    An Explanatory Case Study on Passenger Service Systems Adoption: A Taiwanese Air Carrier

    This study explains the adoption of Passenger Service Systems (PSS) in airlines through the lens of Inter-organizational Systems adoption and home-region orientation. It examined 20 causal factors influencing PSS adoption and tested an original research model in the technology–organization–environment context, by applying transactional cost theory and neo-institutional theory. Prior to a cross-case study across multiple airlines, the explanatory single-case research analyzed interview data from four informants with a Taiwanese carrier and multiple industry reports; the key findings highlight: (i) interoperable functionality and industry standards as external technological drivers strongly influenced full conversion to the PSS platform; (ii) within the organizational context, commitment to global network, organizational transformation and top management support were identified as salient internal factors in decision-making and resource allocation, while normative pressures from an alliance body exerted a stronger influence over the airline than any other isomorphic forces; and (iii) in the context of environment, full conversion was also facilitated by PSS vendors and powered by the need for mutual worldwide learning to effectively operate foreign markets from home region. This in-depth case study provides insights that PSS in a common-use environment can bring business value to PSS user airlines in accessing a broader global market, offering greater competitive services and expanding distribution channels.     DRIVERS AND RATIONALES IN RFID ADOPTION AND POST ADOPTION INTEGRATION: AN INTEGRATIVE PERSPECTIVE ON IOS ADOPTION

    This study addresses a gap in IOS (interorganizational system) adoption literature by proposing an integrative model of RFID (radio frequency identification) adoption and early integration, that combines multiple theoretical perspectives suggesting different rationales for adoption. The study suggests possible roles for technological, interorganizational pressure, organizational readiness and external environmental factors in the adoption of RFID and proposes the perceived radicalness of technology as a moderator of relationships in the model. Using multiple lenses of strategic choice theories (diffusion of innovation, organizational innovativeness) and institutional theory as the basis and reflecting data from semi- tructured interviews and news reports, the study develops an integrative conceptual RFID adoption model and presents testable hypotheses at the construct and rationale levels. The model incorporates different rationales for adoption and integration of interorganizational systems(IOS) namely the strategic choice perspective where adoption is voluntary with a view to improve organizational efficiency and performance and the institutional perspective where adoption is more a result of conforming to pressures from organizations within an organization’s field of operation. Two technological factors (perceived benefit and perceived costs), three organizational readiness factors (top management support, financial readiness, IS infrastructure and capabilities) and three external environmental factors (perceived standards convergence, perceived consumer privacy and perceived stakeholder privacy) have been suggested as adoption and integration drivers from a strategic choice perspective while the three Inter-organizational pressure factors (coercive, mimetic and normative pressures) have been proposed as predictors of adoption intent and expected integration from the institutional perspective. The study allows for a comparison of the relative influence of each rationale on the adoption and post adoption integration decisions by a firm. Perceived radicalness of the technology has been operationalized as a continuous construct and suggested as a moderator of relationships between the drivers and adoption/integration of RFID. Analysis of data collected from the interviews and news reports lends support to the model and provides insight into relative importance of the constructs

    Restoring Order in Global Health Governance: Do Metagovernance Norms Affect Interorganizational Convergence? CES Open Forum Series #23, 2014-2015

    This paper theorizes about the convergence of international organizations in global health governance, a field of international cooperation that is commonly portrayed as particularly hit by institutional fragmentation. Unlike existing theories on interorganizationalism that have mainly looked to intra- and extraorganizational factors in order to explain why international organizations cooperate with each other in the first place, the paper is interested in the link between causes and systemic effects of interorganizational convergence. The paper begins by defining interorganizational convergence. It then proceeds to discuss why conventional theories on interorganizational- ism fail to explain the aggregate effects of convergence between IOs in global (health) governance which tend to worsen rather than cushion fragmentation — so-called "hypercollective action" (Severino & Ray 2010). In order to remedy this explanatory blind-spot the paper formulates an alternative sociological institutionalist theory on interorganizational convergence that makes two core theoretical propositions: first that emerging norms of metagovernance are a powerful driver behind interorganizational convergence in global health governance, and secondly that IOs are engaged in a fierce meaning-struggle over these norms which results in hypercollective action. In its empirical part, the paper’s core theoretical propositions are corroborated by analyzing discourses and practices of interorganizational convergence in global health. The empirical analysis allows drawing two far-reaching conclusions. On the one hand, interorganizational harmonization has emerged as a largely undisputed norm in global health which has been translated into ever more institutionalized forms of interorganizational cooperation. On the other, discourses and practices of interorganizational harmonization exhibit conflicts over the ordering principles according to which the policies and actions of international organizations with overlapping mandates and missions should be harmonized. In combination, these two empirical findings explain why interorganizational convergence has so far failed to strengthen the global health architecture

