    Detection of Driver Drowsiness and Distraction Using Computer Vision and Machine Learning Approaches

    Drowsiness and distracted driving are leading factor in most car crashes and near-crashes. This research study explores and investigates the applications of both conventional computer vision and deep learning approaches for the detection of drowsiness and distraction in drivers. In the first part of this MPhil research study conventional computer vision approaches was studied to develop a robust drowsiness and distraction system based on yawning detection, head pose detection and eye blinking detection. These algorithms were implemented by using existing human crafted features. Experiments were performed for the detection and classification with small image datasets to evaluate and measure the performance of system. It was observed that the use of human crafted features together with a robust classifier such as SVM gives better performance in comparison to previous approaches. Though, the results were satisfactorily, there are many drawbacks and challenges associated with conventional computer vision approaches, such as definition and extraction of human crafted features, thus making these conventional algorithms to be subjective in nature and less adaptive in practice. In contrast, deep learning approaches automates the feature selection process and can be trained to learn the most discriminative features without any input from human. In the second half of this research study, the use of deep learning approaches for the detection of distracted driving was investigated. It was observed that one of the advantages of the applied methodology and technique for distraction detection includes and illustrates the contribution of CNN enhancement to a better pattern recognition accuracy and its ability to learn features from various regions of a human body simultaneously. The comparison of the performance of four convolutional deep net architectures (AlexNet, ResNet, MobileNet and NASNet) was carried out, investigated triplet training and explored the impact of combining a support vector classifier (SVC) with a trained deep net. The images used in our experiments with the deep nets are from the State Farm Distracted Driver Detection dataset hosted on Kaggle, each of which captures the entire body of a driver. The best results were obtained with the NASNet trained using triplet loss and combined with an SVC. It was observed that one of the advantages of deep learning approaches are their ability to learn discriminative features from various regions of a human body simultaneously. The ability has enabled deep learning approaches to reach accuracy at human level.

    HW/SW Co-design and Prototyping Approach for Embedded Smart Camera: ADAS Case Study

    In 1968, Volkswagen integrated an electronic circuit as a new control fuel injection system, called the “Little Black Box”, it is considered as the first embedded system in the automotive industry. Currently, automobile constructors integrate several embedded systems into any of their new model vehicles. Behind these automobile’s electronics systems, a sophisticated Hardware/Software (HW/SW) architecture, which is based on heterogeneous components, and multiple CPUs is built. At present, they are more oriented toward visionbased systems using tiny embedded smart camera. This visionbased system in real time aspects represents one of the most challenging issues, especially in the domain of automobile’s applications. On the design side, one of the optimal solutions adopted by embedded systems designer for system performance, is to associate CPUs and hardware accelerators in the same design, in order to reduce the computational burden on the CPU and to speed-up the data processing. In this paper, we present a hardware platform-based design approach for fast embedded smart Advanced Driver Assistant System (ADAS) design and prototyping, as an alternative for the pure time-consuming simulation technique. Based on a Multi-CPU/FPGA platform, we introduced a new methodology/flow to design the different HW and SW parts of the ADAS system. Then, we shared our experience in designing and prototyping a HW/SW vision based on smart embedded system as an ADAS that helps to increase the safety of car’s drivers. We presented a real HW/SW prototype of the vision ADAS based on a Zynq FPGA. The system detects the fatigue/drowsiness state of the driver by monitoring the eyes closure and generates a real time alert. A new HW Skin Segmentation step to locate the eyes/face is proposed. Our new approach migrates the skin segmentation step from processing system (SW) to programmable logic (HW) taking the advantage of High-Level Synthesis (HLS) tool flow to accelerate the implementation, and the prototyping of the Vision based ADAS on a hardware platform

    A systematic review of physiological signals based driver drowsiness detection systems.

    Driving a vehicle is a complex, multidimensional, and potentially risky activity demanding full mobilization and utilization of physiological and cognitive abilities. Drowsiness, often caused by stress, fatigue, and illness declines cognitive capabilities that affect drivers' capability and cause many accidents. Drowsiness-related road accidents are associated with trauma, physical injuries, and fatalities, and often accompany economic loss. Drowsy-related crashes are most common in young people and night shift workers. Real-time and accurate driver drowsiness detection is necessary to bring down the drowsy driving accident rate. Many researchers endeavored for systems to detect drowsiness using different features related to vehicles, and drivers' behavior, as well as, physiological measures. Keeping in view the rising trend in the use of physiological measures, this study presents a comprehensive and systematic review of the recent techniques to detect driver drowsiness using physiological signals. Different sensors augmented with machine learning are utilized which subsequently yield better results. These techniques are analyzed with respect to several aspects such as data collection sensor, environment consideration like controlled or dynamic, experimental set up like real traffic or driving simulators, etc. Similarly, by investigating the type of sensors involved in experiments, this study discusses the advantages and disadvantages of existing studies and points out the research gaps. Perceptions and conceptions are made to provide future research directions for drowsiness detection techniques based on physiological signals.     A novel Big Data analytics and intelligent technique to predict driver's intent

