    Likelihood Asymptotics in Nonregular Settings: A Review with Emphasis on the Likelihood Ratio

    This paper reviews the most common situations where one or more regularity conditions which underlie classical likelihood-based parametric inference fail. We identify three main classes of problems: boundary problems, indeterminate parameter problems -- which include non-identifiable parameters and singular information matrices -- and change-point problems. The review focuses on the large-sample properties of the likelihood ratio statistic. We emphasize analytical solutions and acknowledge software implementations where available. We furthermore give summary insight about the possible tools to derivate the key results.     Klarnetin staccato tekniğini güçlendirme aşamaları eser çalışmalarıyla uygulanmıştır. Staccato geçişlerini hızlandıracak ritim ve nüans çalışmalarına yer verilmiştir. Çalışmanın en önemli amacı sadece staccato çalışması değil parmak-dilin eş zamanlı uyumunun hassasiyeti üzerinde de durulmasıdır. Staccato çalışmalarını daha verimli hale getirmek için eser çalışmasının içinde etüt çalışmasına da yer verilmiştir. Çalışmaların üzerinde titizlikle durulması staccato çalışmasının ilham verici etkisi ile müzikal kimliğe yeni bir boyut kazandırmıştır. Sekiz özgün eser çalışmasının her aşaması anlatılmıştır. Her aşamanın bir sonraki performans ve tekniği güçlendirmesi esas alınmıştır. Bu çalışmada staccato tekniğinin hangi alanlarda kullanıldığı, nasıl sonuçlar elde edildiği bilgisine yer verilmiştir. Notaların parmak ve dil uyumu ile nasıl şekilleneceği ve nasıl bir çalışma disiplini içinde gerçekleşeceği planlanmıştır. Kamış-nota-diyafram-parmak-dil-nüans ve disiplin kavramlarının staccato tekniğinde ayrılmaz bir bütün olduğu saptanmıştır. Araştırmada literatür taraması yapılarak staccato ile ilgili çalışmalar taranmıştır. Tarama sonucunda klarnet tekniğin de kullanılan staccato eser çalışmasının az olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Metot taramasında da etüt çalışmasının daha çok olduğu saptanmıştır. Böylelikle klarnetin staccato tekniğini hızlandırma ve güçlendirme çalışmaları sunulmuştur. Staccato etüt çalışmaları yapılırken, araya eser çalışmasının girmesi beyni rahatlattığı ve istekliliği daha arttırdığı gözlemlenmiştir. Staccato çalışmasını yaparken doğru bir kamış seçimi üzerinde de durulmuştur. Staccato tekniğini doğru çalışmak için doğru bir kamışın dil hızını arttırdığı saptanmıştır. Doğru bir kamış seçimi kamıştan rahat ses çıkmasına bağlıdır. Kamış, dil atma gücünü vermiyorsa daha doğru bir kamış seçiminin yapılması gerekliliği vurgulanmıştır. Staccato çalışmalarında baştan sona bir eseri yorumlamak zor olabilir. Bu açıdan çalışma, verilen müzikal nüanslara uymanın, dil atış performansını rahatlattığını ortaya koymuştur. Gelecek nesillere edinilen bilgi ve birikimlerin aktarılması ve geliştirici olması teşvik edilmiştir. Çıkacak eserlerin nasıl çözüleceği, staccato tekniğinin nasıl üstesinden gelinebileceği anlatılmıştır. Staccato tekniğinin daha kısa sürede çözüme kavuşturulması amaç edinilmiştir. Parmakların yerlerini öğrettiğimiz kadar belleğimize de çalışmaların kaydedilmesi önemlidir. Gösterilen azmin ve sabrın sonucu olarak ortaya çıkan yapıt başarıyı daha da yukarı seviyelere çıkaracaktır