    Interorganisational systems (IOS) are seen to play a significant role in enabling organisations around the world to extend their supply chain and to engage in global trading efficiently and effectively regardless of their geographical locations. Existing studies have considered a small unit of analysis in applying the process approach to investigate IOS adoption in developing countries. Therefore, this study explores IOS adoption in Bahrain as an example of a developing country. A multiple case study was conducted with six companies in the grocery industry of Bahrain to investigate IOS adoption. This study enriches the existing literature on IOS adoption in developing countries particularly in the Arabian Gulf region, which is still limited and helps organizations in the related region to be aware of the issues involved in IOS adoption

    Predicting intention to adopt B2B electronic commerce in Jordan: The moderating role of trust and dependency

    Business to Business Electronic Commerce (B2B EC) has great potentials to extend firms’ competency and efficiency. As such, Jordan has an objective to increase the diffusion of this technology. Despite extensive government efforts, the adoption of B2B EC is still limited. Consequently, there have been extensive efforts to better understand the phenomena. Yet, documented findings regarding the determinants of the adoption are not altogether consistent. To provide more insight, this study developed a research model utilizing the Technological, Organizational, and Environmental (TOE) framework to identify the determinants of the firms’ propensity to adopt B2B EC. Since B2B EC is an inter-organizational phenomenon supporting transactions of partnerships, this study emphasizes the context of partnership characteristics. Grounded on inter-organizational theories, this study hypothesized that partnership characteristics, namely trust and dependency, moderate the role of TOE motivating factors. Moreover, given that B2B EC is used on both sides of the buyer/seller relationship, this study examined the differences and similarities in the perception of the marketing and purchasing departments regarding the determinants of the B2B EC adoption. A total of 798 questionnaires were self administrated to marketing and purchasing managers in 462 firms that have large registered capital in Jordan. In total, 114 marketing and 125 purchasing managers participated in this study. Marketing and purchasing responses were analyzed separately using the Partial Least Squares approach. The result revealed that the marketing and purchasing departments do have different views regarding the determinants of the adoption, specifically in terms of the role of Relative Advantage and Competition Pressure. Moreover, the results showed that the moderating role of trust was less pronounced. Meanwhile, the moderating role of dependency was partially supported particularly in the purchasing perspective. These findings have demonstrated how dependence asymmetries between trading partners may change the adoption motivations. They further explain the importance of considering the views of the business partner for the adoption to be done successfully

    The Impact of IOS Use and Interpersonal Ties on Digital Innovation: Insights from Boundary Spanning and Institutional Theories

    Drawing upon the boundary spanning and institutional theories, this study investigates the influence of interorganizational systems (IOS) use and interpersonal ties between a firm and its suppliers on a firm’s digital innovation and how such effects are moderated by institutional distance between the firm and its suppliers. Based on a pilot test of 123 Chinese firms, our results find that a firm’s use of IOS significantly improves its digital innovation, while interpersonal ties between the firm and its suppliers do not significantly improve the firm’s digital innovation. Further, we find that institutional distance between the firm and its suppliers differentially moderates the influences of IOS use and interpersonal ties on digital innovation. Specifically, institutional distance negatively moderates the impact of IOS use on digital innovation yet positively moderates the impact of interpersonal ties on digital innovation. We further discuss the theoretical contributions and managerial implications of the current study
