Computer-based decision support for railway traffic scheduling and dispatching: A review of models and algorithms
This paper provides an overview of the research in railway scheduling and dispatching. A distinction is made between tactical scheduling, operational scheduling and re-scheduling. Tactical scheduling refers to master scheduling, whereas operational scheduling concerns scheduling at a later stage. Re-scheduling focuses on the re-planning of an existing timetable when deviations from it have occurred. 48 approaches published between 1973 and 2005 have been reviewed according to a framework that classifies them with respect to problem type, solution mechanism, and type of evaluation. 26 of the approaches support the representation of a railway network rather than a railway line, but the majority has been experimentally evaluated for traffic on a line. 94 % of the approaches have been subject to some kind of experimental evaluation, while approximately 4 % have been implemented. The Maraca: a tool for minimizing resource conflicts in a non-periodic railway timetable
While mathematical optimization and operations research receive growing attention in the railway sector, computerized timetabling tools that actually make significant use of optimization remain relatively rare. SICS has developed a prototype tool for non-periodic timetabling that minimizes resource conflicts, enabling the user to focus on the strategic decisions. The prototype is called the Maraca and has been used and evaluated during the railway timetabling construction phase at the Swedish Transport Administration between April and September 2010

Numerical simulation of long and slender cylinders vibrating in axial flow applied to the Myrrha reactor
Flow induced vibrations are an important concern
in the design of nuclear reactors. One of the possible designs of the 4th generation nuclear reactors is a lead-cooled fast reactor of which MYYRHA is a prototype. The combination of high liquid density, flow velocity, low pitch-to-diameter ratio and the absence of grid spacers makes this design prone to flow induced vibrations. Although most vibrations are induced by cross flow, axial flow around this slender structure could also induce vibrations. In order to gain insight in the possible vibrations (either induced by cross flow, axial flow or an external excitation) this study examines the change of eigenmodes and frequencies of a bare rod due to the lead-bismuth flow. To do so partitioned simulations of the fluid structure interaction are performed in which the structure is initially perturbed according to an in-air eigenmode
A Hierarchy of Scheduler Classes for Stochastic Automata
Stochastic automata are a formal compositional model for concurrent
stochastic timed systems, with general distributions and non-deterministic
choices. Measures of interest are defined over schedulers that resolve the
nondeterminism. In this paper we investigate the power of various theoretically
and practically motivated classes of schedulers, considering the classic
complete-information view and a restriction to non-prophetic schedulers. We
prove a hierarchy of scheduler classes w.r.t. unbounded probabilistic
reachability. We find that, unlike Markovian formalisms, stochastic automata
distinguish most classes even in this basic setting. Verification and strategy
synthesis methods thus face a tradeoff between powerful and efficient classes.
Using lightweight scheduler sampling, we explore this tradeoff and demonstrate
the concept of a useful approximative verification technique for stochastic
automata
Separation Framework: An Enabler for Cooperative and D2D Communication for Future 5G Networks
Soaring capacity and coverage demands dictate that future cellular networks
need to soon migrate towards ultra-dense networks. However, network
densification comes with a host of challenges that include compromised energy
efficiency, complex interference management, cumbersome mobility management,
burdensome signaling overheads and higher backhaul costs. Interestingly, most
of the problems, that beleaguer network densification, stem from legacy
networks' one common feature i.e., tight coupling between the control and data
planes regardless of their degree of heterogeneity and cell density.
Consequently, in wake of 5G, control and data planes separation architecture
(SARC) has recently been conceived as a promising paradigm that has potential
to address most of aforementioned challenges. In this article, we review
various proposals that have been presented in literature so far to enable SARC.
More specifically, we analyze how and to what degree various SARC proposals
address the four main challenges in network densification namely: energy
efficiency, system level capacity maximization, interference management and
mobility management. We then focus on two salient features of future cellular
networks that have not yet been adapted in legacy networks at wide scale and
thus remain a hallmark of 5G, i.e., coordinated multipoint (CoMP), and
device-to-device (D2D) communications. After providing necessary background on
CoMP and D2D, we analyze how SARC can particularly act as a major enabler for
CoMP and D2D in context of 5G. This article thus serves as both a tutorial as
well as an up to date survey on SARC, CoMP and D2D. Most importantly, the
article provides an extensive outlook of challenges and opportunities that lie

Prototyping Formal System Models with Active Objects
We propose active object languages as a development tool for formal system
models of distributed systems. Additionally to a formalization based on a term
rewriting system, we use established Software Engineering concepts, including
software product lines and object orientation that come with extensive tool
support. We illustrate our modeling approach by prototyping a weak memory
model. The resulting executable model is modular and has clear interfaces
between communicating participants through object-oriented modeling.
Relaxations of the basic memory model are expressed as self-contained variants
of a software product line. As a modeling language we use the formal active
object language ABS which comes with an extensive tool set. This permits rapid
formalization of core ideas, early validity checks in terms of formal invariant
proofs, and debugging support by executing test runs. Hence, our approach

Integrating Creativity Workshops into Structured Requirements Processes
Requirements engineering is a creative process in which stakeholders and designers work together to create ideas for new systems that are eventually expressed as requirements. However, many requirements engineering or software development methods do not encourage or support creative thinking, let alone integrate it with existing modeling and analysis processes. This paper describes RESCUE, a scenario-driven requirements engineering process that includes workshops that integrate creativity techniques with different types of use case and system context modelling. It reports a case study in which RESCUE creativity workshops were used to discover stakeholder and system requirements for DMAN, a future air traffic management system for managing departures from major European airports. The workshop was successful in that it provided new and important outputs for subsequent requirements processes.