    Statistical-dynamical analyses and modelling of multi-scale ocean variability

    This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of multi-scale oceanic variabilities using various statistical and dynamical tools and explore the data-driven methods for correct statistical emulation of the oceans. We considered the classical, wind-driven, double-gyre ocean circulation model in quasi-geostrophic approximation and obtained its eddy-resolving solutions in terms of potential vorticity anomaly and geostrophic streamfunctions. The reference solutions possess two asymmetric gyres of opposite circulations and a strong meandering eastward jet separating them with rich eddy activities around it, such as the Gulf Stream in the North Atlantic and Kuroshio in the North Pacific. This thesis is divided into two parts. The first part discusses a novel scale-separation method based on the local spatial correlations, called correlation-based decomposition (CBD), and provides a comprehensive analysis of mesoscale eddy forcing. In particular, we analyse the instantaneous and time-lagged interactions between the diagnosed eddy forcing and the evolving large-scale PVA using the novel `product integral' characteristics. The product integral time series uncover robust causality between two drastically different yet interacting flow quantities, termed `eddy backscatter'. We also show data-driven augmentation of non-eddy-resolving ocean models by feeding them the eddy fields to restore the missing eddy-driven features, such as the merging western boundary currents, their eastward extension and low-frequency variabilities of gyres. In the second part, we present a systematic inter-comparison of Linear Regression (LR), stochastic and deep-learning methods to build low-cost reduced-order statistical emulators of the oceans. We obtain the forecasts on seasonal and centennial timescales and assess them for their skill, cost and complexity. We found that the multi-level linear stochastic model performs the best, followed by the ``hybrid stochastically-augmented deep learning models''. The superiority of these methods underscores the importance of incorporating core dynamics, memory effects and model errors for robust emulation of multi-scale dynamical systems, such as the oceans.Open Acces

    Early Neanderthal social and behavioural complexity during the Purfleet Interglacial: handaxes in the latest Lower Palaeolithic.

    Only a handful of ‘flagship’ sites from the Purfleet Interglacial (Marine Isotope Stage 9, c. 350-290,000 years ago) have been properly examined, but the archaeological succession at the proposed type-site at Purfleet suggests a period of complexity and transition, with three techno-cultural groups represented in Britain. The first was a simple toolkit lacking handaxes (the Clactonian), and the last a more sophisticated technology presaging the coming Middle Palaeolithic (simple prepared core or proto-Levallois technology). Sandwiched between were Acheulean groups, whose handaxes comprise the great majority of the extant archaeological record of the period – these are the focus of this study. It has previously been suggested that some features of the Acheulean in the Purfleet Interglacial were chronologically restricted, particularly the co-occurrence of ficrons and cleavers. These distinctive forms may have exceeded pure functionality and were perhaps imbued with a deeper social and cultural meaning. This study supports both the previously suggested preference for narrow, pointed morphologies, and the chronologically restricted pairing of ficrons and cleavers. By drawing on a wide spatial and temporal range of sites these patterns could be identified beyond the handful of ‘flagship’ sites previously studied. Hypertrophic ‘giants’ have now also been identified as a chronologically restricted form. Greater metrical variability was found than had been anticipated, leading to the creation of two new sub-groups (IA and IB) which are tentatively suggested to represent spatial and perhaps temporal patterning. The picture in the far west of Britain remains unclear, but the possibility of different Acheulean groups operating in the Solent area, and a late survival of the Acheulean, are both suggested. Handaxes with backing and macroscopic asymmetry may represent prehensile or ergonomic considerations not commonly found on handaxes from earlier interglacial periods. It is argued that these forms anticipate similar developments in the Late Middle Palaeolithic in an example of convergent evolution

