Enrollment in charter public schools has grown by 250,000 students in the 2015-16 school year, and more than 400 new charter public schools have opened their doors, according to, A Closer Look at the Charter School Movement: Schools, Students, and Management Organizations, 2015- 16. The report also estimates that the total number of students currently attending charter public schools is nearly 3 million, representing a sixfold increase in charter school enrollment over the past 15 years. While more than 400 new charter schools opened this school year, the report finds that about 270 schools ceased operations. These schools closed for a variety of reasons, including low enrollment, inadequate financial resources and low academic performance. More than 6,800 charter public schools are now open across 42 states and the District of Columbia

The Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Centre

    Get PDF
In 2009, the development of a medical brief, effectively detailing the specifications for a purpose-built oncology hospital and including the medical equipment and human resources required, was commenced. Robust engagement by the relevant stakeholders, many of which hailed from the extant Sir Paul Boffa Hospital, ensured a very relevant proposal. The project (ERDF 196), led by the Foundation for Medical Sciences, was subsequently approved for partial funding through European Regional Development Funds. The new Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Centre, as it came to be named, first opened its doors for service in December 2014 when the Out-patients Department received the first oncology patients. In April 2015, this was extended to include haematology and paediatric oncology patients. Full migration of services, including in-patient care, took place in September 2015. The distribution of services within the new Centre includes five clinical areas for in-patients made up of two oncology wards, one radioisotope unit, one haematology ward and one palliative care ward, with a total of 88 beds, an out-patient unit with 12 clinic rooms, a day area for day-treatment with a total of 21 couches and eight beds, a clinical support services unit and a radiotherapy department.peer-reviewe

Hearts and Minds: The Untold Story of How Philanthropy and the Civil Marriage Collaborative Helped America Embrace Marriage Equality

    Get PDF
In 2004, a group of foundations came together to create a funder collaborative in support of Freedom to Marry's state-by-state strategy to win marriage equality. Over the following 11 years, this unique collaborative and its funding partners invested a total of $153 million to support a wide range of activities across the country to change hearts and minds on a massive scale -- and ultimately to deliver a historic win for equality and love. This case study tells the untold, behind-the-scenes story of this funder collaborative -- how its members worked with movement leaders to develop a strategy for winning, how they persevered in their support despite enormous setbacks, and how they invested in the opinion research, state-by-state grassroots action and litigation that pushed marriage over the finish line from coast to coast. As the Civil Marriage Collaborative closes its doors in 2015, the case study and video also draw lessons from this historic victory for foundations supporting other social justice causes

Utah State University Residence Life Behind Closed Doors New RA 2015

As I was applying to become a Resident Assistant a few years ago and was attending the Spring semester RA training class, I learned about about Behind Closed Doors (BCD’s). It was about half-way through the semester and I was too caught up with other things to truly notice. At this point, we’d had hours of lectures, activities, and meetings to learn about the position and prepare us to become the best RAs we could be. Talk of BCDs went in through one ear and out the other without a second though. At the end of the semester, I was selected by a Prostaff, assigned to my building, and I went off to spend 3 months away for the summer. When I returned to campus, I couldn’t remember much of anything from the class. We were then quickly thrown in to 40+ hours of intensive training, team bonding, and community development. Suddenly I realized that BCDs were just around the corner. But what were BCDs anyway? I was so sleep deprived and emotionally drained that I couldn’t even bother finding out. This turned out to be a big mistake. Of course, BCDs are conveniently scheduled at the end of long week. As a first year staff member, I was paired up with a fellow newbie and given limited instructions. All I knew was that I was supposed to go on a set of rounds in a building across campus I had never been to. I looked down at the paper instructions and noted the USU campus police number written in bolded text. I began to wonder, what kind of situations I may come across? Was I equipped to handle all of this? My partner and I began walking around looking for any sign of trouble. We came across some evident bulletin board vandalism, a pretty manageable situation. Then, we heard the sounds of loud music and chatter from inside an apartment. Was this part of the scenarios? I wasn’t sure. I timidly knocked on the door and was suddenly caught in a situation I was not prepared for. Bottles of alcohol and red solo cups covered the living room. I stumbled over my words as I tried to gain control of the situation. The acting RAs watched my every move. There was an overly-intoxicated resident on the ground, her slurred speech and delayed response told me that this was a bad situation. In that moment, I freezed. I had no idea what to do or what to say. It seemed like all the hours of training had not prepared me for this. I was able to gather my thoughts and proceed with the situation. Finally, a senior RA interrupted the scenario and began the debrief. Thankfully, I had done a decent job. We discussed the scenario and what it might look like in real life. My partner and I went through several more scenarios all just as intense as the last. At the end of the day, as we were returning to our area, I remember thinking about my experience and wondering what types of real life crisis situations I would have to encounter in the coming year. I was excited and anxious to meet my residents and respond to their needs. After BCDs, I felt that I was ready to take on my job and my community. I definitely would say that BCDs are incredibly helpful in assessing how you respond to high-stress situations. They also force you to stay focused and apply all of the knowledge that you took in during training. I think I will always remember the way that I felt that year as I went through BCDs for the first time

FIRE RESISTANCE GLAZED CONSTRUCTIONS CLASSIFICATION, Changes in the field of application

    Get PDF
The most common fire resistance glazed constructions are arguably doors and non – loadbearing walls (partitions, curtain walls, external walls). In 2014 we welcomed revisions of fire resistance testing standards for doors (EN 1634-1) and curtain walls (EN-1364-3), while revision of EN 1364-1 standard for non – loadbearing walls is planned to be implemented by the end of the year 2015. Taking into account the existence of several EXAP’s for all these kind of constructions, selection of test specimen(s) with best possible configuration is getting more significant nowadays. But equally important question appears - how to treat previously performed fire resistance tests? This paper discusses some interpretation concerns regarding fire resistance classifications of aluminium glazed, non – loadbearing constructions in light of rapidly changing regulations. The paper also points out same examples of testing evidence with regard to outlined concerns

How to promote and enhance communication between a big retailer's after-sales department and its suppliers

    Get PDF
W is the biggest electronic goods retailer in Portugal accounting with almost fifty percent of market share in its area. During the last years, many small W suppliers had to close their doors, and many others are in huge troubles. Among the reason for this situation, the huge bargaining power of W in the relationship seems crucial. The focus of the directed research will be in the after sales department where I did an internship from September 2014 to January 2015

First paragraph: Ed Miliband has kicked off the 2015 election campaign with a new strategy. He’ll be shunning glossy advertising to meet people at their doors. But it’s already clear that he will have to fight to be heard at all – his big speech was disrupted from start to finish by counter-attacks from the Conservatives.
