To ensure the success of translocations, different logistics and species-specific ecological factors need to be considered. Since the early 2000’s, there have been calls to reintroduce the endangered cooperative breeding Floreana mockingbird, to Floreana Island (Galápagos Archipelago) where they became locally extinct due to habitat loss and invasive species. The species currently inhabiting two small islets off the coast of Floreana with no recent history of connection between populations. However, our understanding of reintroduction strategies for the mockingbird is based on monogamous breeding species, not on cooperative breeding species. In this thesis, I explored demographic and behavioural aspects of the species that might facilitate the reintroduction to Floreana. Firstly, I described a non-invasive method that will help will the correct sexing identification and monitoring of Floreana mockingbirds. Furthermore, I assessed the probability of survival of the species using capture-mark-recapture (CMR) models and the influence of precipitation on the survival rate, recruitment of individuals, and population growth. Overall, the population seem to be stable with a slight decrease in one of the populations. Additionally, I explored ecological factors such as vocalization and sociality. I investigated the hypothesis of possible differences in vocalisations between individuals from the two remnant populations. I found an acoustic divergence between populations that could be explained by the influence of cultural drift and morphological differentiation as an effect of isolation, lack of gene flow, and cultural exchange. Finally, I investigated the social structure of the Floreana mockingbird and the probability of group disruption during translocations. I found that mockingbirds live in a highly transitive hierarchy and that the dominance networks are explained by the age and social status of the individuals. Moreover, the network simulations showed that inadequate harvesting could increase the probability of group disruption in the new area of translocations. My research will help develop a reintroduction strategy for the species to Floreana Island and it will assist the Galápagos National Park to reach a major conservation milestone for the species

    Metrological characterization of 3D imaging systems: progress report on standards developments

    A significant issue for companies or organizations integrating non-contact three-dimensional (3D) imaging systems into their production pipeline is deciding in which technology to invest. Quality non-contact 3D imaging systems typically involve a significant investment when considering the cost of equipment, training, software, and maintenance contracts over the functional lifetime of a given system or systems notwithstanding the requirements of the global nature of manufacturing activities. Numerous methods have been published to “help” users navigate the many products and specifications claims about “quality”. Moreover, the “best” system for one application may not be ideally suited for another application. The lack of publically-available characterization methods from trusted sources for certain areas of 3D imaging make it difficult for a typical user to select a system based on information written on a specification sheet alone. An internationally-recognized standard is a vehicle that allows better communication between users and manufacturers. It is in this context that we present a progress report on standards developments to date in the diverse, but finite, world of non-contact 3D imaging systems from the nanometre to the 100 m range

    For the 28th consecutive year, a NASA/ASEE Summer Faculty Fellowship Program was conducted at the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC). The program was conducted by the University of Alabama and MSFC during the period June 1, 1992 through August 7, 1992. Operated under the auspices of the American Society for Engineering Education, the MSFC program, was well as those at other centers, was sponsored by the Office of Educational Affairs, NASA Headquarters, Washington, DC. The basic objectives of the programs, which are the 29th year of operation nationally, are (1) to further the professional knowledge of qualified engineering and science faculty members; (2) to stimulate and exchange ideas between participants and NASA; (3) to enrich and refresh the research and teaching activities of the participants' institutions; and (4) to contribute to the research objectives of the NASA centers

    An automobile was seen as a simple accessory of luxury in the early years of the past century. Therefore, it was an expensive asset which none of the common citizen could afford. It was necessary to pass a long period and waiting for Henry Ford to establish the first plants with the series fabrication. This new industrial paradigm makes easy to the common American to acquire an automobile, either for running away or for working purposes. Since that date, the automotive research grown exponentially to the levels observed in the actuality. Now, the automobiles are indispensable goods; saying with other words, the automobile is a first necessity article in a wide number of aspects of living: for workers to allow them to move from their homes into their workplaces, for transportation of students, for allowing the domestic women in their home tasks, for ambulances to carry people with decease to the hospitals, for transportation of materials, and so on, the list don’t ends. The new goal pursued by the automotive industry is to provide electric vehicles at low cost and with high reliability. This commitment is justified by the oil’s peak extraction on 50s of this century and also by the necessity to reduce the emissions of CO2 to the atmosphere, as well as to reduce the needs of this even more valuable natural resource. In order to achieve this task and to improve the regular cars based on oil, the automotive industry is even more concerned on doing applied research on technology and on fundamental research of new materials. The most important idea to retain from the previous introduction is to clarify the minds of the potential readers for the direct and indirect penetration of the vehicles and the vehicular industry in the today’s life. In this sequence of ideas, this book tries not only to fill a gap by presenting fresh subjects related to the vehicular technology and to the automotive engineering but to provide guidelines for future research.     DEVELOPMENT OF A LAGRANGIAN-LAGRANGIAN METHODOLOGY TO PREDICT BROWNOUT DUST CLOUDS