    Transporte sedimentar de misturas arenosas em ambientes costeiros

    Sediment dynamics is a complex subject, playing an important role in coastal areas. The interaction between the wave action and sediment particles is determinant to understand sediment transport. The knowledge of sediment transport in sand mixtures is relevant as the coastal zone usually presents large heterogeneities of sediment particles sizes in the horizontal and vertical directions, which denote the existence of selective transport process. The goal of the present study was to understand selective sand transport mechanisms associated with wave-dominated conditions. To achieve the proposed objective, the work was supported by several approaches to give insights into the processes associated with heterometric sediment transport. The first approach consisted in a review of the literature to understand what is known and the lack of knowledge in the subject. The second approach consisted in performing a set of experiments with fluorescent sand tracers in natural conditions, at the field, and in a controlled environment, at the laboratory. The experiment conducted at Patos beach, Spain, aimed to observe the behavior of the native sand in the natural environment. The one performed at a large wave flume (Großer Wellenkanal, GWK) in Hannover, considered distinct sediment mixtures under two wave conditions. In both, measurements of the total and fractional transport were made. Finally, a quasi-steady and a semi-unsteady model were considered to calculate the net sediment transport of a large data set, for uniform and graded sand, allowing to identify limitations of the models and to propose new methodologies to obtain more adequate results. The experimental results obtained in the field allowed to observe the tracer transport towards the beach, in the wave direction, and to characterize the transport of the different fractions of the tracer in terms of the hydrodynamic processes. The laboratory experiment allowed to verify the occurrence of interaction between the sand fractions, with the finer (coarser) sediment decreasing (increasing) their transport, as the percentage of coarse sand in the bed mixture increases. The validation of the models was conducted and their performance was improved with the introduction of parameters related to surface wave streaming effects and bedforms.A dinâmica sedimentar é um tema complexo, desempenhando um papel importante nas zonas costeiras. A interação entre a ação das ondas e as partículas de sedimento é determinante para compreender o transporte sedimentar. O conhecimento do transporte de sedimentos heterométricos é relevante uma vez que a zona costeira apresenta geralmente grandes heterogeneidades na dimensão das partículas sedimentares nas direções horizontal e vertical, o que denota a existência de processos seletivos de transporte. O presente estudo teve como objetivo compreender os mecanismos de transporte seletivo de areia associados a condições hidrodinâmicas dominadas pelas ondas e considerou diferentes abordagens para evidenciar os processos que intervêm no transporte de sedimentos heterométricos. A primeira abordagem consistiu numa revisão da literatura para compreender o conhecimento atual e as lacunas existentes. A segunda abordagem consistiu na realização de um conjunto de experiências com traçadores de areia fluorescente em condições naturais, no campo, e em ambiente controlado, no laboratório. A experiência realizada na praia de Patos, Espanha, visou observar o comportamento da areia nativa em ambiente natural. A experiência realizada no grande canal de ondas (Großer Wellenkanal, GWK) em Hannover, considerou misturas de sedimentos com granulometrias distintas sob duas condições de ondas. Em ambas as experiências, foram feitas medições do transporte total e fracionado. Finalmente, um modelo quase-estacionário e um modelo semi-não estacionário foram considerados para calcular as taxas de transporte sedimentar de um grande conjunto de dados experimentais, para areia uniforme e heterométrica, permitindo identificar limitações dos modelos e propor novas metodologias para obter resultados mais adequados. Os resultados experimentais obtidos no campo permitiram observar o transporte do traçador em direcção à praia, na direcção das ondas, e caracterizar o transporte das diferentes frações do traçador em termos dos processos hidrodinâmicos. A experiência laboratorial permitiu verificar a ocorrência de processos de interação no transporte das diferentes frações de areia, com a fração mais fina do sedimento (mais grosseira) a diminuir (aumentar) o seu transporte, à medida que a percentagem de areia grosseira na mistura do leito de fundo aumenta.     Unraveling the effect of sex on human genetic architecture

