    Feature Level Fusion of Face and Fingerprint Biometrics

    The aim of this paper is to study the fusion at feature extraction level for face and fingerprint biometrics. The proposed approach is based on the fusion of the two traits by extracting independent feature pointsets from the two modalities, and making the two pointsets compatible for concatenation. Moreover, to handle the problem of curse of dimensionality, the feature pointsets are properly reduced in dimension. Different feature reduction techniques are implemented, prior and after the feature pointsets fusion, and the results are duly recorded. The fused feature pointset for the database and the query face and fingerprint images are matched using techniques based on either the point pattern matching, or the Delaunay triangulation. Comparative experiments are conducted on chimeric and real databases, to assess the actual advantage of the fusion performed at the feature extraction level, in comparison to the matching score level.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures, conferenc

    Structural matching by discrete relaxation

    This paper describes a Bayesian framework for performing relational graph matching by discrete relaxation. Our basic aim is to draw on this framework to provide a comparative evaluation of a number of contrasting approaches to relational matching. Broadly speaking there are two main aspects to this study. Firstly we locus on the issue of how relational inexactness may be quantified. We illustrate that several popular relational distance measures can be recovered as specific limiting cases of the Bayesian consistency measure. The second aspect of our comparison concerns the way in which structural inexactness is controlled. We investigate three different realizations ai the matching process which draw on contrasting control models. The main conclusion of our study is that the active process of graph-editing outperforms the alternatives in terms of its ability to effectively control a large population of contaminating clutter

    This paper describes a new approach to matching geometric structure in 2D point-sets. The novel feature is to unify the tasks of estimating transformation geometry and identifying point-correspondence matches. Unification is realized by constructing a mixture model over the bipartite graph representing the correspondence match and by affecting optimization using the EM algorithm. According to our EM framework, the probabilities of structural correspondence gate contributions to the expected likelihood function used to estimate maximum likelihood transformation parameters. These gating probabilities measure the consistency of the matched neighborhoods in the graphs. The recovery of transformational geometry and hard correspondence matches are interleaved and are realized by applying coupled update operations to the expected log-likelihood function. In this way, the two processes bootstrap one another. This provides a means of rejecting structural outliers. We evaluate the technique on two real-world problems. The first involves the matching of different perspective views of 3.5-inch floppy discs. The second example is furnished by the matching of a digital map against aerial images that are subject to severe barrel distortion due to a line-scan sampling process. We complement these experiments with a sensitivity study based on synthetic data

    Surface Reconstruction from Unorganized Point Cloud Data via Progressive Local Mesh Matching

    This thesis presents an integrated triangle mesh processing framework for surface reconstruction based on Delaunay triangulation. It features an innovative multi-level inheritance priority queuing mechanism for seeking and updating the optimum local manifold mesh at each data point. The proposed algorithms aim at generating a watertight triangle mesh interpolating all the input points data when all the fully matched local manifold meshes (umbrellas) are found. Compared to existing reconstruction algorithms, the proposed algorithms can automatically reconstruct watertight interpolation triangle mesh without additional hole-filling or manifold post-processing. The resulting surface can effectively recover the sharp features in the scanned physical object and capture their correct topology and geometric shapes reliably. The main Umbrella Facet Matching (UFM) algorithm and its two extended algorithms are documented in detail in the thesis. The UFM algorithm accomplishes and implements the core surface reconstruction framework based on a multi-level inheritance priority queuing mechanism according to the progressive matching results of local meshes. The first extended algorithm presents a new normal vector combinatorial estimation method for point cloud data depending on local mesh matching results, which is benefit to sharp features reconstruction. The second extended algorithm addresses the sharp-feature preservation issue in surface reconstruction by the proposed normal vector cone (NVC) filtering. The effectiveness of these algorithms has been demonstrated using both simulated and real-world point cloud data sets. For each algorithm, multiple case studies are performed and analyzed to validate its performance

    Bootstrap Based Surface Reconstruction

    Surface reconstruction is one of the main research areas in computer graphics. The goal is to find the best surface representation of the boundary of a real object. The typical input of a surface reconstruction algorithm is a point cloud, possibly obtained by a laser 3D scanner. The raw data from the scanner is usually noisy and contains outliers. Apart from creating models of high visual quality, assuring that a model is as faithful as possible to the original object is also one of the main aims of surface reconstruction. Most surface reconstruction algorithms proposed in the literature assess the reconstructed models either by visual inspection or, in cases where subjective manual input is not possible, by measuring the training error of the model. However, the training error underestimates systematically the test error and encourages overfitting. In this thesis, we provide a method for quantitative assessment in surface reconstruction. We integrate a model averaging method from statistics called bootstrap and define it into our context. Bootstrapping is a resampling procedure that provides statistical parameter. In surface fitting, we obtained error estimate which detect error caused by noise or bad fitting. We also define bootstrap method in context of normal estimation. We obtain variance and error estimates which we use as a quality measure of normal estimates. As application, we provide smoothing algorithm for point clouds and normal smoothing that can handle feature area. We also developed feature detection algorithm
