in most car crashes and near-crashes. This research study explores and investigates the applications of both conventional computer vision and deep learning approaches for the detection of drowsiness and distraction in drivers.
In the first part of this MPhil research study conventional computer vision approaches was studied to develop a robust drowsiness and distraction system based on yawning detection, head pose detection and eye blinking detection. These algorithms were implemented by using existing human crafted features. Experiments were performed for the detection and classification with small image datasets to evaluate and measure the performance of system. It was observed that the use of human crafted features together with a robust classifier such as SVM gives better performance in comparison to previous approaches. Though, the results were satisfactorily, there are many drawbacks and challenges associated with conventional computer vision approaches, such as definition and extraction of human crafted features, thus making these conventional algorithms to be subjective in nature and less adaptive in practice.
In contrast, deep learning approaches automates the feature selection process and can be trained to learn the most discriminative features without any input from human. In the second half of this research study, the use of deep learning approaches for the detection of distracted driving was investigated. It was observed that one of the advantages of the applied methodology and technique for distraction detection includes and illustrates the contribution of CNN enhancement to a better pattern recognition accuracy and its ability to learn features from various regions of a human body simultaneously. The comparison of the performance of four convolutional deep net architectures (AlexNet, ResNet, MobileNet and NASNet) was carried out, investigated triplet training and explored the impact of combining a support vector classifier (SVC) with a trained deep net. The images used in our experiments with the deep nets are from the State Farm Distracted Driver Detection dataset hosted on Kaggle, each of which captures the entire body of a driver. The best results were obtained with the NASNet trained using triplet loss and combined with an SVC. It was observed that one of the advantages of deep learning approaches are their ability to learn discriminative features from various regions of a human body simultaneously. The ability has enabled deep learning approaches to reach accuracy at human level.
Drowsiness Classification for Internal Driving Situation Awareness on Mobile Platform
the sleeping driver is potentially more likely to cause an accident than the person who speeds up since the driver is the victim of sleepiness. Automobile industry researchers, including manufacturers, seek to solve this issue with various technical solutions that can avoid such a situation. This paper proposes an implementation of a lightweight method to detect driver's sleepiness using facial landmarks and head pose estimation based on neural network methodologies on a mobile device. We try to improve the accurateness by using face images that the camera detects and passes to CNN to identify sleepiness. Firstly, applied a behavioral landmark's sleepiness detection process. Then, an integrated Head Pose Estimation technique will strengthen the system's reliability. The preliminary findings of the tests demonstrate that with real-time capability, more than 86% identification accuracy can be reached in several real-world scenarios for all classes, including with glasses, without glasses, and light-dark background. This work aims to classify drowsiness, warn, and inform drivers, helping them to stop falling asleep at the wheel. The integrated CNN-based method is used to create a high accuracy and simple-to-use real-time driver drowsiness monitoring framework for embedded devices and Android phone
Embedded System Performance Analysis for Implementing a Portable Drowsiness Detection System for Drivers
Drowsiness on the road is a widespread problem with fatal consequences; thus,
a multitude of systems and techniques have been proposed. Among existing
methods, Ghoddoosian et al. utilized temporal blinking patterns to detect early
signs of drowsiness, but their algorithm was tested only on a powerful desktop
computer, which is not practical to apply in a moving vehicle setting. In this
paper, we propose an efficient platform to run Ghoddosian's algorithm, detail
the performance tests we ran to determine this platform, and explain our
threshold optimization logic. After considering the Jetson Nano and Beelink
(Mini PC), we concluded that the Mini PC is the most efficient and practical to
run our embedded system in a vehicle. To determine this, we ran communication
speed tests and evaluated total processing times for inference operations.
Based on our experiments, the average total processing time to run the
drowsiness detection model was 94.27 ms for Jetson Nano and 22.73 ms for the
Beelink (Mini PC). Considering the portability and power efficiency of each
device, along with the processing time results, the Beelink (Mini PC) was
determined to be most suitable. Also, we propose a threshold optimization
algorithm, which determines whether the driver is drowsy or alert based on the
trade-off between the sensitivity and specificity of the drowsiness detection
model. Our study will serve as a crucial next step for drowsiness detection
research and its application in vehicles. Through our experiment, we have
determinend a favorable platform that can run drowsiness detection algorithms
in real-time and can be used as a foundation to further advance drowsiness
detection research. In doing so, we have bridged the gap between an existing
embedded system and its actual implementation in vehicles to bring drowsiness
technology a step closer to prevalent real-life implementation.Comment: 26 pages, 13 figures, 4 table
Computing driver tiredness and fatigue in automobile via eye tracking and body movements
The aim of this paper is to classify the driver tiredness and fatigue in automobile via eye tracking and body movements using deep learning based Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) algorithm. Vehicle driver face localization serves as one of the most widely used real-world applications in fields like toll control, traffic accident scene analysis, and suspected vehicle tracking. The research proposed a CNN classifier for simultaneously localizing the region of human face and eye positioning. The classifier, rather than bounding rectangles, gives bounding quadrilaterals, which gives a more precise indication for vehicle driver face localization. The adjusted regions are preprocessed to remove noise and passed to the CNN classifier for real time processing. The preprocessing of the face features extracts connected components, filters them by size, and groups them into face expressions. The employed CNN is the well-known technology for human face recognition. One we aim to extract the facial landmarks from the frames, we will then leverage classification models and deep learning based convolutional neural networks that predict the state of the driver as 'Alert' or 'Drowsy' for each of the frames extracted. The CNN model could predict the output state labels (Alert/Drowsy) for each frame, but we wanted to take care of sequential image frames as that is extremely important while predicting the state of an individual. The process completes, if all regions have a sufficiently high score or a fixed number of retries are exhausted. The output consists of the detected human face type, the list of regions including the extracted mouth and eyes with recognition reliability through CNN with an accuracy of 98.57% with 100 epochs of training and testing
Drowsy Eyes and Face Mask Detection for Car Drivers using the Embedded System
Efforts to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus have underscored the critical importance of mask-wearing as a preventive measure. Concurrently, road traffic accidents, often resulting from human error, have emerged as a significant contributor to global mortality rates. This study endeavors to address these pressing issues by employing advanced Deep Learning techniques to detect mask usage and identify drowsy eyes, thus contributing to the prevention of COVID-19 and accidents due to driver fatigue. To achieve this objective, an embedded system was developed, utilizing the integration of hardware and software components. The system effectively utilizes MobileNetV2 for face mask detection and employs HOG and SVM algorithms for drowsy eye detection. By seamlessly integrating these detection systems into a single embedded device, the simultaneous detection of both mask usage and drowsy eyes is made possible. The results demonstrates a commendable accuracy rate of 80% for face mask detection and 75% for drowsy eye detection. Furthermore, the mask detection component exhibits a remarkable training accuracy of 99%, while the drowsy eye detection component demonstrates an 80% training accuracy, affirming the system's efficacy in precisely identifying masks and drowsy eyes. The proposed embedded system offers potential applications in enhancing road safety. Its capability to effectively detect drowsy eyes and mask usage in car drivers contributes significantly to preventing accidents due to driver fatigue. Additionally, it plays a vital role in mitigating COVID-19 transmission by promoting widespread mask-wearing among individuals. This study exemplifies the potential of integrating Deep Learning methodologies with embedded systems, thus paving the way for future research and development in the realm of driver safety and virus prevention
