    Uncovering the big players of the web

    In this paper we aim at observing how today the Internet large organizations deliver web content to end users. Using one-week long data sets collected at three vantage points aggregating more than 30,000 Internet customers, we characterize the offered services precisely quantifying and comparing the performance of different players. Results show that today 65% of the web traffic is handled by the top 10 organiza- tions. We observe that, while all of them serve the same type of content, different server architectures have been adopted considering load bal- ancing schemes, servers number and location: some organizations handle thousands of servers with the closest being few milliseconds far away from the end user, while others manage few data centers. Despite this, the performance of bulk transfer rate offered to end users are typically good, but impairment can arise when content is not readily available at the server and has to be retrieved from the CDN back-en

    QuLa: service selection and forwarding table population in service-centric networking using real-life topologies

    The amount of services located in the network has drastically increased over the last decade which is why more and more datacenters are located at the network edge, closer to the users. In the current Internet it is up to the client to select a destination using a resolution service (Domain Name System, Content Delivery Networks ...). In the last few years, research on Information-Centric Networking (ICN) suggests to put this selection responsibility at the network components; routers find the closest copy of a content object using the content name as input. We extend the principle of ICN to services; service routers forward requests to service instances located in datacenters spread across the network edge. To solve this problem, we first present a service selection algorithm based on both server and network metrics. Next, we describe a method to reduce the state required in service routers while minimizing the performance loss caused by this data reduction. Simulation results based on real-life networks show that we are able to find a near-optimal load distribution with only minimal state required in the service routers

    RFID in the Cloud: A Service for High-Speed Data Access in Distributed Value Chains

    Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) is emerging as an important technology for exchanging information about physical objects along distributed value chains. The influential standardization organization EPCglobal has released standards for RFID-based data exchange that follow the data-on-network paradigm. Here, the business-relevant object data is provided by network services, whereas RFID tags are only used to carry a reference number for data retrieval via the Internet. However, as we show in this paper, this paradigm can result in long response times for data access. We present experiments that explore what factors impact the response times and identify obstacles in current architectures. Based on these analyses, we designed a cloud-based service that realizes high-speed data access for data-on-network solutions. We further present simulation experiments analyzing the benefits of our cloud-based concept with regards to fast RFID-data access and reduced infrastructure cost through scale effects

    Toward a new Telco role in future content distribution services

On the other hand, operators like Telcos see their role shrinking to "dumb pipes" providers. This paper introduces a new Telco role in future content distribution services. In particular, it focuses on the "value" that Telco, as a network operator, can bring to CDN providers and Content providers. Value is assessed with respect to both users' trends and content ecosystem evolution. After our review, we reached two conclusions. Many of Telco assets are likely to be of interest for other content players. An open and efficient control infrastructure is the key for reaching an enhanced business position of the Telco

    Towards a traffic map of the Internet Connecting the dots between popular services and users: Connecting the dots between popular services and users

    The impact of Internet phenomena depends on how they impact users, but researchers lack visibility into how to translate Internet events into their impact. Distressingly, the research community seems to have lost hope of obtaining this information without relying on privileged viewpoints. We argue for optimism thanks to new network measurement methods and changes in Internet structure which make it possible to construct an "Internet traffic map". This map would identify the locations of users and major services, the paths between them, and the relative activity levels routed along these paths. We sketch our vision for the map, detail new measurement ideas for map construction, and identify key challenges that the research community should tackle. The realization of an Internet traffic map will be an Internet-scale research effort with Internet-scale impacts that reach far beyond the research community, and so we hope our fellow researchers are excited to join us in addressing this challenge

    A skewness-aware matrix factorization approach for mesh-structured cloud services

State-of-the-art cloud services are increasingly deployed as a distributed service mesh. Service to service communication is frequent in the mesh. Unfortunately, problematic events may occur between any pair of nodes in the mesh, therefore, it is vital to maximize the network visibility. A state-of-the-art approach is to model pairwise RTTs based on a latent factor model represented as a low-rank matrix factorization. A latent factor corresponds to a rank-1 component in the factorization model, and is shared by all node pairs. However, different node pairs usually experience a skewed set of hidden factors, which should be fully considered in the model. In this paper, we propose a skewness-aware matrix factorization method named SMF. We decompose the matrix factorization into basic units of rank-one latent factors, and progressively combine rank-one factors for different node pairs. We present a unifying framework to automatically and adaptively select the rank-one factors for each node pair, which not only preserves the low rankness of the matrix model, but also adapts to skewed network latency distributions. Over real-world RTT data sets, SMF significantly improves the relative error by a factor of 0.2 x to 10 x, converges fast and stably, and compactly captures fine-grained local and global network latency structures.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Re-designing Dynamic Content Delivery in the Light of a Virtualized Infrastructure

    We explore the opportunities and design options enabled by novel SDN and NFV technologies, by re-designing a dynamic Content Delivery Network (CDN) service. Our system, named MOSTO, provides performance levels comparable to that of a regular CDN, but does not require the deployment of a large distributed infrastructure. In the process of designing the system, we identify relevant functions that could be integrated in the future Internet infrastructure. Such functions greatly simplify the design and effectiveness of services such as MOSTO. We demonstrate our system using a mixture of simulation, emulation, testbed experiments and by realizing a proof-of-concept deployment in a planet-wide commercial cloud system.Comment: Extended version of the paper accepted for publication in JSAC special issue on Emerging Technologies in Software-Driven Communication - November 201
