    Yet Another Autoconf Proposal (YAAP) for Mobile Ad hoc NETworks

    This memorandum addresses the issues of automatic address and prefix configuration of MANET routers. Specifically, the paper analyzes the differences between "classic IP networks" and MANETs, emphasizing the interface, link, topology, and addressing assumptions present in "classic IP networks". The paper presents a model for how this can be matched to the specific constraints and conditions of a MANET - i.e., how MANETs can be configured to adhere to the Internet addressing architecture. This sets the stage for development of a MANET autoconfiguration protocol, enabling automatic configuration of MANET interfaces and prefix delegation. This autoconfiguration protocol is characterized by (i) adhering strictly to the Internet addressing architecture, (ii) being able to configure both MANET interface addresses and handle prefix delegation, and (iii) being able to configure both stand-alone MANETs, as well as MANETs connected to an infrastructure providing, e.g., globally scoped addresses/prefixes for use within the MANET. The protocol is specified through timed automatons which, by way of model checking, enable verification of certain protocol properties. Furthermore, a performance study of the basic protocol, as well as of various optimization and extensions hereto, is conducted based on network simulations.Cet article aborde les questions liées à la configuration automatique des adresses et préfixes dans les routeurs MANET. Plus spécifiquement, il analyse les différences entre les « réseaux IP classiques » et les réseaux MANET, en mettant l'accent sur l'interface, les liens et la topologie. Il étudie les hypothèses sous-jacentes dans les réseaux IP classiques et présente un modèle satisfaisant ces hypothèses dans le contexte spécifique des contraintes et conditions d'un réseau MANET, permettant par exemple de configurer les réseaux MANET de sortent qu'ils adhèrent à l'architecture d'adressage d'Internet. Les bases sont ainsi posées pour le développement d'un protocole d'auto configuration MANET, permettant la configuration automatique des interfaces MANET et la délégation automatique de préfixes. Ce protocole de configuration automatique se caractérise (i) par son adhérence stricte à l'architecture d'adressage d'Internet, (ii) par sa double capacité de configuration des interfaces MANET et de délégation de préfixes, et enfin (iii) par son aptitude à configurer aussi bien des réseaux MANETS indépendants que des réseaux MANET connectés à une infrastructure fournissant par exemple des adresses et préfixes à portée globale pour leur utilisation dans MANET. Le protocole est défini au travers d'automates temporels, qui grâce à un modèle de contrôle, permettent de vérifier certaines propriétés du protocole.     Integrated Architecture for Configuration and Service Management in MANET Environments

    Esta tesis nos ha permitido trasladar algunos conceptos teóricos de la computación ubicua a escenarios reales, identificando las necesidades específicas de diferentes tipos de aplicaciones. Con el fin de alcanzar este objetivo, proponemos dos prototipos que proporcionan servicios sensibles al contexto en diferentes entornos, tales como conferencias o salas de recuperación en hospitales. Estos prototipos experimentales explotan la tecnología Bluetooth para ofrecer información basada en las preferencias del usuario. En ambos casos, hemos llevado a cabo algunos experimentos con el fin de evaluar el comportamiento de los sistemas y su rendimento. También abordamos en esta tesis el problema de la autoconfiguración de redes MANET basadas en el estándar 802.11 a través de dos soluciones novedosas. La primera es una solución centralizada que se basa en la tecnología Bluetooth, mientras la segunda es una solución distribuida que no necesita recurrir a ninguna tecnología adicional, ya que se basa en el uso del parámetro SSID. Ambos métodos se han diseñado para permitir que usuarios no expertos puedan unirse a una red MANET de forma transparente, proporcionando una configuración automática, rápida, y fiable de los terminales. Los resultados experimentales en implementaciones reales nos han permitido evaluar el rendimiento de las soluciones propuestas y demostrar que las estaciones cercanas se pueden configurar en pocos segundos. Además, hemos comparado ambas soluciones entre sí para poner de manifiesto las diferentes ventajas y desventajas en cuanto a rendimento.     QoS-Based Web Service Discovery in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks Using Swarm Strategies

    Mobile ad hoc networks are noncentralised, multihop, wireless networks that lack a common infrastructure and hence require self-organisation. Their infrastructureless and dynamic nature entails the implementation of a new set of networking technologies in order to provide efficient end-to-end communication according to the principles of the standard TCP/IP suite. Routing, IP address autoconfiguration and Web service discovery are among the most challenging tasks in the ad hoc network domain. Swarm intelligence is a relatively new approach to problem solving that takes inspiration from the social behaviours of insects, such as ants and bees. Self-organization, decentralization, adaptivity, robustness, and scalability make swarm intelligence a successful design paradigm for the above-mentioned problems. In this paper we proposeBeeAdHocServiceDiscovery, a new service discovery algorithm based on the bee metaphor, which also takes into account quality metrics estimates. The protocol has been specifically designed to work in mobile ad hoc network scenarios operating withBeeadhoc, a well-known routing algorithm inspired by nature. We present both the protocol strategy and the formal evaluation of the discovery overhead and route optimality metrics showing thatBeeAdHocServiceDiscoveryguarantees valuable performances even in large scale ad hoc wireless networks.     NETWORK AND DOMAIN AUTOCONFIGURATION: A UNIFIED FRAMEWORK FOR LARGE MOBILE AD HOC NETWORKS