    Modern age offers a great potential for automatically predicting the driver's intent through the increasing miniaturization of computing technologies, rapid advancements in communication technologies and continuous connectivity of heterogeneous smart objects. Inside the cabin and engine of modern cars, dedicated computer systems need to possess the ability to exploit the wealth of information generated by heterogeneous data sources with different contextual and conceptual representations. Processing and utilizing this diverse and voluminous data, involves many challenges concerning the design of the computational technique used to perform this task. In this paper, we investigate the various data sources available in the car and the surrounding environment, which can be utilized as inputs in order to predict driver's intent and behavior. As part of investigating these potential data sources, we conducted experiments on e-calendars for a large number of employees, and have reviewed a number of available geo referencing systems. Through the results of a statistical analysis and by computing location recognition accuracy results, we explored in detail the potential utilization of calendar location data to detect the driver's intentions. In order to exploit the numerous diverse data inputs available in modern vehicles, we investigate the suitability of different Computational Intelligence (CI) techniques, and propose a novel fuzzy computational modelling methodology. Finally, we outline the impact of applying advanced CI and Big Data analytics techniques in modern vehicles on the driver and society in general, and discuss ethical and legal issues arising from the deployment of intelligent self-learning cars

    Marijuana Intoxication Detection Using Convolutional Neural Network

    Machine learning is a broad study of computer science, widely used for data analysis and algorithms that has the ability to learn and improve by experience through training. Supervised learning, Unsupervised learning, Dimensionality Reduction, Deep Learning, etc are the methods offered by Machine learning. These techniques are applied in fields like medical, automotive finance, and many more. In this thesis, Convolutional neural network (CNN) which is a part of deep learning techniques is applied to identify if a person is under influence of Marijuana or sober, using facial feature changes like redness in eyes, watery eyes, and drowsiness caused after smoking Marijuana. CNN is a state-of-the-art method in tasks like image classification and pattern recognition. CNN’s ability to learn from training the model using image dataset is a suitable method to be used in the problem of identifying a person’s sobriety based on facial features. The proposed methodology is divided into three components. Which are dataset creation, face detection to extract input image from real-time video, and finally, tuning and training CNN model for making a prediction. The purpose of this thesis is to develop a CNN model that may be helpful if implemented in vehicles in the future to reduce impaired driving incidents. Impaired driving is a major criminal cause of vehicle accidents in Canada. Impaired driving is a serious problem that puts the lives of pedestrians on the road and drivers involved in impaired driving themselves in danger. This thesis presents how Machine Learning can be applied to predict driver’s sobriety that may be helpful in reducing impaired driving incidents in the future by implementing in vehicles

    Big Data has significant impact in developing functional smart cities and supporting modern societies. In this paper, we investigate the importance of Big Data in modern life and economy, and discuss challenges arising from Big Data utilization. Different computational intelligence techniques have been considered as tools for Big Data analytics. We also explore the powerful combination of Big Data and Computational Intelligence (CI) and identify a number of areas, where novel applications in real world smart city problems can be developed by utilizing these powerful tools and techniques. We present a case study for intelligent transportation in the context of a smart city, and a novel data modelling methodology based on a biologically inspired universal generative modelling approach called Hierarchical Spatial-Temporal State Machine (HSTSM). We further discuss various implications of policy, protection, valuation and commercialization related to Big Data, its applications and deployment

    Driver Distraction Identification with an Ensemble of Convolutional Neural Networks

    The World Health Organization (WHO) reported 1.25 million deaths yearly due to road traffic accidents worldwide and the number has been continuously increasing over the last few years. Nearly fifth of these accidents are caused by distracted drivers. Existing work of distracted driver detection is concerned with a small set of distractions (mostly, cell phone usage). Unreliable ad-hoc methods are often used.In this paper, we present the first publicly available dataset for driver distraction identification with more distraction postures than existing alternatives. In addition, we propose a reliable deep learning-based solution that achieves a 90% accuracy. The system consists of a genetically-weighted ensemble of convolutional neural networks, we show that a weighted ensemble of classifiers using a genetic algorithm yields in a better classification confidence. We also study the effect of different visual elements in distraction detection by means of face and hand localizations, and skin segmentation. Finally, we present a thinned version of our ensemble that could achieve 84.64% classification accuracy and operate in a real-time environment.Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1706.0949
