The image of neighbours: Latvian and Lithuanian literature in Estonia

The translated text has a specific value in the new culture: it can be a translation of a literary text, and it can be a translation of culture, i.e. a synchronic text of a cultural system. There are two principal concepts which are used in the present article: 'translation' and 'reception'. Reception begins with the selection of the author, literary or historical epoch, literary style, or ideology. So, every translation and reception begins with reading, and every reading creates meanings. At the same time, reception is also translation: it is a moment when two distinct cultures mix, and this situation needs understanding of the other. The translated texts create the image of the translated culture and/or nation. The article examines texts from Latvian and Lithuanian literatures from the second half of the 18th century to the early 20th century which have been translated into Estonian: what kind of texts are translated in different periods and by different translators (the selection of the authors and the texts); what the purpose of the translations is; how these translations translate Latvian or Lithuanian culture into Estonian; and how Estonians understand and accept these translated texts. And, finally, how these translated texts create the image of the translated culture and/or nation

Research: Practitioner | Curator | Educator is a co-authored book that identifies where we’re at and where we might be going vis-à-vis the idea of research in the art school, higher education, museums and galleries, and the creative and cultural industries more generally. By way of this book, the authors want to ask why and how specific modes of practice (artistic practice, curating, and practices of pedagogy) operate, and what particular kinds of knowledges artistic research, the curatorial, and the educator generate and disseminate. Concerned for ‘practice’ in our knowledge-based polis, where knowledge – which includes practice as knowledge – is institutionalized and instrumentalized, at the same time we’re interested in the potentialities of how ‘[practice] might be comprehended and described as a specific mode of generating and disseminating knowledge’, and ‘the particular kind of knowledge that can be produced within the artistic realm by… practitioners… who operate in its various places and spaces’, as contributor Tom Holert puts it so eloquently. Throughout Research: Practitioner | Curator | Educator we foreground, celebrate, and question the idea of research, and especially as it relates to the figure of the practitioner, curator, and educator as researcher (as well as to practice, curating, and educating themselves as research and as praxis). As such, the book is hopefully useful for PhD students in art schools internationally, and those working across the Arts and Humanities in institutions of higher education, as well as additional publics engaged critically with the arts and culture. Contributors: Dr Žygimantas Augustinas (artist and Associate Professor, Vilnius Academy of Arts); Professor Tom Corby (artist, and Associate Dean [Research], Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, University of the Arts, London); Dr Tom Holert (artist, critic, and co-founder of the Harun Farocki Institut, Berlin); Dr Lolita Jablonskienė (Senior Curator, National Gallery of Art, Lithuania); Dr Vytautas Michelkevičius (curator, and Associate Professor, Vilnius Academy of Arts); Dr Ieva Pleikienė (Pro-Rector of Studies, Vilnius Academy of Arts); Dr Emily Pringle (Head of Research, Tate); and Dr Marquard Smith (Professor of Artistic Research, Vilnius Academy of Arts, and Programme Leader, MA Museums & Galleries in Education, UCL, London). This book is the third in a Series of collaborations between Vilnius Academy of Arts, Lithuania, and the National Gallery of Art, Lithuania. The titles of the four books in the Series are (1) Research: Practitioner | Curator | Educator (2) Decolonising: the Museum, the Curriculum, and the Mind (3) Do The Right Thing, and (4) What If? Languages, literatures and nationalities in Lithunia (and in the East Baltic region). This article’s focus is on Lithuania and its literature, but many considerations contained in it are also valid for the whole East Baltic cultural region.A preliminary distinction is made inside Lithuanian literature between Ortsgebundenheit and Sprachgebundenheit, in order to show and discuss the strong multilingualism which has characterized the Baltic region already in an early period. A short excursus follows, pointing out the possible importance the “national literary model” could have had in different epochs.Similarities with the situation in Latvia and Estonia, but also with other central European countries, are stressed concerning the delay in building sovereign states; a parallel is drawn especially with Catalonia. The importance and the role played by the language in all these cases is underlined and commented on. Other considerations regard the literature in exile and the new literary tendencies that have emerged after the identity protest movement at the end of the 1980s which led to the declaration(s) of independence. Finally, general thoughts are expressed concerning the concept of “national literature” in the case of countries whose history has been characterized by an intermittence of sovereignty (the case of the Baltic countries), and for other longer-established European countries. The supporters of Weltliteratur normally completely neglect these aspects. In the author’s mind, however, they also should be attentively considered

The article deals with the reception of Donelaitis in the German literature written in the second half of 20th century. There is the focus on two authors of this time: Johannes Bobrowski and Hans-Jürgen Zierke. The novel “Lithuanian Claviers” reflects Donelaitis’ time and parallel the Nazis’ time recognising the same situation: on the one hand, hostility between different national groups, on the other hand, trying to create the atmosphere of confidence. The writer suggests that it is possible only to creative people, artists in words and music. Such person was Kristijonas Donelaitis whose life shows for nowadays people how to behave in critical situations. Bobrowski tries to revive the memory of Donelaitis who was able to defend his community and behave in his difficult time as real Christian. Zierke demonstrates other way of developing the Donelaitis’ theme. The writer describes relationship between the priest and his parishioners. There is also an emphasis on relationship with his friend, who is a priest, and wife Ana Regina. The strategy of narration is based on reconstructing the spirit of time and portraying Donelaitis. This writer went into details of Donelaitis’ life, his writings mode reminds about the historical fiction. Thus both authors reflect Donelaitis’ theme but in very different ways.

The object of research is a personal library of Kristijonas Donelaitis. Its investigation has not produced any results so far. This depends on the low relevance of the problem and scarce source data available. This article suggests that it is necessary to broaden and increase the sets of historical data needed for the analysis of the problem and their variety. It is also important to use new methods and critical approach to the evaluation of the sources and historiographic literature used by the creators of Donelaitis’ studies such as Martin Ludwig Rhesa, Ludwig Loui Passarge, Franz Oskar Tetzner, Aleksandr Horn, Carl Wilhelm Hugo Freyberg). Taking into account the present state of historiography, the aim of the research is formulated as follows: to assertain, to deny, or to leave open the possibility of the existence of the personal library of Donelaitis for further investigation until its reality or at least the fact of probability to be answered unambiguously. The grounds for this research were found in the ambition of the Prussian royal authorities of the 18th century to impose more stringent control on the knowledge, skills and personal life of Protestant priests. Back then, rather fruitful means were used to accomplish this goal. The priests had to react to the new developments in order to improve their official and social standing. This led to the acquisition of a handy library for the development of skills and education. When investigating the library of Donelaitis the main aims should be as follows: 1) to identify personal and official information and creative needs of its owner, 2) to establish the means and sources of library acquisition, 3) to identify its composition and purpose, 4) to trace its fate after the death of the owner. The method applied is based on theoretical proofs and the speculative analysis of historiographical statements and secondary sources. At present, the conducted investigation allows us to provide only theoretical assumptions. According to the results, no convincing proof of the existence of Donelaitis’ personal library can be produced. The possibility of the denial of its existence still exists. Therefore, we can formulate the following dualistic conclusion: 1) according to the conditions of the time and his position, Donelaitis must have had a personal library, 2) so far, there is no data about the fact of the existence of this library. Tyrimo atspirties pozicija remiasi XVIII a. pradžios PrÅ«sijos karaliÅ¡kosios valdžios siekiu griežčiau kontroliuoti protestantų kunigų žinias, gebėjimus ir asmeninį gyvenimą. Å i priemonė buvo veiksminga.

Tam klausimui skiriamas Å¡is straipsnis.