    A Lagrangian-Lagrangian dust cloud simulation methodology has been developed to help better understand the complicated two-phase nature of the rotorcraft brownout problem. Brownout conditions occur when rotorcraft land or take off from ground surfaces covered with loose sediment such as sand and dust, which decreases the pilot's visibility of the ground and poses a serious safety of flight risk. The present work involved the development of a comprehensive, computationally efficient three-dimensional sediment tracking method for dilute, low Reynolds number Stokes-type flows. The flow field generated by a helicopter rotor in ground effect operations over a mobile sediment bed was modeled by using an inviscid, incompressible, Lagrangian free-vortex method, coupled to a viscous semi-empirical approximation for the boundary layer flow near the ground. A new threshold model for the onset of sediment mobility was developed by including the effects of unsteady pressure forces that are induced in vortically dominated rotor flows, which can significantly alter the threshold conditions for particle motion. Other important aspects of particle mobility and uplift in such vortically driven dust flows were also modeled, including bombardment effects when previously suspended particles impact the bed and eject new particles. Bombardment effects were shown to be a particularly significant contributor to the mobilization and eventual suspension of large quantities of smaller-sized dust particles, which tend to remain suspended. A numerically efficient Lagrangian particle tracking methodology was developed where individual particle or clusters of particles were tracked in the flow. To this end, a multi-step, second-order accurate time-marching scheme was developed to solve the numerically stiff equations that govern the dynamics of particle motion. The stability and accuracy of this scheme was examined and matched to the characteristics of free-vortex method. One-way coupling of the flow and the particle motion was assumed. Particle collisions were not considered. To help reduce numerical costs, the methodology was implemented on graphic processing units, which gave over an order of magnitude reduction in simulation time without any loss in accuracy. Validation of the methodology was performed against available measurements, including flow field measurements that have been made with laboratory-scale and full-scale rotors in ground effect operations. The predicted dust clouds were also compared against measurements of developing dust clouds produced by a helicopter during taxi-pass and approach-to-touchdown flight maneuvers. The results showed that the problem of brownout is mostly driven by the local action of the rotor wake vortices and the grouping or bundling of vortex filaments near the sediment bed. The possibilities of mitigating the intensity of brownout conditions by diffusing the blade tip vortices was also explored. While other means of brownout mitigation may be possible, enhancing the diffusion of the tip vortices was shown to drastically reduce the quantity of mobilized particles and the overall severity of the brownout dust cloud

    A Summary of NASA Rotary Wing Research: Circa 20082018

    The general public may not know that the first A in NASA stands for Aeronautics. If they do know, they will very likely be surprised that in addition to airplanes, the A includes research in helicopters, tiltrotors, and other vehicles adorned with rotors. There is, arguably, no subsonic air vehicle more difficult to accurately analyze than a vehicle with lift-producing rotors. No wonder that NASA has conducted rotary wing research since the days of the NACA and has partnered, since 1965, with the U.S. Army in order to overcome some of the most challenging obstacles to understanding the behavior of these vehicles. Since 2006, NASA rotary wing research has been performed under several different project names [Gorton et al., 2015]: Subsonic Rotary Wing (SRW) (20062012), Rotary Wing (RW) (20122014), and Revolutionary Vertical Lift Technology (RVLT) (2014present). In 2009, the SRW Project published a report that assessed the status of NASA rotorcraft research; in particular, the predictive capability of NASA rotorcraft tools was addressed for a number of technical disciplines. A brief history of NASA rotorcraft research through 2009 was also provided [Yamauchi and Young, 2009]. Gorton et al. [2015] describes the system studies during 20092011 that informed the SRW/RW/RVLT project investment prioritization and organization. The authors also provided the status of research in the RW Project in engines, drive systems, aeromechanics, and impact dynamics as related to structural dynamics of vertical lift vehicles. Since 2009, the focus of research has shifted from large civil VTOL transports, to environmentally clean aircraft, to electrified VTOL aircraft for the urban air mobility (UAM) market. The changing focus of rotorcraft research has been a reflection of the evolving strategic direction of the NASA Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate (ARMD). By 2014, the project had been renamed the Revolutionary Vertical Lift Technology Project. In response to the 2014 NASA Strategic Plan, ARMD developed six Strategic Thrusts. Strategic Thrust 3B was defined as the Ultra-Efficient Commercial VehiclesVertical Lift Aircraft. Hochstetler et al. [2017] uses Thrust 3B as an example for developing metrics usable by ARMD to measure the effectiveness of each of the Strategic Thrusts. The authors provide near-, mid-, and long-term outcomes for Thrust 3B with corresponding benefits and capabilities. The importance of VTOL research, especially with the rapidly expanding UAM market, eventually resulted in a new Strategic Thrust (to begin in 2020): Thrust 4Safe, Quiet, and Affordable Vertical Lift Air Vehicles. The underlying rotary wing analysis tools used by NASA are still applicable to traditional rotorcraft and have been expanded in capability to accommodate the growing number of VTOL configurations designed for UAM. The top-level goal of the RVLT Project remains unchanged since 2006: Develop and validate tools, technologies and concepts to overcome key barriers for vertical lift vehicles. In 2019, NASA rotary wing/VTOL research has never been more important for supporting new aircraft and advancements in technology. 2 A decade is a reasonable interval to pause and take stock of progress and accomplishments. In 10 years, digital technology has propelled progress in computational efficiency by orders of magnitude and expanded capabilities in measurement techniques. The purpose of this report is to provide a compilation of the NASA rotary wing research from ~2008 to ~2018. Brief summaries of publications from NASA, NASA-funded, and NASA-supported research are provided in 12 chapters: Acoustics, Aeromechanics, Computational Fluid Dynamics (External Flow), Experimental Methods, Flight Dynamics and Control, Drive Systems, Engines, Crashworthiness, Icing, Structures and Materials, Conceptual Design and System Analysis, and Mars Helicopter. We hope this report serves as a useful reference for future NASA vertical lift researchers