    Sex is arguably the most important differentiating characteristic in most mammalian species, separating populations into different groups, with varying behaviors, morphologies, and physiologies based on their complement of sex chromosomes, amongst other factors. In humans, despite males and females sharing nearly identical genomes, there are differences between the sexes in complex traits and in the risk of a wide array of diseases. Sex provides the genome with a distinct hormonal milieu, differential gene expression, and environmental pressures arising from gender societal roles. This thus poses the possibility of observing gene by sex (GxS) interactions between the sexes that may contribute to some of the phenotypic differences observed. In recent years, there has been growing evidence of GxS, with common genetic variation presenting different effects on males and females. These studies have however been limited in regards to the number of traits studied and/or statistical power. Understanding sex differences in genetic architecture is of great importance as this could lead to improved understanding of potential differences in underlying biological pathways and disease etiology between the sexes and in turn help inform personalised treatments and precision medicine. In this thesis we provide insights into both the scope and mechanism of GxS across the genome of circa 450,000 individuals of European ancestry and 530 complex traits in the UK Biobank. We found small yet widespread differences in genetic architecture across traits through the calculation of sex-specific heritability, genetic correlations, and sex-stratified genome-wide association studies (GWAS). We further investigated whether sex-agnostic (non-stratified) efforts could potentially be missing information of interest, including sex-specific trait-relevant loci and increased phenotype prediction accuracies. Finally, we studied the potential functional role of sex differences in genetic architecture through sex biased expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) and gene-level analyses. Overall, this study marks a broad examination of the genetics of sex differences. Our findings parallel previous reports, suggesting the presence of sexual genetic heterogeneity across complex traits of generally modest magnitude. Furthermore, our results suggest the need to consider sex-stratified analyses in future studies in order to shed light into possible sex-specific molecular mechanisms

    Optical coherence tomography methods using 2-D detector arrays

    Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive, non-contact optical technique that allows cross-section imaging of biological tissues with high spatial resolution, high sensitivity and high dynamic range. Standard OCT uses a focused beam to illuminate a point on the target and detects the signal using a single photodetector. To acquire transverse information, transversal scanning of the illumination point is required. Alternatively, multiple OCT channels can be operated in parallel simultaneously; parallel OCT signals are recorded by a two-dimensional (2D) detector array. This approach is known as Parallel-detection OCT. In this thesis, methods, experiments and results using three parallel OCT techniques, including full -field (time-domain) OCT (FF-OCT), full-field swept-source OCT (FF-SS-OCT) and line-field Fourier-domain OCT (LF-FD-OCT), are presented. Several 2D digital cameras of different formats have been used and evaluated in the experiments of different methods. With the LF-FD-OCT method, photography equipment, such as flashtubes and commercial DSLR cameras have been equipped and tested for OCT imaging. The techniques used in FF-OCT and FF-SS-OCT are employed in a novel wavefront sensing technique, which combines OCT methods with a Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor (SH-WFS). This combination technique is demonstrated capable of measuring depth-resolved wavefront aberrations, which has the potential to extend the applications of SH-WFS in wavefront-guided biomedical imaging techniques

    TESS Observations of Kepler systems with Transit Timing Variations

    We identify targets in the Kepler field that may be characterized by transit timing variations (TTVs) and are detectable by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). Despite the reduced signal-to-noise ratio of TESS transits compared to Kepler, we recover 48 transits from 13 systems in Sectors 14, 15, 26, 40 and 41. We find strong evidence of a nontransiting perturber orbiting Kepler-396 (KOI-2672) and explore two possible cases of a third planet in that system that could explain the measured transit times. We update the ephemerides and mass constraints where possible at KOI-70 (Kepler-20), KOI-82 (Kepler-102), KOI-94 (Kepler-89), KOI-137 (Kepler-18), KOI-244 (Kepler-25), KOI-245 (Kepler-37), KOI-282 (Kepler-130), KOI-377 (Kepler-9), KOI-620 (Kepler-51), KOI-806 (Kepler-30), KOI-1353 (Kepler-289) and KOI-1783 (Kepler-1662).Comment: 26 pages, 9 figure