    Configuration management is critical to correct and efficient operation of large networks. In those cases where the users and networks are dynamic and ad hoc, manual configuration quickly becomes too complex. The combination of the sheer number of nodes with the heterogeneity and dynamics makes it almost impossible for the system administrator to ensure good configuration or even ensure correct operation. To achieve the vision of pervasive computing, nodes must automatically discover their environment and self-configure, then must automatically reconfigure to adapt to changes. Protocols such as DHCP, DDNS and mDNS provide some degree of host autoconfiguration, but network administrators must still configure information such as address pools, routing protocols, or OSPF routing areas. Only limited progress has been made to automate the configuration of routers, servers and network topology. This dissertation proposes the autoconfiguration of most host, router and server information, including the automatic generation and maintenance of hierarchy, under the same architectural, algorithmic and protocol framework. The proposed unified framework consists of modules (DRCP, DCDP, YAP, ACA) responsible for the entity autoconfiguration and from a modified and well adjusted general optimization (Simulated Annealing) based algorithm for the domain autoconfiguration. Due to the generality of the optimization algorithm, the generated hierarchy can improve dynamically selected network performance aspects represented by appropriately designed objective functions and constraints. An indicative set related to the physical characteristics of the domains and node mobility is provided. Even though SA has been adjusted for faster convergence, it may still be unable to capture the dynamics of rapidly changing networks. Thus, a faster but suboptimal distributed hierarchy generation mechanism that follows the design philosophy of SA-based mechanism has also been introduced. Inevitably, due to network dynamics, the quality of the hierarchy will degrade. In such scenarios, the frequent reapplication of the expensive optimization based hierarchy generation is prohibitive. Hence, for extending the domain formation framework, distributed maintenance mechanisms have been proposed for reconstructing the feasibility and quality of the hierarchy by enforcing localized decisions.     Internet connection method for mobile ad hoc wireless networks

    In recent years, wireless networks with Internet services have become more and more popular. Technologies which integrate Internet and wireless networks have extended traditional Internet applications into a more flexible and dynamic environment. This research work investigates the technology that supports the connection between a Mobile Ad Hoc Wireless Network (MANET) and the Internet, which enables the current wireless Internet technologies to provide a ubiquitous wireless life style. With detailed analysis of the existing wireless Internet technologies and MANETs regarding their features and applications, the demand and lack of research work for an application to provide Internet connection to MANET is indicated. The primary difficulty for MANET and Internet connection is that the dynamic features of MANET do not suit the traditional connection methods used in infrastructure wireless networks. This thesis introduces new concept of the 'Gateway Awareness' (GAW) to the wireless devices in the MANET. GAW is a new routing protocol designed by the author of this thesis, at the University of Warwick. Based on GAW, an inclusive definition for the connection method, which supports the Internet connection and keeps the independency of routing in MANET, is addressed. Unlike other research work, this method supports the MANET and Internet communication in both directions. Furthermore, it explores possible ways of using the Internet as an extension for wireless communications. The GAW routing method is developed from destination sequenced distance vector (DSDV) routing protocol. However, it defines a layer of wireless nodes (known as GAWNs) with exclusive functions for the Internet connection task. The layer of GAWNs brings a new set of route update and route selection method. Simulations show that the GAW routing method provides quality Internet connection performance in different scenarios compared with other methods. In particular, the connection is completed with minimum effect on the independent MANET while the routing efficiency and accuracy is guaranteed

    IPv6 Neighbor Discovery for Vehicular Networks

    Vehicular Communication Networks (VCN) are critical enabling technologies that contribute to the advancement of Intelligent Transportation Systems. Although initially VCN were thought with a focus on safety, there is a myriad of IP-based applications for information and entertainment systems to be deployed in vehicular scenarios. To support IP-based applications, standard protocol stacks, including IEEE WAVE and the recent 3GPP C-V2X architectures, define the transport of IPv6 and related protocols on top of the specific wireless access technologies. One of the fundamental protocols for the use of IPv6 is Neighbor Discovery (ND), defined in RFC 4861.     Message Complexity Analysis of Mobile Ad Hoc Network (Manet) Address Autoconfiguration Protocols

    This dissertation proposes a novel method to perform a quantitative analysis of message complexity and applies this method in comparing the message complexity among the mobile ad hoc network (MANET) address autoconfiguration protocols. The original publications on the address autoconfiguration protocols had many incomplete parts making them insufficient to use on practical MANETs. Therefore, the first objective of the executed research was to complete the address autoconfiguration protocols by filling in all the missing gaps to make them operational. The missing procedures that were filled in have been developed based on the most logical procedures being faithful to the original protocol publications. In this dissertation, to obtain the upper bound of the message complexity of the protocols, the O-notation of a MANET group of N nodes has been applied. To asymptotically calculate the total number of messages generated by a protocol's step or procedure, an investigation on the nodes broadcasting, unicasting, relaying, and receiving messages is conducted and used in obtaining the upper bound of the message complexity for each protocol.School of Electrical & Computer Engineerin
