    Visibility Representations of Boxes in 2.5 Dimensions

    We initiate the study of 2.5D box visibility representations (2.5D-BR) where vertices are mapped to 3D boxes having the bottom face in the plane z=0z=0 and edges are unobstructed lines of sight parallel to the xx- or yy-axis. We prove that: (i)(i) Every complete bipartite graph admits a 2.5D-BR; (ii)(ii) The complete graph KnK_n admits a 2.5D-BR if and only if n≤19n \leq 19; (iii)(iii) Every graph with pathwidth at most 77 admits a 2.5D-BR, which can be computed in linear time. We then turn our attention to 2.5D grid box representations (2.5D-GBR) which are 2.5D-BRs such that the bottom face of every box is a unit square at integer coordinates. We show that an nn-vertex graph that admits a 2.5D-GBR has at most 4n−6n4n - 6 \sqrt{n} edges and this bound is tight. Finally, we prove that deciding whether a given graph GG admits a 2.5D-GBR with a given footprint is NP-complete.     A Parallel Solver for Graph Laplacians

    Problems from graph drawing, spectral clustering, network flow and graph partitioning can all be expressed in terms of graph Laplacian matrices. There are a variety of practical approaches to solving these problems in serial. However, as problem sizes increase and single core speeds stagnate, parallelism is essential to solve such problems quickly. We present an unsmoothed aggregation multigrid method for solving graph Laplacians in a distributed memory setting. We introduce new parallel aggregation and low degree elimination algorithms targeted specifically at irregular degree graphs. These algorithms are expressed in terms of sparse matrix-vector products using generalized sum and product operations. This formulation is amenable to linear algebra using arbitrary distributions and allows us to operate on a 2D sparse matrix distribution, which is necessary for parallel scalability. Our solver outperforms the natural parallel extension of the current state of the art in an algorithmic comparison.     Track Layouts of Graphs

    A \emph{(k,t)(k,t)-track layout} of a graph GG consists of a (proper) vertex tt-colouring of GG, a total order of each vertex colour class, and a (non-proper) edge kk-colouring such that between each pair of colour classes no two monochromatic edges cross. This structure has recently arisen in the study of three-dimensional graph drawings. This paper presents the beginnings of a theory of track layouts. First we determine the maximum number of edges in a (k,t)(k,t)-track layout, and show how to colour the edges given fixed linear orderings of the vertex colour classes. We then describe methods for the manipulation of track layouts. For example, we show how to decrease the number of edge colours in a track layout at the expense of increasing the number of tracks, and vice versa. We then study the relationship between track layouts and other models of graph layout, namely stack and queue layouts, and geometric thickness. One of our principle results is that the queue-number and track-number of a graph are tied, in the sense that one is bounded by a function of the other. As corollaries we prove that acyclic chromatic number is bounded by both queue-number and stack-number. Finally we consider track layouts of planar graphs. While it is an open problem whether planar graphs have bounded track-number, we prove bounds on the track-number of outerplanar graphs, and give the best known lower bound on the track-number of planar graphs.Comment: The paper is submitted for publication.     Boxicity and separation dimension

    A family F\mathcal{F} of permutations of the vertices of a hypergraph HH is called 'pairwise suitable' for HH if, for every pair of disjoint edges in HH, there exists a permutation in F\mathcal{F} in which all the vertices in one edge precede those in the other. The cardinality of a smallest such family of permutations for HH is called the 'separation dimension' of HH and is denoted by π(H)\pi(H). Equivalently, π(H)\pi(H) is the smallest natural number kk so that the vertices of HH can be embedded in Rk\mathbb{R}^k such that any two disjoint edges of HH can be separated by a hyperplane normal to one of the axes. We show that the separation dimension of a hypergraph HH is equal to the 'boxicity' of the line graph of HH. This connection helps us in borrowing results and techniques from the extensive literature on boxicity to study the concept of separation dimension.Comment: This is the full version of a paper by the same name submitted to WG-2014.
